Peter, a 15 year old boy, showed such great interest in seashells that he would rush to pick them up with his 13 year old sister, Shirley. She screamed out with joy as Peter put his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, the seashells lay shining on the peaceful beach, just waiting for him, like stars twinkling in the sky. When waves touched them, they seemed like flowers blooming in a gentle wind.

(2021·全國甲卷· 閱讀理解C篇)When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow, London on a gray January morning.Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me.Without my beloved beaches and endless blue sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place.Until I made a discovery.
Southbank, at an eastern bend in the Thames, is the center of British skateboarding, where the continuous crashing of skateboards left your head ringing.I loved it.I soon made friends with the local skaters. We spoke our own language. And my favorite: Safe.Safe meant cool.It meant hello. It meant don't worry about it.Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam (橫桿),I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man.Safe.A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting:“Safe!_Safe!_Safe!” And that's what mattered — landing tricks, being a good skater.
When I was 15, my family moved to Washington.I tried skateboarding there, but the locals were far less welcoming.Within a couple of years, I'd given it up.
When I returned to London in 2004, I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there.I've traveled back several times since, most recently this past spring. The day was cold but clear; tourists and Londoners stopped to watch the skaters.Weaving (穿梭) among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my way to the beam. Then a rail thin teenager, in a baggy white T shirt, skidded (滑) up to the beam.He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him.But soon I caught a few of his glances.“I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head.“Safe, man.Safe.”
“Yeah,” I said.“Safe.”

根據第一段倒數第二句“Without my beloved beaches and endless blue?sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place.” 分析四個選項可知,A項中的disappointed(沮喪的)準確描述了作者的心情。故選A項。
根據第二段最后一句“And that's what mattered — landing tricks, being a good skater.” 再根據上句中的“when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting ...”
根據第四段中的“I found myself wandering down to Southbank, spending hours there. I've traveled back several times since ...Weaving (穿梭) among the kids who rushed by on their boards, I found my way to the beam”可知,作者在回到倫敦后,花了數小時在Southbank漫步,并且去了多次,穿梭于玩滑板的孩子之間,回憶起自己的過往。

Peter, a 15-year-old boy, showed such great interest in seashells that he would rush to pick them up with his 13-year-old sister, Shirley. She screamed out with joy as Peter put his treasure into his pockets. For Peter, the seashells lay shining on the peaceful beach, just waiting for him, like stars twinkling in the sky. When waves touched them, they seemed like flowers blooming in a gentle wind.
“like stars twinkling in the sky”“they seemed like flowers blooming in a gentle wind”使用了明喻的修辭手法,將貝殼比作天空中閃爍的星星和微風中綻放的花朵,生動地描述了貝殼的美麗,暗示了彼得對貝殼的喜歡。

(2021·全國甲卷· 閱讀理解C篇)When I was 9, we packed up our home in Los Angeles and arrived at Heathrow, London on a gray January morning.Everyone in the family settled quickly into the city except me.Without my beloved beaches and endless blue-sky days, I felt at a loss and out of place.Until I made a discovery.
It meant don't worry about it.Once, when trying a certain trick on the beam (橫桿),I fell onto the stones, damaging a nerve in my hand, and Toby came over, helping me up: Safe, man.Safe.A few minutes later, when I landed the trick, my friends beat their boards loud, shouting:“Safe! Safe! Safe!” And that's what mattered — landing tricks, being a good skater.
Then a rail-thin teenager, in a baggy white T-shirt, skidded (滑) up to the beam.He sat next to me. He seemed not to notice the man next to him.But soon I caught a few of his glances.“I was a local here 20 years ago,” I told him. Then, slowly, he began to nod his head.“Safe, man.Safe.”
“Yeah,” I said.“Safe.”

(2025·雅安多校聯考)If you feel that making friends as a kid is easy, you're right. “They have a break between lessons and gym classes. They can let their guard down,” says Marisa G.Franco, a sought-after friendship & belonging expert. However, it's not the case for adults.Even though they see their colleagues every day, they still find it never easy to be friends with them.
In the US, for example, a 2021 survey by the American Enterprise Institute, found that the number of adults who said they had no close friends had increased four times since 1990, going from 3 percent to 12 percent.“We've never been more disconnected,”says psychologist and author Jody Carrington.Although adults spend time together from 9: 00 a.m. to 6: 00 p.m. and even late into the night, the fast-paced work pattern dictates that communication is limited to the content of the work, and after work, they immediately go back to homes, leaving no extra energy to have unplanned interactions to develop further friendship.
Research by Brigham Young University psychologist Julianne Holt-Lunstad has shown that loneliness is a major threat to longevity (長壽), same as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or being an alcoholic.People who are lonely or socially cut off have a higher risk of having diseases like depression, dementia and cardiac death. On the another side, healthy friendships can help us a lot, doing better with stress and living happier and longer.Plus, happiness is contagious. Harvard researchers found that when an individual becomes happy, his or her friends who live in a 1.6-kilometre radius have a 25 percent higher chance of getting a boost in happiness, too.
Hence, making and deepening friendships matters more than we imagine. You might think making friends is an inherent skill that doesn't need to be taught. It's not the case.We can all get better at connection if we try. Some experts offer some tricks to make finding connection a little easier.

