English-language editions of two entertaining and insightful novels, Cat Country and Mr Ma and Son, written by one of China’s most accomplished novelists, the late Lao She, will soon be on bookshelves around the country.
Cat Country, arguably China’s first venture into the field of science fiction, centers around a space traveler from China who crash-lands on an alien planet, where he discovers a country inhabited entirely by Cat People.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and literary critic Ian Johnson says in the book’s introduction. Lao She stretches himself further than ever, producing one of the most remarkable, complicated and insightful novels of modern China.
The sarcastic humor and metaphorical writing are believed to be influenced by the late author’s early experiences in London. Lao She taught Chinese at the University of London’s School of Oriental Studies from 1924 to 1929, a time when the British still viewed China and the Chinese with a strong mixture of distrust, contempt, guilt and fear after two opium (鴉片) wars and the Boxer Rebellion (1900).
It was there that he began his career as a writer of patriotic but complex fictions about contemporary China, writes University of London’s senior Chinese literature lecturer Julia Lovell in the introduction of Mr Ma and Son, who calls it “the first Chinese novel to face directly British racism toward China”.
Based on Lao She’s London experiences, the novel displays the Mas’ attempts to deal with the deeply rooted cultural misconceptions by 1920s English society after they move there to run an antiques shop. As they go about building their new lives in London and striving to maintain a sense of cultural self, their own relationships are tested.

The sarcastic humor and metaphorical writing are believed to be influenced by the late author’s early experiences in London. Lao She taught Chinese at the University of London’s School of Oriental Studies from 1924 to 1929, a time when the British still viewed China and the Chinese with a strong mixture of distrust, contempt, guilt and fear after two opium (鴉片) wars and the Boxer Rebellion (1900).
It was there that he began his career as a writer of patriotic but complex fictions about contemporary China, writes University of London’s senior Chinese literature lecturer Julia Lovell in the introduction of Mr Ma and Son, who calls it “the first Chinese novel to face directly British racism toward China”.
Based on Lao She’s London experiences, the novel displays the Mas’ attempts to deal with the deeply rooted cultural misconceptions by 1920s English society after they move there to run an antiques shop. As they go about building their new lives in London and striving to maintain a sense of cultural self, their own relationships are tested.
“We felt that these two books offer a fascinating insight into how he works and thinks, exploring China’s place in the world and China’s self-image through evocative (喚起感情的) and beautiful writing that is as relevant today as it was when it was first written in the 1930s,” says Jo Lusby, managing director of Penguin China.

Old buildings tend to be regarded as throwaways and suitable for being torn down. Most people have not fully realized the “green” values that are linked with the upkeep of existing buildings. Actually, in fact, keeping and making use of old architectures is one of the most environmentally-sound things we can do—more than the construction of any new structures that claims to be “green”.

My little river cottage in West Virginia, which is constructed with chestnut sourced from the period prior to the die-off of the chestnut trees, is such that the material in question may never again be obtained. However, the prospective purchaser planned to tear it down, which, in my view, is not only a mark of disrespect for the material but also goes against the concept of sustainable development.
As the Preservation Green Lab report demonstrates, it takes 10 to 80 years for a new building that is 30 percent more efficient than an average-performing existing building to overcome the negative climate change consequences linked to the construction, which emphasizes the necessity of ongoing utilization (使用) of pre-existing buildings and communities, effectively preventing or minimizing the utilization of forests, farms, wildlife habitats, and open areas for novel construction undertakings.
As Carl Elefante of Quinn-Evans Architects brilliantly said, “The greenest building is one that is already built.” Hopefully, the public will come to a uniform opinion that buildings currently existing are worthy of more care and attention.

Why are we so sure that the way we see people, situations and politics is accurate, and the way other people see them is foolishly wrong The answer, according to new research by UCLA psychology professor Matthew Lieberman,lies in a region of the brain he calls the“gestalt cortex,”which helps people make sense of information that is unclear or incomplete and dismiss alternative interpretations.
People often mistake their own understanding of people and events as objective truth, rather than as merely their own interpretation. That phenomenon, called “naive realism,” leads people to believe that they should have the final word on the world around them. “The evidence from neural data is clear that the gestalt cortex is central to how we construct our version of reality,” Lieberman said.
Mental acts that are organized, effortless and based on our experiences tend to occur in the gestalt cortex. For example, a person might see someone else smiling and without giving it any apparent thought, perceive that the other person is happy. “Because those inferences are immediate and effortless, they typically feel more like ‘seeing reality’— even though happiness is an internal psychological state — than they do like ‘thinking’,” Lieberman said.
“We believe we have merely witnessed things as they are, which makes it more difficult to appreciate, or even consider, other perspectives,” he said. “The mind emphasizes its best answer and rejects the rest of solutions. The mind may initially process the world like a democracy where every alternative interpretation gets a vote, but it quickly ends up like an authoritarian regime (獨裁政體) where one interpretation rules with an iron fist and disagreement is removed. In selecting one interpretation, the gestalt cortex literally abandons others.”
The gestalt cortex is located behind the ear, and it is situated between the parts of the brain responsible for processing vision, sound and touch;those parts are connected by a structure called the temporoparietal junction, which is part of the gestalt cortex. In the new study, Lieberman proposes that the temporoparietal junction is central to conscious experience and that it helps organize and integrate psychological features of situations that people see so they can make sense of them effortlessly.
