Top Power Banks for Charging on the Go
To find you the best power banks for your electrical emergencies, I put 4 top models through their paces.
◆Belkin BoostCharge Pro
If you need a highly capable power bank that can recharge your laptop and smartphone, this model would be a fine choice.
Why we love it: Charging didn’t slow down much when I plugged in two devices at once.
It’s a shame that... the on-screen metrics are slightly less detailed than those on some competing brands.
Capacity: 20,000mAh, 59.99 at Amazon.

What if you could use the plastic waste littering your home country to help solve its housing crisis For architect Oscar Andrés Méndez, that inspiration led to an invention that presents his core values.
His Colombia-based company, Conceptos Plásticos, transforms plastic like bags and snack-food containers into Lego-like blocks. These blocks are 95% plastic and can be used to build houses. Since 2010, they’ve made the process more efficient. A typical two-bedroom house can now be built in five days, capturing six tons of plastic and at a cost from $4,000 to $7, 000 — far cheaper than traditional construction. The structures are also earthquake resistant, fire-proof, and not so easy to tear down: Each building, Méndez says, should stand for more than 200 years.
Conceptos Plásticos initially partnered with private firms to build houses in Colombia. In 2017, Aboubacar Kampo, then a UNICEF representative in C te d’ Ivoire, contacted the company. He explained how plastic waste in sewers caused floods and spread malaria, and highlighted the country’s urgent need for durable schools due to frequent rebuilding during the rainy season. Kampo invited the company to Abidjan, where they were shocked by the sight of women carrying children on their backs while picking plastic from dumps for low pay.
“We have the solution,” Méndez remembers thinking. Not only with their brick-making technology but with the potential to create an economic system that, as Méndez puts it, could “empower the people.” Conceptos Plásticos had the technology.
As part of a three-million-dollar deal with UNICEF, Conceptos Plásticos built a new factory in Abidjan and recruited workers, mainly women, to source the plastic needed. So far, over 4, 000 tons of plastic have been transformed into more than 550 classrooms, all for approximately 60 percent of what traditional construction methods cost. The effort has created a circular economy that removes waste from the environment, improves the educational system by way of well-designed buildings, and creates jobs.
4. What is the primary purpose of Méndez’s invention
A. To solve waste and housing problems. B. To perfect traditional constructions.
C. To create new plastic materials. D. To supply roofs and windows.
5. Which of the following can best describe Conceptos Plásticos’ product
A. Flexible and free. B. Time-consuming but green.
C. Labor-intensive but cheap. D. Economical and sustainable.
6. Why did Conceptos Plásticos build a factory in Abidjan
A. To stop the spread of malaria. B. To improve local sewer systems.
C. To sell brick-making technology. D. To fix local eco and social issues.
7. What does the specific data in the last paragraph imply
A. The impact of the project. B. The scale of plastic waste.
C. The efforts made by local government. D. The challenges Conceptos Plásticos faced.
【答案】4. A 5. D 6. D 7. A

Crows have a sense of geometry like our own, a new study reveals. They can detect the’ odd one out’ in a set of geometric shapes.
“We humans — based on our unique symbolic understanding — take geometry to a whole different level; but the very foundation of it, from a visual point of view, seems to be rooted in evolution,” said animal physiologist Andreas Nieder.
Nieder and his colleagues trained two 11 and 10-year-old crows to detect a single odd shape that didn’t match five identical two-dimensional shapes on a computer screen. The crows hit the screen to indicate the “intruder.”
“Up to this stage of the experiment, the crows had never been tasked with detecting a a foreign shape amid others,” the authors note in their research paper. This ensured the crows would demonstrate preexisting geometric sensibilities, rather than acquired ones.
For the trials, half the time the crows were shown sets of quadrilateral, with each shape set to a random rotation and scale. Crows more easily detect the odd one out among four-sided shapes with regular features, like the even length of sides in a square, or the consistent 90-degree angles of a rectangle. It’s more difficult to tell which is the odd one out in sets of irregular quadrilaterals. For example, five of them have the same angles and side length as each other, but are shown at different rotations. To keep the crows interested and minimize frustration, the other half of the time they were shown familiar shapes like five stars and a moon, used in their training.
“Birds use spatial regularities for navigation in larger environments,” Nieder said. “Their sensory skills and ability to grasp geometric properties in two-dimensional shapes, without any additional training to do so, showcase how core knowledge of geometry is rooted in biological evolution.”
Whether our abilities evolved separately or within our shared life history, we are excited to find yet another reason why crows are the best.
8. What does the underlined “intruder” refer to in Para.3
A. A computer screen. B. The unmatching shape.
C. An untrained crow. D. The two-dimensional shape.
9. Which of the following groups of shapes might crows show the worst performance
A. B. C. D.
10. Why were familiar shapes used in the experiments
A. To test crows’ memory. B. To keep crows engaged.
C. To make the task harder. D. To enhance the training.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Crows Trained to Recognize Shapes B. Crows and the Evolution of Geometry
C. Crows’ Geometric Sense: An Inborn Skill D. Crows’ Navigation: A Learned Capability
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. C

