How do you spend your weekends For many young people, they go to the cinema with friends, have dinner out, or go shopping. This was once the routine for Zhang Yiling, a 27-year-old girl from Shanghai. But three years ago, fresh out of university and starting her first job, Zhang recognized that her idea of “relaxing weekends” nearly turned into “spending money”. If she didn’t spend money on weekends, she wouldn’t know what relaxing activities to do. Because of this, Zhang began to look for other ways to enjoy weekend life, not just shopping.
To make a change, Zhang and 26 friends built up The Lifespark Group in 2022. They started a project called “Make Your Weekend a True Break” By doing surveys, they found many surprising ways to enjoy weekends, such as dancing and exercising in a park square, joining book clubs, watching movies at home, or even becoming a model for free photos.
Zhang herself also began to pay closer attention to the interesting things around her. She found that a flower shop near her home gave free lessons on weekends. She learned about how to pick fresh flowers and grow plants. “I take care of my plants and flowers every day. I enjoy looking at them growing strong. That makes me feel relaxed.”
“I hope that our project can make more people know what they really want and how to use money in a right way,” said Zhang Yiling. “Let’s go to the library to read about different lives we never experience and visit museums to learn about history or culture. We can also spend an afternoon looking through old pictures with our family.”

2.When did Zhang and 26 friends build up The Lifespark Group
3.How did Zhang feel when she looked after her plants and flowers
4.Would you like to spend weekends like The Lifespark Group Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)

Let’s Celebrate (慶祝)
For most kids, the best thing for their birthday is having a birthday party. But thousands of children never celebrate their birthday. Thanks to Paige Chenault and her Birthday Party Project, that is changing in the U.S.A.
Every month, the Birthday Party Project holds birthday parties for the homeless kids. For some kids, it is the first birthday party they have had.
The Birthday Party Project wanted to make every kid feel special (特別的). “Everyone is special,” Paige said. So she started the Birthday Party Project in 2012 and the group’s first celebration was at a homeless shelter (避難所) in Texas.
Today, the Birthday Party Project holds about 50 monthly parties in cities around the county. Nearly 10,000 kids have celebrated their birthday. Dipson, 8, is one of those kids. He lives in a homeless shelter in Minnesota. At a party in March, he and other kids played games and ate cakes. They also opened gifts. “It was very fun.” he said.
The Birthday Party Project has held parties for years. Kids always look forward to (盼望) them. “Mary people come to the party,” Paige said. “It brings the whole place together.”
There are many ways you can help other kids feel celebrated. Join the Birthday Party Project and visit the homeless shelters. Raise (籌集) money by holding sales of old clothes and other activities. More music, please!
Albert Einstein, a famous scientist in the early 1900s, loved to play the violin. Einstein often played his violin when he had a hard time working out a difficult science problem. He believed that playing the violin helped him find answers. He thought there was more to music than just being something fun to listen to. And many scientists today agree with Einstein. They find that music has a power that’s not just for making us feel happy.
Some scientists think that playing music can help your brain (大腦) work better. When you play an instrument, you are giving your brain a workout. For example, guitar players have to do many things at once when playing music. They use their eyes to read the music, their fingers to pick at the strings, and their ears to listen to the notes that they are playing. Different parts of their bodies are working together. This helps their brains get stronger and can help them pay attention, work out problems, and remember things more easily.
You don’t have to play an instrument to feel good. Just listening to music can also make you happy. If you’re having a bad day, music can make you feel better. When you listen to your favorite music, your brain lets out something that makes you feel good. Listening to light music can also be relaxing. A soft song can help you relax when you are unhappy. For example, many people sing quiet songs to babies, because it can help them stop crying and sleep well.
Studies also show that people feel less pain (痛苦) when they are listening to music they enjoy. When people start listening to music, they pay less attention to other things. Because people are not thinking so much about the pain, they do not feel it as strongly. People have found that the more you like the music you’re hearing, the less pain you feel!
1.When did Einstein often play his violin
2.Why can playing music help your brain work better
3.What do people do to help babies stop crying and sleep well
4.When do you listen to music Why

