遷移應用—過閱讀關
(說明:文中加藍詞匯為本單元主題詞匯)
(2024·全國甲卷·閱讀理解D篇)“I didn't like the ending,” I said to my favorite college professor. It was my junior year of undergraduate, and I was doing an independent study on Victorian literature. I had just finished reading The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, and I was heartbroken with the ending. Prof. Gracie, with all his patience, asked me to think about it beyond whether I liked it or not. He suggested I think about the difference between endings that I
wanted for the characters and endings that were right for the characters, endings that satisfied the story even if they didn't have a traditionally positive outcome. Of course, I would have preferred a different ending for Tom and Maggie Tulliver, but the ending they got did make the most sense for them.
This was an aha moment for me, and I never thought about endings the same way again. From then on, if I wanted to read an ending guaranteed to be happy, I'd pick up a love romance. If I wanted an ending I couldn't guess, I'd pick up a mystery (懸疑小說). One where I kind of knew what was going to happen, historical fiction. Choosing what to read became easier.
But writing the end — that's hard. It's hard for writers because endings carry so much weight with readers. You have to balance creating an ending that's unpredictable, but doesn't seem to come from nowhere, one that fits what's right for the characters.
That's why this issue (期) of Writer's Digest aims to help you figure out how to write the best ending for whatever kind of writing you're doing. If it's short stories, Peter Mountford breaks down six techniques you can try to see which one helps you stick the landing. Elizabeth Sims analyzes the final chapters of five great novels to see what key points they include and how you can adapt them for your work.
This issue won't tell you what your ending should be — that's up to you and the story you're telling — but it might provide what you need to get there.

(2025·聊城模擬)It wasn't until I got into college and took a class on creative writing that I began to trust my own madness. The professor encouraged us to color outside the lines and trust our abilities as a writer. We had weekly sessions where we read each other's work and had to give constructive criticism.
On our first assignment, I struggled with getting my ideas onto paper.I knew that kind of story I wanted to tell, but as a reserved young man, I was terrified of judgement from my peers.I was afraid they would think my writing was too dark or really messed up.But finally, after spending hours thinking of making the writing more socially acceptable, I decided to write it like I felt it.
In the next critique session, I was shocked at the reaction from my peers. There was some constructive criticism, which really helped me improve, but overall, they loved how realistic and convincing my writing was.At the end of the class, the professor asked me if she could use my assignment as a sample for her other classes to know that they can trust their own madness with their writing.
For the final we had a huge paper for which we had to write on Henry Ⅴ.The professor encouraged me to write it in the voice I had developed in the creative writing class, so I did.The consequence was that she called it a graduate level paper and asked to use it as another sample.
That year I ended up winning a writing award.I also entered a writing contest online and out of hundreds of entries, got an honorable mention. And that was when I decided to have a shot at fiction.

(2025·杭州模擬)Ecologist Carl Safina's latest book focuses on the chimpanzees, the sperm whale and the scarlet macaw. In Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Achieve Peace, he writes about culture, the structures of societies, and what makes us who and what we are.
Safina's three animals are selected for their variety.Safina warns against thinking about chimpanzees in purely human terms.“We see in them partially formed premiumans caught between being and becoming, a forerunner of humankind,” Safina writes, noting, “Chimpanzees are not our ancestors.Chimps are our contemporaries. They are complete chimpanzees, not half-baked humans.”
The main reason for this warning is also one of the central attempts of Becoming Wild: criticize the idea of human exceptionalism. For centuries, scientists and philosophers have fixed that exceptionalism on one thing after another: Humans are the only animals that have language, humans are the only animals that make tools, etc. These have all boiled down to the same idea that only humans have culture.
Safina's book shows that nothing could be further from the truth.Human beings have only recently begun to recognize the animal cultures around them.“Humans use language so much that it has swamped our own ability to recognize non-verbal signals that we ourselves continually display and respond to,” Safina writes.“The world is full of layers and waves of communication.”
Becoming Wild describes communication of all kinds.Sperm whales include each other in sonic webs full of vocabulary and even regional dialects. They find meaning in family and group identity by living in stable groups where individuals stay together for decades.Only in sperm whales and humans do group identities extend so far beyond relatives.Like whales, young scarlet macaws closely follow cultural practices. They spend years learning tool-fashioning and developing unique calls learned from their parents. They also learn
dialects to enhance group identity.Chimpanzees mirror all the interpersonal complexity of humans.A huge part of chimpanzee life is learning how to make peace through forgiveness.

Embracing the Magic of Print Media
As the digital revolution sweeps through our lives, the appeal of screens and the convenience of online content have quietly caused print media to lose its charm.Peeking into our library, we'll see newspapers gathering dust, like long-forgotten friends.
However, print media offers a unique reading experience. It encourages a slower and more reflective reading process, allowing readers to digest information more thoroughly.Besides, it endows readers with the feel of the pages, the ink smell, and the freedom to flip through pages at our own pace, which offers us an escape into another world and a deeper dive into knowledge.
So, let's bring back the joy of turning pages! Together, we can foster a culture of curiosity and lifelong learning that surpasses digital screens.

[5] The contest was being held in the local community hall.On the day of the contest, the hall was crowded. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates.I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. He suggested I think about the difference between endings that I wanted for the characters and endings that were right for the characters, endings that satisfied the story even if they didn't have a traditionally positive outcome.

[1] Having held the inter school storytelling championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice.Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
[2] Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly be the champion again. Consequently, I became confident.I was so proud that I neglected the importance of practicing for the contest.
[3] A week before the contest, my teacher Ms Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to perform for the contest?” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was.“Just imagine you are on the stage in the presence of the audience,” she added.“I'm sorry, Ms Sara,” I replied.“I have a bit of a sore throat.”
[4] This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class.I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I even told Ms Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest. In fact, I did everything but practice my text.I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too confident to practice and expected everything to be fine.
[5] The contest was being held in the local community hall.On the day of the contest, the hall was crowded. My school teachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates.I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.

They are complete chimpanzees, not half baked humans.”
Safina's book shows that nothing could be further from the truth.Human beings have only recently begun to recognize the animal cultures around them.“Humans use language so much that it has swamped our own ability to recognize non verbal signals that we ourselves continually display and respond to,” Safina writes.“The world is full of layers and waves of communication.”
They spend years learning tool fashioning and developing unique calls learned from their parents. They also learn dialects to enhance group identity.Chimpanzees mirror all the interpersonal complexity of humans.A huge part of chimpanzee life is learning how to make peace through forgiveness.
5.What does Safina think about chimpanzees
A.They are human beings' ancestors.
B.They are randomly chosen for study.
C.They are species independent of humans.
D.They are the symbol of being and becoming.
6.What is an attempt of Becoming Wild
A.To prove an assumption.
B.To challenge a belief.
C.To present a fact.
D.To evaluate a statement.
7.What does the underlined word “swamped” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Indicated. B.Measured.
C.Tested. D.Weakened.
8.What is mainly presented in Becoming Wild
A.The existence of animal culture.