詞句猜測題。根據第一段“Crows have a sense of geometry like our own, a new study reveals. They can detect the’ odd one out’ in a set of geometric shapes.(一項新研究顯示,烏鴉具有與人類相同的幾何感知能力。它們能夠辨別出一組幾何圖形中的“與眾不同者”)”以及劃線詞上文“Nieder and his colleagues trained two 11 and 10-year-old crows to detect a single odd shape that didn’t match five identical two-dimensional shapes on a computer screen.(尼德和他的同事訓練了兩只分別為11歲和10歲的烏鴉,讓它們在電腦屏幕上從五個相同的二維圖形中識別出一個不同的形狀)”可知,烏鴉可以通過點擊屏幕來識別幾何圖形中與其他圖形不匹配的形狀,故劃線詞指的是“不匹配的形狀”。故選B。
【9題詳解】
細節理解題。根據倒數第三段“Crows more easily detect the odd one out among four-sided shapes with regular features, like the even length of sides in a square, or the consistent 90-degree angles of a rectangle. It’s more difficult to tell which is the odd one out in sets of irregular quadrilaterals. For example, five of them have the same angles and side length as each other, but are shown at different rotations.(烏鴉更容易辨別出四邊形中與眾不同的那一個。這類四邊形具有統一的特征,比如正方形邊長的均勻性,或者長方形 90 度角的一致性。而在一組不規則的四邊形中,就很難判斷哪個是與眾不同的那個了。例如,其中有五個四邊形的角和邊長彼此相同,只是它們的旋轉角度不同)”可知,A組最有可能導致烏鴉表現不佳。故選A。
【10題詳解】
細節理解題。根據倒數第三段“To keep the crows interested and minimize frustration, the other half of the time they were shown familiar shapes like five stars and a moon, used in their training.(為了保持烏鴉的興趣并減少它們的沮喪情緒,另一半時間里,研究人員向它們展示了一些熟悉的圖形,比如五顆星星和一輪月亮,這些圖形正是它們訓練時所用的)”可知,在這些實驗中會使用熟悉的形狀是為了吸引烏鴉的注意。故選B。
【11題詳解】
主旨大意題。根據第一段“Crows have a sense of geometry like our own, a new study reveals. They can detect the’ odd one out’ in a set of geometric shapes.(一項新研究顯示,烏鴉具有與人類相同的幾何感知能力。它們能夠辨別出一組幾何圖形中的“與眾不同者”)”以及文章主要說明了新研究顯示烏鴉有幾何感知能力,能從一組幾何圖形中識別出不同的那個,其幾何核心知識源于生物進化。可知,C選項“雀類的幾何感知能力:一種與生俱來的技能”最符合文章標題。故選C。
D
The mystery of how Mozart truly looked may be solved at last, after scientists reconstructed his living face from his skull. Mozart is a western music giant, but the mystery of his appearance has long puzzled academics. Few authentic portraits exist, and those from his lifetime are incomplete.
Cicero Moraes, an expert in facial reconstructions, said he learned of the skull by luck. He said: “Our team has been working long on facial approximations (復原), constantly reconstructing historical figures. During previous studies, we discovered a skull attributed to Mozart.” He continued: “The condition was good, and there were images of the skull with spatial (空間的) references so it was possible to reconstruct it.”
The international team virtually rebuilt Mozart’s skull and combined various techniques for the reconstruction. Using soft tissue thickness markers and projecting key facial features like the nose, ears, and lips, they based their work on measurements from hundreds of adult Europeans. They also applied shape adjustment techniques, adjusting a virtual donor’s head to match Mozart’s skull parameters (參數) to generate a matching face. Finally, they added hair and clothing based on historical references, resulting in a delicate-looking face.
The new reconstruction closely matched two surviving portraits of Mozart from his lifetime: an unfinished 1783 portrait by Joseph Lange, described by Mozart’s wife as “the best likeness,” and a 1789 image by Dora Stock. Mr. Moraes noted that they did not use these portraits as references during the reconstruction, relying only on peer-reviewed techniques. The match was confirmed only after the reconstruction was completed.
The skull itself is not without controversy however. It supposedly passed through various hands, before being donated to the Mozarteum. Numerous studies since have reached different conclusions about its genuineness. Mr Moraes said: “What we do know is that the skull has characteristics consistent with the portraits of him in life. Although this is not proof, it is yet another element that increases the mystery.”
12. What facilitated scientists’ reconstruction of Mozart’s appearance
A. The existing portraits. B. Measurements from Mozart.
C. The skull’s sound state. D. Advances in facial estimates.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The team’s background. B. The theoretical basis of the study.
C. The rebuilding process. D. The comment the team received.
14. Why are an unfinished 1783 portrait and a 1789 image mentioned
A. To explain the mystery of Mozart’s figure. B. To show the accuracy of the reconstruction.
C. To illustrate the challenge the recovery faced. D. To present the comment from Mozart’s wife.
15. What can be inferred from the last sentence
A. The skull in itself is the evidence. B. The portraits are proof of the study.
C. The mystery about Mozart remains. D. The debate about the skull is resolved.
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. B 15. C
【解析】

