A number of Black farmers in the Gulf South are growing crops with the climate in mind. One of these farmers is Hilery Gobert, who owns a 65-acre farm in Iowa. He has been trying to improve the soil since he started farming in 2020. To do that, he rotates(輪換)crops and uses cover crops to keep nutrients in the ground. The land now supports a variety of crops, including eggplants and watermelons.
Gobert also grows rice on farm. Instead of flooding the fields with water and producing methane, Gobert grows his rice by using drip-watering to get water directly to the roots. “In our attempt to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we’re looking at ways of growing rice as an alternative to the continuous flooding of the fields, as we’ve done for hundreds of years here,”Gobert says.
Using less water to grow rice is an example of climate-smart agriculture. Cover crops, notill(免耕)farming and crop rotation are all considered good practices for the climate and for farming. The idea is that farmers can reduce pollution that contributes to human-caused climate change while still having a good production of food to make a living. The science isn’t clear on what impacts climate-smart agriculture has on the climate. However, it does have benefits for farmers and communities.
Gobert comes from generations of farmers who believed the land could provide everything the family needed to survive. His father left him with valuable advice, which Gobert carries with him to this day. “One of his statements to me that I’ll never forget as a child is that all of these inputs that we’re bringing into our farm are great, and we’re able to make money off of it, but one day we’re going to pay for not taking care of the land,” Gobert says.
For now, he wants to leave the farm better off than he found it for the next generation of farmers in his family.
24.What is Hilery Gobert’s farming practice
A.Trying to add nutrients to the ground.
B.Following the advice given by his father.
C.Planting various crops in turn every other year.
D.Improving the soil without releasing greenhouse gas.
25.Why does Hilery Gobert grow rice without using much water
A.To save water and protect the farm.
B.To set a good example of farming wisely.
C.To reduce pollution while having a good harvest.
D.To carry out the guidelines made by the government.
26.What is implied in Hilery Gobert’s words in paragraph 4
A.He promotes sustainable farming. B.Land is crucial for some farmers.
C.His father was an expert in farming. D.Farmers should have faith in the land.
27.What might be the best title for the text
A.Farmers Practice Climate-smart Agriculture B.The Importance of Farming Smartly
C.Hilery Gobert’s Smart Farm D.Farmers in the Gulf South
To achieve “net zero” by 2045, countries need to cut their emissions (排放) by 85%, compared to 1990. Sweden has achieved an 80% reduction since 1990, securing its place as the second most sustainable country in the world after Finland. And yet, Sweden’s economy has been growing steadily since 1970 and ranked sixth in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking Report.
Sweden has adopted an aggressive carbon tax as part of tax reform. A carbon tax is a charge on carbon to inspire businesses to reduce their emissions and find renewable alternatives. The tax rate has increased steadily since the 1990s and currently covers 40% of Sweden’s carbon emissions. Instead of the public’s backlash, the carbon tax was accepted by the Swedish public. Meanwhile, the nation maintained stable growth and may have even seen economic improvement as it had reduced other taxes to account for the new carbon tax. Sweden also established a Climate Policy Council that evaluates whether government policies are in line with its climate goals.
Though Sweden is a heavily industrialized country with energy-intensive industries such as steel, it has managed to massively decarbonize its economy. Naturally, Sweden has a great supply of wind and water, and forests that cover 70% of its land that absorb carbon dioxide. Sweden took advantage of these natural opportunities. It began cutting fossil (化石) fuels in the 1970s during a global oil crisis, choosing that time to build on nuclear energy and further establish hydropower and wind energy.
Sweden also helped reduce emissions from heating and energy-intensive industries by investing in district heating systems powered by biofuel and waste incineration (焚燒). District heating systems, though expensive, are more efficient since they distribute heat to multiple houses and industrial areas instead of requiring separate heating units in each building.
Swedish citizens have been engaged in making sustainable choices, such as buying ecolabeled products and sorting waste. Data shows 40% of Swedes purchased eco-labeled products in July, more than the European average, according to the European Commission. Also, 88%of all metal cans and PET bottles were recycled.
28.What does Sweden’s story in paragraph 1 show
A.Reducing carbon emissions is not very challenging.
B.Climate action can coexist with economic progress.
C.Sweden is most concerned about reducing emissions.
D.Economic growth should not give way to climate action.
29.What does the underlined word “backlash” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Ignorance. B.Confusion. C.Indifference. D.Resistance.
30.What did the Swedish government realize in the 1970s
A.It should protect all its forests. B.It should develop clean energy.
C.It should set an example to the world. D.It should not be highly industrialized.
31.What is implied about Swedish citizens in the last paragraph
A.They try to live a green life. B.They lack sustainable choices.
C.They face too many regulations. D.They need good heating systems.
Scientists aiming to address the ongoing obesity (肥胖) crisis have made an important discovery: Intermittent (斷斷續續的) calorie restriction causes significant changes in the gut — the tube in the body through which food passes — and the brain, potentially opening up new ways to maintain a healthy weight.
Researchers from China studied 25 obese volunteers over a period of 62 days. During this period, the volunteers took part in an intermittent energy restriction(IER)program, which was a system involving careful control of calorie intake and diets on some days. The results were striking: the participants lost an average of 7.6 kilograms or about 7.8% of their body weight. Beyond the weight loss, the researchers observed significant changes in the participants’ brain activity and gut microbiome (微生物菌群) composition.
“From the study, we know that the gut and the brain are closely linked. The observed changes in the gut microbiome and in the activity in addiction-related brain regions during and after weight loss are highly dynamic and coupled over time,” said health researcher Qiang Zeng from the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Diseases. The changes in brain activity, spotted via MRI scans, were in regions known to be important in the regulation of appetite and addiction. Moreover, the changes in the gut microbiome, which were analyzed through stool samples and blood measurements, were linked to particular brain regions.
“For example, some gut bacteria were negatively associated with activity in the left inferior frontal orbital gyrus, a brain area involved in executive function, including our willpower when it comes to food intake. The microbiome in the gut produces chemicals, which get to the brain through nerves and the blood. In return, the brain controls eating behavior, while nutrients from our diet change the composition of the gut microbiome,” explained the researcher.
More than a billion people worldwide are now thought to be obese, which leads to an increased risk of many different health issues from cancer to heart disease. “Knowing more about how our brains and guts are dependent on each other could make a huge difference in effectively preventing and reducing obesity,” said biomedical scientist Liming Wang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
32.What is the significance of the discovery
A.It illustrates the role of exercise in keeping a healthy weight.
B.It clarifies the psychological effects of dieting on obese people.
C.It confirms the effectiveness of traditional weight loss methods.
D.It reveals the impact of intermittent calorie restriction on obesity.
33.What does the study find out
A.Gut health improves decision-making processes in the brain.
B.Gut bacteria are dynamically linked to addiction-related brain regions.
C.Brain controls the production of bacteria in the gut microbiome directly.
D.The gut microbiome negatively impacts the brain’s addiction-related regions.
34.How does the gut microbiome influence the brain
A.By changing the structure of brain cells.
B.By releasing energy that fuels brain activity.
C.By producing chemicals that go into the brain.
D.By breaking down nutrients needed for the brain.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A.To persuade obese people to lose weight.
B.To inform readers about a new study on weight loss.
C.To encourage the public to adopt healthy eating habits.
D.To explore the relationship between obesity and overall health.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view, doing regular foot baths benefits you in several ways.
It helps the flow in the body. It allows your Qi and blood to run better. 36 Therefore, exposure to a heated environment will allow the blood and other liquids to flow more easily through the body.
It reduces blood pressure. According to many studies conducted, even one 20-minute foot bath in hot water will reduce blood pressure levels within the body. 37
It detoxifies your body. As the hot water warms up your feet, it will begin to circulate warmer blood around your body to the point where you will feel warmth in your chest first and then eventually your forehead. 38 This helps drive out toxins and clear our lymph nodes.
39 Your body and organs need them in order to function, so enabling these to get there faster will allow your organs to function optimally. This includes delivering more oxygen to key organs such as the heart and brain, which will also allow you to think more clearly.
It helps calm the mind. This is in connection with how hot foot baths allow for more blood to pass through the brain over the same period of time. 40 When paired with a steady, regular breath in and breath out, this will help create clarity and calm in the brain and mind. I recommend being intentional about this to allow time from our busy lives to benefit both the mind and body simultaneously.
A.Heat expands things.
B.Bath until you feel the heat.
C.It means an increased flow of oxygen.
D.You will notice yourself sweating, which is a good thing!
E.It delivers more nutrients and oxygen to parts of the body.
F.These habits can surely help you achieve healthy blood pressure.
G.Imagine the on-going benefits of this if you can do this repeatedly!

