When I felt strong enough to get dressed and go downstairs, Diana and Mary looked after me very kindly, and made me feel welcome in their pleasant home. Their brother, however, seemed strict and cold. He was between twenty eight and thirty, fair haired and extremely handsome. Diana and Mary were curious about my past, but sensitive enough to avoid asking questions which would hurt me. St John, on the other hand, made determined efforts to discover who I was, but I, just as firmly, refused to explain more than necessary.
高分有招 常見的與“性格描寫”相關的高分詞塊有: a short temper 急性子 a strong will 堅強的意志 a difficult person 一個不好相處的人 lack self confidence 缺乏自信 with pleasant personality 性格和善

(2024·全國甲卷·閱讀理解D篇)“I didn't like the ending,” I said to my favorite college professor. It was my junior year of undergraduate, and I was doing an independent study on Victorian literature. I had just finished reading The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, and I was heartbroken with the ending. Prof. Gracie, with all his patience, asked me to think about it beyond whether I liked it or not. He suggested I think about the difference between endings that I wanted for the characters and endings that were right for the characters, endings that satisfied the story even if they didn't have a traditionally positive outcome. Of course, I would have preferred a different ending for Tom and Maggie Tulliver, but the ending they got did make the most sense for them.
This was an aha moment for me, and I never thought about endings the same way again. From then on, if I wanted to read an ending guaranteed to be happy, I'd pick up a love romance. If I wanted an ending I couldn't guess, I'd pick up a mystery One where I kind of knew what was going to happen, historical fiction. Choosing what to read became easier.
But writing the end — that's hard. It's hard for writers because endings carry so much weight with readers. You have to balance creating an ending that's unpredictable, but doesn't seem to come from nowhere, one that fits what's right for the characters.
That's why this issue (期) of Writer's Digest aims to help you figure out how to write the best ending for whatever kind of writing you're doing. If it's short stories, Peter Mountford breaks down six techniques you can try to see which one helps you stick the landing. Elizabeth Sims analyzes the final chapters of five great novels to see what key points they include and how you can adapt them for your work.
This issue won't tell you what your ending should be — that's up to you and the story you're telling — but it might provide what you need to get there.,

Needless to say, John was not content with the result. Surprisingly, he should have made so many silly mistakes, which made him extremely ashamed and guilty. Thinking of the disappointed expression of his parents, a deep sense of shame spread into his mind. So ashamed was he that he was on the point of crying. Meanwhile, when John looked back on what he had done this term, he knew this result was expected. He blamed himself a lot. Although he was deeply discouraged, he didn’t lose heart. He made up his mind to quit playing computer games and focus on his study from then on. Fortunately, his teacher also came to his assistance, encouraging him to be responsible for himself and his future. Now he is busy with his new learning journey with full confidence.

When I felt strong enough to get dressed and go downstairs, Diana and Mary looked after me very kindly, and made me feel welcome in their pleasant home. Their brother, however, seemed strict and cold. He was between twenty-eight and thirty, fair-haired and extremely handsome. Diana and Mary were curious about my past, but sensitive enough to avoid asking questions which would hurt me. St John, on the other hand, made determined efforts to discover who I was, but I, just as firmly, refused to explain more than necessary.

He suggested I think about the difference between endings that I
wanted for the characters and endings that were right for the characters, endings that satisfied the story even if they didn't have a traditionally positive outcome.
This issue won't tell you what your ending should be — that's up to you and the story you're telling — but it might provide what you need to get there.

(2025·河北部分重點中學聯考)In Telangana, southern India, a 17-year-old teenager, Hemesh Chadalavada, is making waves with a game-changing invention that has the potential to revolutionize dementia (癡呆) care.
When Hemesh was 12, his grandmother Jayasree, then 63, accidentally left the gas on in the kitchen after making herself a cup of tea. The incident frightened Hemesh who found himself wondering what would have happened if he hadn't been there.
Witnessing his grandmother suffer from dementia, Hemesh knew that he had to do something, so he turned to the Internet. After watching robotics courses online and taking advantage of his passion for coding, Hemesh set about creating a smart device.
He spent time in a day centre to learn more about the needs of people with dementia. And 20 failed versions later, the Alpha Monitor was born. Using advanced machine learning technology, the device, which can be worn on the wrist, sends an automatic alert to caregivers when any abnormal activity is detected, such as if the user falls down, wanders off, or has an accident. While other devices rely on Wi-Fi and are therefore unable to detect movements outside a limited range, the Alpha Monitor uses long-range technology that can detect a person's movements more than a mile away in cities and three miles away in the countryside.
Sadly, Jayasree passed away last year, but her death has only reinforced Hemesh's determination to continue his mission of improving dementia care far and wide. Dhruv Saidava, Hemesh's mentor, said, “I first met Hemesh in 2019 during Ideate for India ... Hemesh stood out. What set him apart was his exceptional talent for thorough research and hands-on ability.”
In future, he plans to do research at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and improve the Alpha Monitor so that it's ready for market. He has made it clear that he wants the device to be sold at an affordable price so that it's accessible to people in less developed countries.