【12題詳解】
細節理解題。根據第二段中的“The condition was good, and there were images of the skull with spatial (空間的) references so it was possible to reconstruct it.(頭骨保存狀態良好,且有帶空間參考的頭骨圖像,因此有可能進行復原)”可知,頭骨的良好狀態是科學家成功復原的關鍵因素。故選C項。
【13題詳解】
主旨大意題。第三段中的“The international team virtually rebuilt Mozart’s skull and combined various techniques for the reconstruction.(國際團隊通過虛擬技術重建了莫扎特的頭骨,并結合了多種技術來進行這一重建工作)”以及“Finally, they added hair and clothing based on historical references, resulting in a delicate-looking face. (最后,他們根據歷史資料添加了頭發和衣物,最終呈現出一張看上去精致的面孔)”可知,本段詳細描述了從重建頭骨、應用軟組織標記到調整面部特征、添加細節的完整過程。故選C項。
【14題詳解】
推理判斷題。根據第四段中的“The new reconstruction closely matched two surviving portraits of Mozart from his lifetime: an unfinished 1783 portrait by Joseph Lange, described by Mozart’s wife as “the best likeness,” and a 1789 image by Dora Stock. Mr. Moraes noted that they did not use these portraits as references during the reconstruction, relying only on peer-reviewed techniques. The match was confirmed only after the reconstruction was completed.(新的重建結果與莫扎特生前留下的兩幅肖像高度吻合:一幅是約瑟夫·蘭格于1783年創作的未完成肖像,被莫扎特的妻子稱為“最像他的畫像”;另一幅是多拉·斯托克于1789年繪制的畫像。