M: Have you ever imagined your car flying up and over the cars in front of you in a traffic jam This is no longer a dream! Joby Aviation is an American company. In June, 2023, it was allowed to start testing its new air taxis. An air taxi is a small aircraft. But unlike a plane, it doesn’t need a long runway. It can go straight up and down like a helicopter. Joby hopes to start carrying passengers for a fee by 21. The company has set up a program with Delta Air Lines, and an air taxi will be flown by a pilot. One can carry up to four other passengers. And it can reach a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour. The test shows that an air taxi can go about 160 kilometers before its batteries run out. As for the fare, it plans to charge about two US dollars per kilometer. Joby says its air taxis cost less and are quieter than helicopters. Many other companies around the world are also working on air taxis. But there is still a lot of work to do before air taxis become common. For example, governments need to make rules about where and when these aircraft can fly.

故填in。
故填was placed。
此處為it takes+時間+ to do sth. 故填to complete。
故填has become。
故填The。
故填where。

Suddenly, the door of the cold storage was opened by Daniel from outside. Daniel shone his flashlight around and saw the unconscious Ava at once. He threw the flashlight away and shouted Ava’s name, but she gave no response. Daniel immediately called the emergency number 911. The hospital ambulance soon arrived at the factory. After emergency treatment, Ava was sent to the hospital and gradually recovered her health in the following days. After being discharged from the hospital, in no time, Ava went to thank Daniel for saving her. She asked Daniel curiously, “How did you know I might be in the cold storage ”
Daniel told Ava that it was her kindness and enthusiasm that saved her. He explained that he’d worked in this factory for 15 years, and every day, hundreds of workers came in and out, but Ava was the only one who said hello to him every morning when she came to work and said goodbye to him every evening when she left. “That day, I didn’t hear you say ‘Goodbye’. So I decided to have a look. I searched the whole factory but couldn’t find you. I thought you must be in the cold storage. I hurried to open the door. Sure enough, I found you there!”