(2025·蕪湖模擬)Any good recipe needs an ingredient list, a cooking method, and if it's particularly successful, there will be a personal touch describing how the recipe was developed through repeated tests until it was just right. It is a balance of these elements in recipes that ensures good cookbooks are the most important part of any kitchen.
Good communication is just like making a good dish. This is where The Art of Explanation: How to Communicate with Clarity and Confidence steps in.Written by journalist Ros Atkins, it is a recipe book for storytelling, made to be roughly looked through. The “ingredient list” is information required to communicate effectively. The methodology is given according to the different settings.
In this book, Atkins presents a seven-step method for giving a great explanation, from getting the main information to giving information in an easy-to-understand way.Reviewing a book of this nature is a test of how well I have understood the information in this guide. The most important parts of the method include: gathering information effectively; communicating it clearly; and achieving the delivery. But, for me, it is not this method that makes this book interesting but the “personal touch” stories, which draw on Atkins' life, that give this book its edge.
I was most drawn to the practical examples in The Art of Explanation, because it offered a chance to know more about Atkins' career, from starting out as a graduate to taking a new approach to explanation on a program, Outside Source. As Atkins puts it himself, “Tell a good story, so people will pay attention to your every word.” Stories, and how they are told, are at the heart of journalism. It is no surprise that the stories told in the book are particularly attractive, such as how Atkins began his journalism career as a junior reporter in South Africa. These stories make The Art of Explanation worth reading, moving it from a textbook to something that works like a well-written cookbook.

Be your real self.
You can't go wrong with being yourself.Pretending to be someone you aren't can lead your relationships to be built on lies and cause confusion in the future. 10 They forget that being themselves is how they make genuine connections.
Respect people's boundaries.
It's likely that when you get to know someone new, you'll discover their limits quickly. In order to build a meaningful relationship with that person, you must respect the boundaries. 11 Otherwise, the connection will be killed.
Move past the surface level.
Meaningful connections move past the basics of small talk.Yes, the first time you meet someone, you can cover surface-level facts. 12 What are their values What types of goals do they have for the future What are their biggest hopes and dreams These are all questions that give more insight into who they are and how we can connect with them.
13
One of the best ways to learn how to connect with other people is learning to be present. And don't just be present mentally.Use your body language to show that they have your full attention. If you aren't facing the person who's speaking, they won't feel like you care about connecting with them.
A.Stay focused on the present.
B.Be genuine with your admiration.
C.Building relationships can be tough.
D.Don't push them to share things that they don't want to.
E.It can also reduce stress and awkwardness for both of you.

[1] Mary's husband died a few years ago from an accident. To make ends meet, she had to take on several jobs and bring up her five children alone.Fortunately, her oldest children understood her and helped to look after the younger kids.Mary always felt terrible about that, but there was nothing she could do.She dreamed of having a second hand truck to transport goods for others so that she could have another source of income.
[2] Mornings, Mary cleaned the houses for some families, and did a part time job at a supermarket the rest of the afternoon. At night, she worked at a gas station's convenience store.Every night, she came home tired, and most of the kids had been asleep by then.

(2025·雅安多校聯考)If you feel that making friends as a kid is easy, you're right. “They have a break between lessons and gym classes. They can let their guard down,” says Marisa G.Franco, a sought after friendship & belonging expert. However, it's not the case for adults.Even though they see their colleagues every day, they still find it never easy to be friends with them.
In the US, for example, a 2021 survey by the American Enterprise Institute, found that the number of adults who said they had no close friends had increased four times since 1990, going from 3 percent to 12 percent.“We've never been more disconnected,”says psychologist and author Jody Carrington.Although adults spend time together from 9: 00 a.m. to 6: 00 p.m. and even late into the night, the fast paced work pattern dictates that communication is limited to the content of the work, and after work, they immediately go back to homes, leaving no extra energy to have unplanned interactions to develop further friendship.
Research by Brigham Young University psychologist Julianne Holt Lunstad has shown that loneliness is a major threat to longevity (長壽), same as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or being an alcoholic.People who are lonely or socially cut off have a higher risk of having diseases like depression, dementia and cardiac death. On the another side, healthy friendships can help us a lot, doing better with stress and living happier and longer.Plus, happiness is contagious.Harvard researchers found that when an individual becomes happy, his or her friends who live in a 1.6 kilometre radius have a 25 percent higher chance of getting a boost in happiness, too.

In this book, Atkins presents a seven step method for giving a great explanation, from getting the main information to giving information in an easy to understand way.Reviewing a book of this nature is a test of how well I have understood the information in this guide.
These stories make The Art of Explanation worth reading, moving it from a textbook to something that works like a well written cookbook.
5.Why does the author mention recipes in the first paragraph
A.To explain what a good recipe should be like.
B.To compare them to effective communication.
C.To encourage readers to make dishes themselves.
D.To stress the importance of the personal touch in a book.
6.What makes The Art of Explanation interesting
A.The ingredient list.
B.The seven step method.
C.The personal stories of Atkins.
D.The way to deliver the message.
7.What does the author think of the book
A.It should be read word for word.
B.It is written in an easy to understand way.
C.The method introduced in the book is boring.
D.The way that it tells stories is quite worth learning.
8.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A.Education. B.Health.
C.Entertainment. D.Science.