The Imperfect Art
At seven, I joined an art class. Teachers praised my quick progress, and I loved every moment. But my desire for perfection soon led to restlessness. I would compare my work to that of a more experienced student and feel a growing sense of inadequacy. Each brushstroke seemed to highlight my shortcomings rather than my potential.
One day, I stared blankly at a wooden hand model, feeling defeated. Hours passed and my efforts seemed to be in vain. My art teacher, Mrs. Green, noticed my low spirits. She gently placed a hand on my shoulder and said, “Art is not about perfection, but about expression.” I nodded, but couldn’t shake off my frustration.
After a break, I tried again, accepting that success might not come quickly. But even with this mindset, I struggled. I threw away countless attempts, each feeling like a failure. However, after struggling with numerous versions of this drawing over months, I finally felt satisfied with one. Not because it was the best demonstration of my artistic ability, but rather because mastering a skill that challenged me so thoroughly gave me pride and satisfaction. It became my favorite piece. The challenge I needed to overcome was not the task itself, but being able to continue working at something that didn't come easily.
Last summer, I joined a gymnastics club. I was excited but also nervous. Being the only beginner among more experienced students, the first few weeks were really tough. The other students seemed to balance perfectly on the beam (平衡木), while I stumbled with every step. The fear of falling and looking foolish was overwhelming. I felt like I was slowing everyone else down.
Fortunately, my coach was extremely patient. She taught me over and over again, but I still couldn’t master some basic skills. During one session, with my coach watching closely, I managed to maintain my balance on the beam for a whole two seconds. I was about to celebrate this tiny victory when I lost my balance and fell, landing face-first on the mat.

(1)續寫詞數應為150個左右;
(2)請按如下格式在答題紙的相應位置作答。

Sitting in the rest area, the coach’s words reminded me of my favorite art piece.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
The fall and the others’ laughing were unbearably painful. My face burned with embarrassment as I lay on the mat, the sting of failure sharper than any physical pain. Tears pricked at my eyes, blurring my vision. The echoing laughter felt like a spotlight highlighting my clumsiness, making me want to disappear. I scrambled up quickly, avoiding eye contact, my heart heavy with the thought that I might never be good enough. That tiny moment of balance felt like a cruel joke now, erased by the humiliating fall.
Paragraph 2:
Sitting in the rest area, the coach’s words reminded me of my favorite art piece. She sat beside me and said softly, “Remember, progress isn’t always a straight line. That drawing you’re proud of It took months of ‘imperfect’ tries.” Her words echoed Mrs. Green’s lesson: art wasn’t about perfection. Suddenly, I saw the parallel. Gymnastics, like art, demanded patience and the courage to embrace the messy journey. My pride in that painting stemmed from perseverance, not flawlessness. Taking a deep breath, I wiped my eyes, stood up, and walked back towards the beam, ready to try again, knowing each stumble was part of learning.

It’s a shame that.. the on-screen metrics are slightly less detailed than those on some competing brands.
Capacity: 20,000mAh, 59.99 at Amazon.
◆Anker Nano
Quick and small enough to carry in a trouser pocket, it is ideal for lightly recharging a smartphone.
Why we love it: It’s minimalistic. I’m a big fan of its fold-out USB-C connector, which can be directly plugged into your phone.
It’s a shame that... you’d need something more powerful to charge your laptop.
Capacity: 5,000mAh, 29.84 at Amazon.
◆Belkin BoostCharge
It’s hard to believe this is a cheap option. It speedily charges smartphones and other lower-powered devices.
Why we love it: Neat and impressively light, this is one of those rare power banks that you can carry in a jacket pocket.
It’s a shame that... charging two devices at once reduces the maximum total output from 20W to 15W.
Capacity: 10,000mAh, 9.99 at Amazon.
◆RAVPower Charger
A reliable and outstanding option for those who need a balance between power and portability.
Why we love it: The multiple charging ports allow you to charge different devices simultaneously. Its fast-charging technology ensures that your devices get a quick boost.
It’s a shame that… it lacks the advanced on-screen metrics that some high-end power banks offer.
Capacity: 15,000mAh, 49.99 at Amazon.

What if you could use the plastic waste littering your home country to help solve its housing crisis For architect Oscar Andrés Méndez that inspiration led to an invention that presents his core values.
As part of a three-million-dollar deal with UNICEF Conceptos Plásticos built a new factory in Abidjan and recruited workers, mainly women, to source the plastic needed.
C The efforts made by local government. D. The challenges Conceptos Plásticos faced.

注意:
(1)續寫詞數應為150個左右;
