Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潛艇), passed away in Wuhan at the age of 99 on February 6th, 2025. He was widely regarded as the “father of China’s nuclear submarines”.
Born in March 1926 to a family of doctors in Guangdong, Huang was the third child of his parents. After spending his boyhood in wartime, he went to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. Upon graduation in 1949, Huang began his lifelong career in the shipbuilding industry. In 1958, Huang was secretly called to Beijing to join the research team tasked with designing (設計) China’s first nuclear-powered submarine. From that point on, for the next 30 years, he hardly ever went home. At that time, China lacked (缺乏) the basic conditions to develop nuclear submarines. Not only did none of the researchers have any knowledge in this field, but other countries were highly protective of such technologies, offering few technical references (技術參考).
So Huang and other researchers started by searching newspapers and magazines for information. After carefully analysing that information and studying two US submarine models, they finally came up with five plans. The team members didn’t have computers or digital calculators, so they used abacuses (算盤) to solve problems. To ensure the results were correct, they were divided into three groups to do the math at the same time and would do the math again if the three values (數值) were different. After years of hard work, China finally built its first nuclear-powered submarine in 1970, becoming the fifth nation to have nuclear submarines.
Huang’s name remained secret until 1987, when a magazine in Shanghai was allowed to publish a report revealing (展示) only his family name. Even in his 90s, Huang visited his office every weekday morning to review materials of his know-how and experience. He also provided advice for young researchers on solving technical problems. In recognition of his great contributions, Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honour, in 2019.
19. Why was it difficult for China to develop nuclear submarines at the beginning
A. There were no shipbuilding industries in China.
B. The researchers had too much knowledge in other fields.
C. Other countries shared their technologies freely.
D. China didn’t have basic conditions and technical references.
20 How did Huang and other researchers get information for designing
A. By asking foreign experts. B. By buying advanced technology.
C. By checking newspapers and magazines. D. By working on their own without any information.
21. What can we infer from the fact that Huang’s name remained secret until 1987
A. Huang changed his name at that time. B. Huang was not important in the project.
C. Huang didn’t want his name to be known. D. The project that Huang worked on was top-secret.
22. What can we learn from the story of Huang Xuhua
A. Where there is a will there is a way. B. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. The early bird catches the worm.

“Thank you for your email. I have left to follow my dream of knitting (編織) sweaters for penguins and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office… until my penguin friends are happy.” This is part of an email received by a Chinese student studying in the UK from her teacher, which has recently become popular online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The idea was started by the Penguin Foundation (基金會) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia. The project began due to a serious oil spill (泄漏) near Phillip Island in the late 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins dropped rapidly. When little penguins became covered in oil, they tried to clean themselves with their beaks (喙), but eating the oil could be deadly. The oil also made it difficult for them to swim or hunt for food.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked knitters worldwide to make sweaters for affected (受影響的) penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil. It’s a good method to protect penguins. In 2001, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. Thanks to the sweaters, 96 percent of the affected penguins were successfully saved. However, some people have questioned the idea of animals wearing human-made clothing. Certain bird protection groups have expressed worries that these sweaters might put more stress on the penguins’ bodies.
The foundation explained that the sweaters were only a short-term way and will not be used when the penguins stay healthy. To ensure the penguins are protected and wearing appropriate clothes, the foundation has provided detailed instructions for knitters. For example, the total length of the finished sweater should be no more than 18 cm, the width across the body no more than 12 cm and the width of the bottom opening no more than 11 cm.
23. How does the writer introduce the topic of the text
A. By telling a joke. B. By introducing a teacher.
C. By telling a famous saying. D. By describing an email.
24. What does the underlined word “appropriate” in the last paragraph most likely mean
A. proper B. thick C. plastic D. valuable
25. What can we learn about the knitting project
A. Its purpose is to protect the penguins from coldness. B. It has been supported by everyone.
C. It will be a long-term way. D. It requires strict size instructions.
26. What can be the best title of the text
A. Two serious oil spills B. Knit sweaters for penguins
C. Penguins and human activities D. Pay close attention to affected penguins

During the May Day holiday in China, something exciting happened. Many tourists who climbed tall mountains started using AI-powered robotic supports. These are like smart aids for their legs! This shows that China is moving forward in “smart tourism”.
In Shandong, there is a famous mountain called Mount Tai, which is very tall, with a top over 1,500 meters and more than 7,000 steps. Instead of climbing all those steps on their own, many tourists chose to use robotic legs for help. These cool tools became so popular that there were long lines of people waiting to try them. Li, head of Taishan Cultural Tourism Group, mentioned that they began offering 10 of these supports in January and the number has grown to 500 by May! Renting these tools costs 80 yuan for three hours. It might seem a little bit expensive, but they help people climb faster and more easily. A 26-year-old man from Beijing named Yan used one and said, “I don’t want my legs to feel tired after climbing. These robotic legs make it much easier and more enjoyable!”
Using high-tech tools to help in mountain climbing is becoming more and more popular. In Anhui, Huangshan Mountain also plans to introduce smart knee straps and walking sticks this month. These smart tools not only make climbing more interesting but also attract people’s attention to the use of new technology in our daily life. A travel website called Tuniu pointed out that AI-powered products can draw more young people to places of interest, providing greater development space for tourism industry and economy (經濟). Wei, who started the website, said these tools will lower the risk of mountain climbing, and lead a new trend among people of all ages.
The widespread use of robotic supports shows that China is moving forward in “smart tourism” and technology is not about replacing humankind, but about expanding the possibility of humankind experiencing nature. In the future, human-machine collaboration (協作) will meet the growing travel needs of visitors and continue to bring us new surprises.
27. What tools did many tourists use while climbing Mount Tai according to the passage
A. Robotic supports. B. Smartphones. C. Paper maps. D. Ropeways.
28. How did Wei feel about the introduction of high-tech tools on mountain climbing
A. Disappointed. B. Doubtful. C. Hopeful. D. Unsupported.
29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us
A. The developing process and types of robotic supports.
B. The purpose and future of using robotic supports.
C. The advantages and popularity of robotic supports.
D. The doubts and costs of robotic supports.
30. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2 …)
A. B. C. D.

Like many other foreigners, Rosalind Oliver’s first touch of Chinese Tai Chi came from popular kung fu movies. However, she has become a Tai Chi master herself, teaching it to both Chinese and foreigners.
Oliver’s journey with Tai Chi began in her early 20s, when her backache was always troubling her and she was turning to an exercise. Then she discovered advertisement classes about Tai Chi by accident and decided to try the “mysterious” eastern sport. Right away Oliver fell in love with the beautiful movement of Tai Chi. To her joy, she found that her back pains disappeared after years of practice.
Oliver later met her late husband, who was also her Tai Chi teacher. In the early 1990s, the couple opened their own Tai Chi school in the UK. To further understand Tai Chi, they decided to start a journey to China. However, three years after moving to Shanghai in 2000, her husband died, leaving her alone to work on Tai Chi.
The 58-year-old British woman recalled that it was a hard time for her. However, she was thankful to Chinese friends in Shanghai who supported her through the painful process. “They didn't treat me like a foreigner, but rather like a friend.” Oliver said.
In 2005, Oliver set up the Double Dragon Alliance Cultural Center, which acts as a bridge for foreign people to get a better understanding of Chinese culture such as traditional Chinese medicine and Peking Opera.
