Penguins in Australia
The Little Penguins are the smallest penguins in the world. They are only about 30 centimetres tall. You can find them on the southeastern coast (海岸) of Australia, especially on Phillip Island. The Yellow-eyed Penguins look cute and they live on the southeastern coast of Australia and in New Zealand. But now there are only 5,000 of them left in the wild. This is bad news.
Chart Ⅰ
Australia is home to some penguins. However, they are facing many dangers, such as over-fishing and oil spill (石油泄漏). We should try our best to save them.
Making sweaters (毛衣) for penguins is an activity. The Penguin Foundation (基金會) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia start it to save the penguins. The foundation asks people to help make sweaters for the penguins. These sweaters keep them warm and stop them from taking in the oil.
In 2001, there was an oil spill and penguins were in great danger. But this time, people use sweaters to help the penguins. Because of this idea, the sweaters help to save 96 percent of the penguins.
Making sweaters for penguins is useful. But some people worry that the sweaters are bad for the penguins. They think the sweaters may make them too hot. However, the Penguin Foundation tells them that the sweaters are only used for a short time. They will be taken off when the penguins grow back as usual.Know more
As oil spills get fewer, the Penguin Foundation starts to use the rest sweaters to make penguin toys. By selling them in the shop, people can get money to help save penguins and other animals.Chart Ⅱ

Billions of cicadas are coming out from the ground in the US
最吵的夏天!美國遭遇兩百年來最大“蟬災”
Why is it so noisy It’s because of the cicadas (蟬)! Yes, cicadas are taking over trees and bushes in many parts of the US.
As the ground temperature reaches 17.8 C, billions of these 3.8-centimeter-long bugs come out of the ground. They’ll hang around for about 40 days, first getting rid of their shells (脫殼) and then mating (交配). This is when they “sing” loudly. Then, the bugs die off and the young go underground and wait for the next cycle (循環).
This year is extra (格外的) noisy. That’s because two different groups of cicadas have come out. One group comes up every 13 years and the other comes up every 17 years. This special event hasn’t happened since the year 1803!
Animals like birds, squirrels and even pet dogs will for sure get fatter at this time. They will enjoy eating the cicadas as an easy meal.
As for people, some are worried because of the noise. When cicadas sing together, the sound can be as loud as a motorcycle (摩托車).
“I won’t leave my house, see anyone and will order everything for delivery (送貨),” Rosalie Lacorazza, a US local, told CNN.
What’s next
Scientists are interested to see if the two groups of cicadas will breed (繁殖) with each other. This might lead to a new population (種群). The next time the two groups will come out together may be in the year 2245. However, global warming may change this date. It has already made some cicadas come out of the ground four years earlier than usual.Key Course

Rules are everywhere in our lives. At school, we have many rules to follow. For example, we must be on time for class and keep the classroom clean. These rules help us learn better and respect each other. In the classroom, rules are like the walls that keep us safe and focused.
At home, rules are also important. They help us live happily together. For example, we need to wash our hands before eating and keep our rooms tidy. These rules not only help us stay healthy but also teach us to be careful. Family rules make our home a better place to live.
In public places, rules are everywhere. In the library, we need to be quiet so that others can read and study. On the bus, we should offer our seats to the elderly. These rules help us show kindness and respect to others. Public rules make our society more harmonious.
Imagine a world without rules. It would be very confusing. In the classroom, students would talk all the time and no one could learn anything. At home, family members might argue more because there would be no guidelines. In public places, people might push and shout, making everyone feel uncomfortable. Rules are like the traffic lights that keep everything moving well.
Rules are important because they teach us how to behave properly. They help us develop good habits and respect others. With rules, we can live in peace and harmony. Rules are like the invisible hands that guide us and make our lives better.

