The Louisville Zoo
Opened in 1969, the Louisville Zoo is just 15 minutes from downtown Louisville, Kentucky. A friend recently treated me to a preview of her planned trip to Italy. After making tea for me, she laid out the itinerary (行程) in military order — the Colosseum, the Sistine Chapel, Pompeii, Venice, the Appian Way, etc. By the time she was done I was worn out, and I hadn’t even set foot outside the house.
I do wish her an enjoyable journey. It’s just that my method of travel is very different. The extent of my planning is generally to identify a destination and then go there, casting fortune to the wind. It’s rare that researchers question theories that make up the backbone of whole fields. But in Evolution Evolving, Kevin Lala and four other evolutionary biologists do just that.
Their philosophically informed discussion challenges the textbook version of evolutionary theory, the natural selection of DNA mutations (突變), which arise at random. Lala and colleagues argue that how an organism develops also plays a central part in evolution. They have been advocating this extended evolutionary theory for more than a decade, adding depth to evolutionary theorizing.
The authors explain how development — influenced by the conditions in which organisms live — drives how an organism looks, behaves and evolves. To demonstrate this, they give the example of the Mexican tetra fish Astyanax mexicanus.
Some populations of A. mexicanus are blind cave fish living in darkness. Other, genetically distinct, consist of sighted, surface dwellers (棲身者). If the surface-dwelling fish are kept in total darkness for two years, they develop traits similar to those of the blind cave fish, including a better ability to store fat — beneficial in a dark environment, where the next meal is hard to come by. The stress of darkness seems to activate sets of genes that change the fishes’ development.
New traits do not arise at random. Some are more likely than others. Understanding such “developmental biases” can enable researchers to better understand how traits originate and what directions future evolution might take. As the authors put it, “evolution must proceed where development leads.”
Another aspect of evolution often ignored or downplayed by traditional evolutionists is the passing down of traits through generations in ways that do not involve variations in DNA structure. Furthermore, some organisms construct environments to benefit the development of following generations. Dung beetles, for instance, make balls of cow waste, into which they add their own waste as food, and lay a single egg. The nutrients and microbes in these balls influence how the young develop, and in turn the sizes and shapes of the beetles and how they evolve.
In my opinion, this is a fundamental shift in thinking. Rather than just studying which traits are selected, evolutionary researchers also need to establish the developmental construction and inheritance (遺傳) of these traits.

After 20 years of efforts, a 26-foot-tall statue of Atlas is once again standing guard at the ancient Temple of Zeus in the city of Agrigento in Sicily. The statue, created in the fifth century B.C.E., was one of 38 similar Atlas monuments built into the temple. They stood in a line between columns with their arms raised, appearing to hold the structure upright.
In Greek mythology (神話), Atlas ignored orders from Zeus, the ruler of the universe, in a war. So, he was forced to hold up the sky on his shoulders. Unlike the mythological Atlas, however, the stone likenesses were unable to hold up Zeus’ temple forever. Ultimately, earthquakes and other events caused the structure to collapse.
For many years, pieces of the statues were spread out around the site amongst other ancient ruins. In 1812, Charles Robert Cockerell, a British architect, first identified one of these sandstone heads during a visit to Agrigento. A century later, in 1920, archaeologist Pirro Marconi became the first person to attempt to reconstruct one of the Atlases, which is now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento. The seeds of the current project began in 2004, when the Valley of the Temples Park conducted a research campaign at the site.
But restoring Atlas in a standing position was particularly challenging, as researchers couldn’t simply pile the pieces of the statue on top of one another. Instead, they attached them to metal shelves, which are supported by a larger metal structure.
The restoration has faced scrutiny (審查) ever since officials first announced it several years ago. “No archaeologist would agree on the use of ancient sculpture even if the purpose is to highlight the site’s antiquity,” said C. Brian Rose, an archaeologist at the University of Pennsylvania. But offcials like Renato Schifani, the Sicilian governor, think that the statue’s restoration is a substantial and impressive achievement.
“This statue of ancient Agrigento, which after many years of studies and research we can observe in its natural position, is the heart of an important museum project of the entire area of the Temple of Zeus,” Schifani said.

After 20 years of efforts, a 26-foot-tall statue of Atlas is once again standing guard at the ancient Temple of Zeus in the city of Agrigento in Sicily. The statue, created in the fifth century B.C.E., was one of 38 similar Atlas monuments built into the temple.
