73-year-ord Yang Weiyun doesn’t sing, dance or sell things on Douyin (抖音). She teaches pinyin (拼音). And many of her students are adults (成年人).
Yang worked as Chinese teacher in a primary school for 30 years. Later, she went to work in a kindergarten (幼兒園) and she worked there for 20 years. About four years ago, she left the kindergarten. However, she still wanted to do something meaningful. So in May 2021, she began to teach kindergarten kids pinyin on Douyin.
However, she found that many of her students online were adults. Because they are illiterate (不識(shí)字的), they feel inferior. They feel they are not as good as the others. They are afraid to go to new places and worried that they can’t teach their children. So Yang added special classes to meet their needs.
There are over 37,0000 illiterate (文盲) adults in our country. Yang offers an easy and private (私人的) way for them to learn to read and write. Now she has nearly 300,000 students online.
Han Mei is one of Yang’s students. She grew up in the countryside and had never been to school. She moved to the city years ago. However, illiteracy made her life very hard. She couldn’t find a job. After taking Yang’s classes, she can read pinyin and knows how to write her name. She has also found a job.
Giving classes online is not an easy thing for Yang, but she tries her best to make her students learn in an easy and interesting way.

Treasure Island is a famous story. The hero, Jim Hawkins, finds Captain Flint’s map. Captain Flint was a pirate and had lots of gold. He hid his gold before he died, and there is a cross on the map to show where the gold is. It is on an island in the Caribbean Sea. Jim and his friends buy a ship, get some men and go to the island to look for the gold.
They set sail but then they discover that Long John Silver, the cook, and the other men on the ship are all pirates. The pirates are planning to kill them. As soon as they get to the island, Jim and his friends fight the pirates. The pirates do not kill them, but take the map.
The pirates go to look for the gold, and Jim follows them. Although they find the place, the gold is not there. Later, Jim knows it is because of Ben Gunn. Jim meets Ben Gunn on the island and he tells Jim and his friends his story. He tells them he was a pirate, a friend of Captain Flint. He has now decided not to be a pirate. Ben Gunn found the gold some time before. He agrees to share it with Jim and his friends because they will take him back to England.
When Jim and his friends leave the island, Ben goes with them. All of the pirates have to stay on the island except Long John Silver. Although he is also a pirate, he helps Jim and his friends. On their way home, they stop in America for one night. In the morning, they find that Long John Silver has gone, and he has taken some of the gold. When they get back to England, Jim decides never to go looking for gold again.

Slowly, Eddie pushed his bike to the finish line. Tears of disappointment (失望) filled his eyes.
Then, to his surprise, Eddie heard a sound and looked over at the crowd to see them cheering for him.
And there was his dad, with the proudest smile of all.

Choosing to see the bright side
Lily was a cheerful girl. She always had a big smile on her face. One day, she noticed an old man named Grumble sitting beside a river. The old man looked sad. Lily wanted to make him smile, so she walked up to him with a friendly greeting. “Good morning, Mr Grumble! Why the long face ” she asked.
Grumble said, “What’s there to be happy about, young one Life is full of troubles.” Lily laughed and replied, “Troubles are like big and scary thunderclouds (雷雨云), Mr Grumble. But just like clouds, they pass, making way for the sun to shine again. You should try looking on the bright side!”

For the rest of the day, Lily did all kinds of funny and silly things to make Grumble laugh. She told jokes, sang like nobody was watching, and even made faces. However, Grumble was still unhappy. Surprisingly, Grumble couldn’t help it. He let out a chuckle (咯咯笑聲), and then another. Before he knew it, he was laughing heartily, his sadness giving way to happiness.