Silent love
Along a mountain road, a handsome young man walks fast. An older man with a strict face follows him. This is from my favourite film, Postmen in the Mountains. It’s a touching (感人的) story about the love between father and son.
For years, the father served as the postman for this area. He was often absent (缺席) from home and the son seldom saw him. But now the son is taking over (接任) his father’s position. The father goes with him on his first day of work. Along the way, they start to see into each other’s hearts.
For the first time, the son carries his father across a cold river. It brings back the father’s memory of carrying the son on his back. Tears quietly run down his face.
This film shows a traditional Chinese father. He is happy about his son’s growth. But he just hides his care in his heart. He doesn’t give hugs or kisses to his son. His love may be silent. But like a mountain, it is always there.

How many times have your parents told you that you must eat your green vegetables We all know that green vegetables are healthy, but what about other foods of different colors You don’t need to like all food, but it is good for you to have different colors in your diet (飲食), for example, red food such as strawberries and tomatoes, yellow food such as bananas and pears, and orange food such as carrots and oranges. But what about the blue food
A few years ago, a food company put the color blue in its bags of sweets (甜品). Children like the color blue, so were the blue sweets popular The food company was surprised to find that they were very unpopular (不受歡迎的). Children still like red, green, brown, yellow and orange sweets.
How many blue meats or vegetables do you know There are few natural blue foods—it isn’t a common natural (天然的) food color. So, we don’t recognize blue food as something healthy or safe to eat. Maybe this is why we don’t often use blue food coloring for drinks, cakes and other food.
Some people say we eat with our eyes. The idea is that we need to like the looks of the food before we try it. I wanted to test this idea and so I asked some friends to have a very unusual lunch. My husband and I made some bread and put blue coloring in them. But nobody ate them. My guests refused (拒絕) to put the blue bread in their mouths!
So will we ever see blue food on our plates The answer seems to be “no”, at least in countries like the UK and the USA.

My name is Peter. I live in a small village. In my village, there aren’t many cars or buses, and the streets are clean. I know all the neighbours and at the end of the day, we get together and talk. We go to bed early because there isn’t much to do in the evening. There aren’t any theaters, cinemas, museums or clubs. But the children often play in the streets or in nature (自然). There is no noise, so we can hear a lot of beautiful sounds from nature like the birds singing and the rain pouring (傾瀉). In the evening, we can see lots of beautiful stars in the sky.
My pen friend Ken lives in a big city. He says there are more workplaces in the city, better schools, nicer shops, finer restaurants and lots of cinemas, theaters and museums. Children can go to clubs and parks to enjoy themselves. I went to the city to visit Ken last month. He took me to a big shopping center in the city and bought some nice gifts for my family.

Make a Difference Day
Do you know about Make a Difference Day It is a day of helping others. It began in the US in the 1990s. It is on the fourth Saturday in October, and this year it falls on 26th October. The idea behind it is to ask people to do something good for their neighbourhood. People don’t need to spend a lot of time or money on it. It’s just doing something to help make someone’s life a little better.
There are lots of ways you can make a difference to people you know or even strangers. Cooking a meal or cleaning your room can make a difference at home. You can also make a difference at school by being kind to someone in the playground or helping your classmates with their lessons. What’s more, you can make a difference for your neighbourhood by giving your unwanted books, clothes or toys to those who need them or by taking part in a litter pick.
“Last year in primary school, I helped out in a Grade One class every week. I helped the pupils with their work. I also read with them. It gave them someone-on-one help, and they grew in confidence talking with older children. I enjoyed working with them and helping with their learning journey at school.” Rapha, an 11-year-old boy, shares his story.
Maria Evans, a middle school teacher, says it’s important to do something nice for another person because it can make the kindness pass from one person to another. “The things you did show them they are important. You may get closer to others. Your kindness might let them help others too.”
When you do something nice for someone else, you’re showing yourself that you can make a positive (積極的) change for others. You feel able to make a real difference. It is important when life sometimes seems difficult.