(2025·成都模擬)Schools need to give students all the tools they need when they graduate. Besides teaching the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, teaching about mindfulness, and mental health are important life skills for young people to have. The state of Florida agrees.
Now, public schools in Florida have been required to teach five or more hours about mental health for students in grades 6-12.This new idea was welcomed by the Florida Board of Education in July and is being carried out as a potential lifesaver.
The new curriculum requires students to learn about the symptoms (癥狀) of mental illness and where to find help if they are feeling sad or have other problems and even teaches the teenagers how to help their friends and classmates if they see them struggling.
“We know that 50 percent of all mental illness cases begin by age 14, so we are being active in our commitment to provide our kids with the necessary tools to see them through their successes and challenges. Providing mental health instruction is another important step forward in supporting our families,” Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said.
Florida is the third state, following New York and Virginia in 2020, to pass laws that require mental health education in schools. According to CNN, the New York law updated the health curriculum to include mental health for elementary, middle and high school students. The Virginia law required that mental health education be provided for 9th and 10th graders.
These three states in the US are taking bold steps to help youth deal with the intricacy of life as they grow from teenagers into adults. It is a confusing world they face and giving them the tools they need is essential. Mental health is something that should be taught in schools in all the US and across the globe.

(2025·洛陽模擬)All families experience conflicts from time to time. Disagreeing with others — even those you love — is generally a part of all types of close relationships. 9 For those who wish to discover how to solve family conflicts, some of the tips below may help.
Learn how to emotionally control.
Emotions can be powerful. 10 However, working toward building your abilities in this way can make a big difference in how you handle all types of conflicts and challenges in life and relationships. Something as simple as deep breathing can help calm the mind.
11
Sometimes, arguments between people escalate (加劇) when one or all parties interpret that they're not being heard. Making a conscious effort to invite each family involved in a conflict to tell their side can help de-escalate emotions and move participants in the direction of a resolution.
Explore different formats of conflict resolution.
12 Being open to different methods and formats of conflict resolution can make the family feel more comfortable expressing their points of view and agreeing on solutions. For example, some people may spend time alone organizing their thoughts. Allowing them to put their thoughts down on paper instead of presenting them orally may be beneficial.
Avoid interrupting.
According to research, even a two-second interruption is enough to make us lose the thread of what we're saying. An interruption can make us lose our focus and even the potential to feel satisfied at having fully expressed ourselves. Avoid interrupting family when they're explaining their side of a conflict. 13
A.Let others speak.
B.Communicate directly.
C.Not every human is born to handle conflicts in a proper way.
D.The way in which families handle conflicts is the most important.
E.And remaining perfectly in control of them in every situation isn't always easy.
F.It can help ensure they can express themselves fully and feel heard and understood.
G.And you may be able to influence how others in your family handle conflicts over time.

11.選A 根據下文“Making a conscious effort to invite each family involved in a conflict to tell their side can help de-escalate emotions and move participants in the direction of a resolution.” 故A選項“ Let others speak.”
12.選D 根據本段小標題“Explore different formats of conflict resolution.” 故D選項“The way in which families handle conflicts is the most important.”
13.選F 根據上文“Avoid interrupting family when they're explaining their side of a conflict.”

(2025·河北部分重點中學聯考)In Telangana, southern India, a 17 year old teenager, Hemesh Chadalavada, is making waves with a game changing invention that has the potential to revolutionize dementia (癡呆) care.
When Hemesh was 12, his grandmother Jayasree, then 63, accidentally left the gas on in the kitchen after making herself a cup of tea. The incident frightened Hemesh who found himself wondering what would have happened if he hadn’t been there.
While other devices rely on Wi Fi and are therefore unable to detect movements outside a limited range, the Alpha Monitor uses long range technology that can detect a person’s movements more than a mile away in cities and three miles away in the countryside.
Sadly, Jayasree passed away last year, but her death has only reinforced Hemesh’s determination to continue his mission of improving dementia care far and wide. Dhruv Saidava, Hemesh’s mentor, said, “I first met Hemesh in 2019 during Ideate for India ... Hemesh stood out. What set him apart was his exceptional talent for thorough research and hands on ability.”
In future, he plans to do research at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and improve the Alpha Monitor so that it’s ready for market. He has made it clear that he wants the device to be sold at an affordable price so that it’s accessible to people in less developed countries.
