21-year-old Jasmine Harrison completed the 2020 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in 70 days, 3 hours and 48 minutes — a new world record for the youngest female to row alone across the Atlantic.
Harrison, who’s from North Yorkshire, England, didn’t have loads of experience in rowing long distances. In her childhood, she could not even dream of such an ambition. She’d only gotten the idea three years earlier when she happened to be in Antigua, teaching swimming, and saw the end of the 2017 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. “Talking to a family member of a young man that had just completed it, I got to know just how amazing a thing it was. I didn’t say ‘not a chance I would do that,’ but it was more a fact of why not do it ” she said.
Every day, Harrison would row for about 12 hours, pushing her 550-pound boat she bought with some money across the ocean, covering roughly 90 kilometers. The journey left her with much time all by herself, which she said she enjoyed. But things got a little harder after her speaker fell in the water and she could no longer listen to her music.
She had other company along the way. She saw lots of sea life, including several whales. One even rose out of the ocean right next to her boat. “I’m in their environment,” she said. “It’s just amazing.”
Twice, her boat was turned over in the night by large waves. The second time, she hurt her arm quite badly. Another time, she nearly ran into a ship. When her food ran out, she lived on cookies and chocolate. In the face of great hardship and loneliness, she kept going.
On February 20, 2021, she reached the island of Antigua — the end of the journey. She celebrated her arrival with a burger and fries.

Ask students to describe their brain, and they’re likely to suggest a computer, a command center, or maybe a lightning-fast communications network. But they’d be better off thinking of the brain as a muscle that gets stronger with use. Researchers now understand that IQ isn’t fixed at birth. Just as we get more physically fit from exercising, we can build brainpower through the act of learning.
Children who adopt what psychologist Carol Dweck calls a growth mindset (思維模式) understand that intelligence isn’t fixed but can be developed through effort. In Mindset, Dweck explains why students who have a growth mindset are more willing to tackle challenges, learn from failure, and see criticism as useful feedback (反饋) rather than an excuse to give up. This is the kind of thinking that keeps students motivated, even when learning is hard work.
The good news is that even the mindset isn’t fixed. A growth mindset can be learned and enhanced by messages that praise persistence and set high expectations. For example, help students understand that challenging assignments will stretch their “thinking muscles.” At the same time, provide them with necessary support so they don’t get discouraged.
It is widely believed that all brains are not equal and that context and ability influence learning. The brain connects new information to the old and can be changed by experience.
Effective teaching strategies help students move toward higher-order thinking, or what neurologists call executive (執行) function. As professor Judy Willis, MD explains, “When educators offer students chances to put their learning into practice, particularly by engaging them in genuine, personally relevant activities accompanied by formative assessments and corrective feedback throughout a unit, the facts students learn are no longer rote (死記硬背) memory. Instead, these facts become solidly integrated into an interconnected memory framework, rather than being deserted due to lack of use.”
Of course, all this brain activity is happening in a unique way for each student. By addressing learners’ individual needs, educators can help students strengthen the bonds that will lead to deeper understanding.

Technology seems to discourage slow, immersive reading. Reading on a screen, particularly a phone screen, tires your eyes and makes it harder for you to keep your place. So online writing tends to be more skimmable and list-like than print.
We shouldn’t overplay this danger. All readers skim. Skimming is the skill we acquire as children as we learn to read more skillfully. Nor is there anything new in these fears about declining attention spans, the length of time we spend concentrating on reading. So far, the anxieties have proved to be false alarms. “Quite a few critics have been worried about attention span lately and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline,” the American author Selvin Brown wrote. “No one ever said that poems were evidence of short attention spans.”
And yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. For a start, it means that there is more to read, because more people than ever are writing. And digital writing is meant for rapid release and response. An online article starts forming a comment string underneath as soon as it is published. This mode of writing and reading can be interactive and fun. But often it treats other people’s words as something to be quickly harvested as fodder to say something else. Everyone talks over the top of everyone else, desperate to be heard.
Perhaps we should slow down. Reading is constantly promoted as a social good and source of personal achievement. But this advocacy often emphasizes “enthusiastic”, “passionate” or “eager” reading, none of which adjectives suggest slow, quiet absorption.
To a slow reader, a piece of writing can only be fully understood by immersing oneself in the words and their slow comprehension of a line of thought. The slow reader is like a swimmer who stops counting the number of pool laps he has done and just enjoy s how his body feels and moves in water.
The human need for this kind of deep reading is too tenacious for any new technology to destroy. We often assume that technological change can’t be stopped and happens in one direction, so that older media like “dead-tree” books are kicked out by newer, more virtual forms. In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle and the iPad have not killed off the printed book any more than the car killed off the bicycle. We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.

Embracing AI Assistants Wisely
Recently, an increasing number of classmates in my class have resorted to AI assistants to complete study tasks, ranging from writing essays to solving math problems.
On the one hand, AI tools undeniably offer practical benefits. Take ChatGPT, for instance: it can generate instant explanations for complex concepts, saving hours of tedious research. AI can serve as a valuable learning aide, especially for tackling repetitive tasks or bridging knowledge gaps.
However, the risks of over-dependence are equally evident. Last week, a group project saw half the team copy AI-generated outlines without critical thinking, resulting in identical structures that failed to address the assignment’s unique requirements. Worse still, relying on AI to “think” for us erodes essential skills — like logical reasoning and creative problem-solving — that form the core of education.
In essence, AI should be a “study partner” rather than a “task substitute.” After all, what matters most is not the answers we get, but the minds we shape in the process.