In our daily lives, rules play 25 important role. They help us live in an organized way. In the classroom, rules are like the walls that keep us 26 and focused. At home, rules teach us to be 27 . In public places, rules help us show 28 and respect to others. Rules are like the traffic lights that keep everything moving 29 .
Rules are everywhere in our lives. They play a crucial role in keeping things in order. In school, we have rules to ensure a good learning environment. For example, we must arrive at school on time. If we are late, we may miss important lessons. In the classroom, we should keep quiet and listen to the teacher carefully. This helps us learn better and shows respect for others.
At home, there are also rules. We should help with housework, like cleaning our rooms or doing the dishes. These rules teach us responsibility. We are also expected to respect our parents and elders.
In public places, rules are equally important. In a library, we have to keep quiet so that everyone can read in peace. When we cross the road, we must follow the traffic rules. Stopping at red lights and using the zebra crossing keep us safe.
However, some people may think that rules limit their freedom. But in fact, rules are not meant to restrict us. Instead, they protect us and make our lives more organized. Without rules, there would be chaos everywhere. For example, if there were no traffic rules, the roads would be in a mess, and accidents would happen frequently. So, we should understand the importance of rules and follow them willingly.

“You’re right. And students shouldn’t sleep in class,” says Grace.
“And what should we do when we answer teachers’ questions Can we talk casually (隨意地) ”
“Of course not! It’s noisy in class. We should put up our hands and then answer the questions,” Amy says.
“Yeah. What rules do you know, Jenny ”
“Don’t run in the hallways,” Jenny says.
“No one wants to fall (摔倒) or get hurt. And remember not to fight with our classmates. That’s important.”
“Great!” says Mr White. “If everyone follows our class rules, our class and students can be better.”
“Yes, we can do it,” says the students.

Some teenagers are talking about their family rules.
Rules in my family are mainly about time. For example, I must get home before 10 p.m. when I go out with my friends. I know it is good for me. But sometimes when we are having a good time, my parents call me and I have to leave. It is much too strict. I hope they can change it sometime in the future. My family doesn’t have too many rules. But my parents ask me to help around the house—making my bed, doing the dishes and sweeping the floor. They think it is every family member’s duty to keep the house clean. And I think I can learn to look after myself by doing chores.
Now lots of students use mobile phones. I am one of them. But Mom makes a rule for me—I cannot bring my phone into my bedroom at night because the radiation (輻射) from the mobile phone is bad for my body. I think all of my family, not only I, should follow the rule. My f family has a rule. IfI come first in an exam, my daddy will do 20 push-ups (俯臥撐)! Why do we have such a rule Because my father is a little fat (胖的) and I want him to do more exercise to lose weight (減肥). On the other hand, the rule makes me study hard. I love this rule. It is full of love!

Winter is a season of ice and snow and it’s a good time to play winter sports. In China, winter sports have a long history. Over two thousand years ago, people had to catch animals for food in winter. They skated to move quickly. Hundreds of years ago, people started to have fun skating on the ice. China’s love for winter sports is growing over time. After the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, winter sports became quite popular across the country.
Among the winter sports lovers, about 46 million are under 18. To encourage more teenagers to take part in winter sports, schools have been making a lot of efforts. In the hope that students can do at least one kind of winter sports in the future, primary and middle schools plan to start winter sports classes. Beijing has made a good start. Students in Beijing are asked to have at least one hour to practice the sports every week. With the help of the 16 new indoor and 50 outdoor ice rinks (溜冰場), winter becomes more fun for students in Beijing.
Doing winter sports is fun and helps students build up a strong body. Students don’t mind the cold and seldom get sick in winter after exercising for some time. Starting in 2025, China will have new rules for food labels (標簽). Companies (公司) must tell the real information about what is in their food. For example, if a mooncake says it has “bird’s nest” (燕窩), I t must show how much is really inside.
Many people buy food with labels like “zero additives” (零添加) because they think it is healthier. But sometimes these labels are not real. For example, Some “zero add t ve” soy sauce (醬油) has metal (金屬) that can hurt people. Some “zero sugar” drinks still use not real sugar.
Food companies have two years to follow the new rules. If they lie (撒謊), they may have to pay money or lose their business. Experts say this will help people choose healthier food.
However, Some labels can still make customers confused (疑惑). A soy sauce called “Qianhe 0” makes them think it has no additives, but the “0” is just part of its name.
Customers like the new rules. On the Internet, 28 million customers talked about it, saying it is “a win” against not real ads. But experts says: “zero additives” only means no extra (額外) additives—food can still have natural sugar or fat—So it may cause some health problems.

