petroleum well (油升) in California in the1860s.
Compass
The Chinese considered south their cardinal direction, and the
original compass was created by the Chinese. The ancient Chinese

Have you ever felt nervous about trying something for the first time It's the same for
everyone, and overcoming fears and taking healthy risks can open up new
experiences.
Step out of your comfort zone(舒適區(qū))
Summer is a great time to try something new, like learning a skill or
making new friends. It can feel exciting but scary, because doing something
new means taking a risk that it won't work out. Scientists say feeling
nervous is our body dealing with danger, it frees chemicals that make the
heart race. However, Catherine Hayes Fisher from the mental health charity
Place2Be tells The Week Junior not to let it stop you. "Not loving something at first doesn't mean
you've made a terrible mistake to try it," she says." It's part of growth."
Have a go anyway
Feeling the fear but having a go anyway is a great way to increase your confidence and this
gives you the strength to overcome challenges, get over from difficult experiences and stay strong
inside. It also means making the most of exciting opportunities. Think of a time you took a risk
and it paid off, like joining a team and scoring a goal or talking to someone next to you and
making a new friend. Then think what you would miss out on if you'd let fear get in the way.
However, not all risks are good ideas. So if you're unsure about anything, ask a trusted adult first.
Manage your worries
How you deal with a challenge is important, says Hayes Fisher. So be kind and tell yourself," I
don't know how to do this yet, I'm going to make mistakes, but it'll be fun working it out." She
also warns about the "spotlight effect", explaining," It's easy to feel that everybody is watching
when we're in a new situation." But remember that most people are probably busy worrying about
what they're doing. Everyone overcomes fear differently, so find what works for you. You could
try belly breathing or talking to someone about your feelings.
23. According to scientists, why do we feel nervous when trying new things
A. Because we are in bad health.
B. Because our body is facing possible danger.
C. Because we are not smart enough to learn quickly.
D. Because summer weather makes people uncomfortable.
24. What does Catherine Hayes Fisher tell us about trying new things
A. It's a great way to increase your confidence.
B. We should only try things we know we’ll love.
C. It’s normal not to enjoy something immediately.
D. Not enjoying something at first means we made a mistake.
25.What does the underlined expression “spotlight effect” refer to in the last paragraph
A. trusting adults to help you shine.
B. using bright lights to reduce fear.
C. thinking everyone is watching you.
D. focusing only on your own feelings.
26. What is the main purpose of the article
A. To explain why summer is the best season.
B. To encourage people to avoid taking risks.
C. To describe how chemicals influence our bodies.
D. To teach ways to build confidence through trying new things.

①China is making big efforts to help people control their weight and live healthier lives.
The government has started a three-year "Weight Management Year” plan from 2024 to 2027 to
fight against being too heavy. Being too heavy can cause serious health problems like sugar
sickness and heart disease. Here's what you should know about the new guidelines(準則).
②First, it's important to check your BMI (體重指數). For adults, a healthy BMI is between
18.5 and 24. If your BMI is between 24 and 28, you are overweight. A BMI of 28 or more means
you are extremely overweight. Also, doctors suggest measuring your waist(腰圍 ). Men should
keep their waist under 90 cm, and women under 85 cm.
③When it comes to food, choose whole grains like brown rice, fresh vegetables, and good
proteins such as fish, chicken, or beans. Avoid fried foods and sugary snacks, and also eat less salt
and oil. Interestingly, the guidelines even include fun local dishes - like “stewed fish” from
Northeast China or “noodles with chili oil” from the Northwest - to make healthy eating delicious
and full of local taste.
④For exercise, try to do 150 - 300 minutes of light activities like walking, cycling, or
dancing every week, and do strength exercises twice a week. If you sit for a long time while
studying, stand up and move your body for 3-5 minutes every hour.
⑤Besides diet and exercise, small daily habits can also make a big difference. Young people
should sleep 7 hours every night because bad sleep can make you put on weight. Try to eat
vegetables first, then meat, and finally rice or bread during a meal to control how much you eat.
⑥Schools and communities are also helping. For example, schools in Shanghai now make
sure students exercise for at least two hours every day, and hospitals have healthy weight help
centers with diet plans, exercise advice, and even some traditional Chinese ways. By 2030, China
hopes to stop the problem of being too heavy from getting worse through education and support.
⑦Remember, losing weight isn't about being perfect ---- just start with small changes, like
drinking water instead of sweet drinks or taking the stairs instead of the lift. With these easy steps,
everyone can have a healthier future.
27. According to the guidelines, who is considered to be healthy
A. Marry, whose BMI is below 18.5
B. Tony, who has a BMI of 23
C. Linda, her waist measures 89cm
D. Tom, his waist measures 95cm
28. Which eating habit is NOT suggested in the text
A. Eating fried chicken often
B. Eating fresh vegetables often
C. Choosing brown rice and fish
D. Trying Northwest China's noodles with chili oil
29. Which way is mentioned to support weight management
A. Providing free sugary snacks in schools
B. Encouraging students to eat more fried food
C. Reducing daily sleeping hours for young people
D. Setting up healthy weight help centers in hospitals
30. What’s the right structure of the passage
A. ① / ②③④⑤⑥ / ⑦
B. ① / ②③④⑤⑥⑦
C. ①②③④⑤⑥ / ⑦
D. ① / ②③④⑤ / ⑥⑦

Hello! I'm Judy, a 14-year-old girl from Canada.
When I was young, my mom always told me,“Helping others makes the world better.” Her
words remained strong in my mind.
At the age of seven, I started a project called “Art for Kindness”. I collected colored pencils
and notebooks. Then, I gave them to children in poor areas. Two years later, I started my business.
I got the idea from helping my best friend Emma. One day, Emma was very sad.To cheer her up, I
made a card with encouraging words “You Are Amazing!” for her. When she smiled, I realized,
Simple kindness can change someone’s day and I want to be everyone’s positive friend.
Now, I create special Schoolbags and notebooks. On them, you can see words like “Believe
yourself” and “Never Give Up”. We use part of the money to help people in need. We also have
free art classes for kids. In the classes, they can learn painting and share their stories.

Long-termism (長期主義)
After listening to the story of Wang Xingxing, I believe long-termism is the secret to success.
The key to success is to set a clear goal and focus on it patiently. What makes long-termism
special is that it requires us to stick to the goal no matter how difficult it is. Last year, I decided to
improve my math scores. The truth is that I spent two hours practicing math every day. Though
progress was slow at first, I never gave up and finally got 95 scores, which encourage me a lot.
To be honest, only after six months of hard work could I achieve this. Like Wang Xingxing, I
learned that keeping a goal in mind leads to success. (Word count: 120)
Teamwork (團隊精神)
After listening to the story of Wang Xingxing, I believe teamwork is the secret to success.
Good teamwork means we share ideas openly and communicate effectively. What a
successful team needs is members who are willing to work hard together. Last month, our class
prepared for an English drama competition. The most important thing was that we listened to each
other's suggestions. Not only did we practice for three hours daily, but we also helped weaker
classmates. Our teacher, who encouraged us constantly, said our unity was the key. Finally, we
won first prize! This proves that teamwork can make dreams come true.
