Passage 2.
Last May I went to a lake with my family. I thought it would be a normal fun day of swimming, but I was wrong.
My brothers, cousins and uncle were with me in a swimming area with a lifeguard (救生員). My parents were eating lunch under a tree nearby.
I was resting in the water when something hit my leg. I knew it was an alligator(短吻鱷) as soon as it bit (咬) me. I cried for help at once, but my family didn’t know what was wrong. I started to hit the nine-foot-long alligator, and then I remembered something I learned at an alligator education park: The nose is the most sensitive (敏感的) part of an alligator! Passage 3.
It might be a surprise to hear that being bored sometimes is good for kids. But it’s true. Boredom can help you kids be present and understand the world around you. One of the great things kids have is curiosity about the things that adults take for granted (把……不當回事), like the colors of a butterfly and the noises of a truck. Making those discoveries is how you learn. If you never get bored, you never discover how interesting the world really is.
Kids’ brains need to stay active, but they need downtime (休息), too. To leave space for downtime, you can schedule (為……安排時間) it with your family. It is helpful. Make sure that you have a couple of afternoons or evenings per week when you don’t have an organized activity.
Boredom can help you be creative, too. Thinking out of the box can help you solve problems that seem small to adults, but are huge to you. If your schedules and brains are always filled with activities, you’ll have no need to imagine a story, wonder how things work, etc.
Of course, being bored all the time isn’t healthy. Where’s the line between too much boredom and not enough It’s different for every kid and every family, and it may take some time to find out where your line is. It can be hard to be bored. But it will achieve something else important: developing you into interesting, funny, thoughtful people who can have dinner time conversations and deal with long car rides. Passage 4.
I’m often asked the question “How did you become a reporter ” You see, everybody expected me to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a doctor. Well, during my last year of my school I visited a career counsellor (職業顧問) named Lisa and I drove her crazy with my choices.
My first choice was a chocolate tester. Although Lisa didn’t know the job well, she got me some information about it. I discovered that chocolate testers make a lot of money, so I was sure I had found my dream job. However, when I found out that chocolate tester don’t just sit around eating chocolate all day, I lost my interest.
Next, I thought of becoming a football referee (裁判). I had loved football from a young age, but being a professional footballer was out of the question, as I couldn’t play very well. However, It seems that referees must be able to run two and a half miles in less than twelve minutes and they are required to take exams throughout, their training. So my dream of becoming a referee died.
Finally, I had this idea of becoming a dog stylist (造型師). That was after I realized how much money our dog stylist, Shirley, was being paid. Getting high scores on tests is not easy, but it gives me a strong feeling of satisfaction. When I was in Grade 7, I didn’t dare to speak in my English class because of my shyness. But after a monthly test in which I got the highest score in my class, I found my self-confidence.