Hi, Grandma!
Thanks for your email. To answer your question, my new life is great. The school is beautiful and the teachers are kind. My classmates are really fun and we usually eat lunch together in the dining hall. The food is amazing!
Some of the school rules here are different from the ones at home. For example, we do morning exercises before we start the first class. Some of my classmates don’t do sports much at home, so this is a good rule for them. Here classes start at 8:00 every morning. They don’t finish until (直到) 4:00 in the afternoon. The day is long, so we play ball games like football, basketball after school. We all feel quite relaxed.
Another rule is to wear the school uniform. The students all wear the same. The good thing is that I don’t have to think about what to wear every morning. But sometimes I want to see what kind of clothes my classmates like.
At some schools, like ours, students can’t talk in class, but we can ask our classmates for help if we find a subject not easy to learn. Binbin often helps me with maths, and I often help him with his English homework.
Talk to you soon!

In my daily life, I find that rules are here and there. They help me live and study better. And they play an important role (作用) in keeping me healthy too.
Let’s talk about eating first. There are rules for what and when I should eat. Eating healthy food is really important. I eat more vegetables and fruits with every meal. After all, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Hamburgers and ice-cream taste great, but I can’t have them too often. They are junk food. Also, I always have my meals on time. Eating breakfast is very important. It gives me energy in the morning. If I don’t eat breakfast, I’ll feel hungry and can’t focus on my studies.
Exercise also has its rules. I need to exercise regularly. It’s good to exercise three or four times a week. I usually run, swim, use an exercise app or play ball games. When I run, I start slowly (慢慢地) and then go fast. I also warm up before exercising. This helps me not to get hurt (受傷的) . And I never exercise too much because maybe it is bad for my body.
Following these rules about eating and exercising, I stay healthy. I have more energy and can do better in school. In short, rules help me take good care of myself. I always follow them to be healthy and happy.

Rosie and the other students got on a school bus. Their teacher, Ms Green, told them the museum was a quiet place. They should talk to each other quietly and should not run. “And do not touch (觸摸) the paintings,” said Ms Green.
When the class arrived at the museum, Ms Green took them to a big room. The paintings there were special. They were all red, with many orange, green and purple dots (點). These dots made pictures of trees, animals or houses. How great!

It was 10 o’clock now. Time for milking! Uncle Lin milked the cows and I took some notes. The cows came when we called them. It was so cool!
In the afternoon, we cleaned the pigsty (豬圈). Pigs like to sleep in a clean place. I was glad to be of help.
Before dinner, we went to collect eggs. You’ll never believe this: A hen flew up and pecked me!
What an unforgettable (難忘的) day!

During the Jin Dynasty, there was a man named Du Xi. He was hard-working and clever. The king invited him to work for the country.
Du Xi often advised Min Huai, the son of the king, not to do silly things. Min Huai wasn’t thankful to Du Xi. He hated Du Xi, instead. He thought Du Xi often didn’t praise him at all. Then he decided to punish (懲罰) Du Xi.
One day, Min ordered his servants to put some needles (針) into a cushion (坐墊). Then he asked Du Xi to sit on the cushion. Du Xi didn’t know anything about the needles. As a result, he was badly hurt by the needles.
The next day, Min Huai asked Du Xi what happened. Du Xi answered, “I’ve been drunk, and don’t remember anything.” Min Huai added, “How come you also do silly things ” Du Xi didn’t know how to reply. He wanted to leave, but he couldn’t. He had a terrible feeling, just like sitting on the cushion with needles inside.
