As a head football coach, I built a team at Long Beach City College and had success in Division I, the highest level of college sports. Playing in the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) was my final goal.
It took five tough years before we made it to the WCWS in 2000, then took down UCLA, our competitor, to win the title. My dream had come true sooner than I’d expected. But one championship wasn’t enough.
That year and then several more went by but we didn’t win another national championship. I worried that the WCWS might never happen again for our team. I drove our players — and myself — harder and harder. After a frustrating practice during the 2010 season, I went home and threw myself on my bed. I broke down and thought I wasn’t succeeding as a coach because I wasn’t winning.
Then I thought about how my mom had “coached” me. By being present, giving me her full attention even when she was worried about feeding us when her salary (薪水) ran out. That’s what I could do for our players. Show them that I valued them beyond what they did on the field.
I started taking them out to eat, to get to know them one-on-one. I promised them that I would be there for them if they were ever facing a personal problem. In turn, our athletes shared challenges they met with me.
All of us became closer. We grew as a team. In the years since I changed the way I coached, I’ve had a lot of breakfasts with the athletes. Our team has won six more WCWS titles — seven in all. I’m proud to see my players following their dreams. Also, I have learned the joy of coaching players.
24. What does the underlined phrase “took down” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Recognize. B. Face. C. Beat. D. Recommend.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A. The training of the players. B. The devotion of the players.
C. The coaching experience of the author. D. The struggle of the author during the dark time.
26. What change did I make in my later coaching years
A. I stopped forcing my athletes to train.
B. I made a lot of promises to my athletes.
C. I tried to build close relationship with my athletes.
D. I focused on solving my athletes’ all kinds of problems.
27. What does the author’s story tell us
A. Team spirit is unnecessary. B. Winning is everything for a coach.
C. The result should be highly thought of. D. Winning is meaningful when it isn’t everything.

The novel — a world contained within pages, a playground for words and ideas. With our daily lives ruled by screens, reading a good novel is a great escape and a smart choice for many to kill time. But what exactly is a novel
A novel is an invented work of prose (散文) that puts together characters, plots (情節), and settings to create a narrative (記敘的) world, centering on a specific theme or element of the human experience.
The word “novel” comes from the Italian term novella, which originally meant “new” or “news” and referred to short, new stories. Over time, these stories developed into longer, more complex narratives, leading to the modern novel. Though storytelling has ancient roots, the novel as we know began to take shape in the 17th and 18th centuries, with authors such as Miguel de Cervantes (Don Quixote) and Daniel Defoe (Robinson Crusoe) pioneering the form.
Often, style and length are the two key factors that set novels apart from other literary works. While short stories can be read in a single time, novels are much longer narratives in chapters or parts, needing more time. Due to their length, novels deliver a wider and more detailed exploration of stories, emotions, and ideas.
The unique style of novels comes from prose — a natural flow of language that copies everyday speech. Unlike verse (詩句) which depends on strict structures, prose is more flexible in sentence structure and length. This allows novels to look deeply into character development, dialogue, and narrative complexity.
There are several basic elements of great novels, which are important to know if you are thinking about writing your own novel. Let’s explore each one in detail.
28. Which of the following is a novel
A. An article describing a beautiful place.
B. A long story telling a boy’s adventure on an island.
C. A report recording a historical moment in the world.
D. An essay explaining the differences between two cultures.
29. What did the word “novel” originally refer to
A. Short and new stories. B. Unique and strict verse.
C. Modern and popular songs. D. Specific and sad experience.
30. How is the novel different from verse according to the text
A. It is larger in using vocabulary. B. It is richer in expressing emotions.
C. It is more popular among young people. D. It is freer in sentence structure and length.
31. What might the author continue talking about
A. Strict structures of great verse. B. Deep exploration of short stories.
C. Important elements of great novels. D. Famous novel authors of different times.
D
You forget to bring your water bottle to the airport, so you buy a plastic one and keep refilling it. Or you order takeout for dinner and save the black plastic container to pack your lunch the next day. Reuse is one of the core rules of sustainability (可持續性). But should you be reusing these single-use plastics Experts say no.
Single-use plastics leach (濾出) chemicals and shed (釋放) microplastics into your environment. Though studies have not directly compared single-use and reusable plastic, experts say they are more concerned about single-use plastics because of how they’re made. A single-use plastic water bottle sheds micro-and nanoplastics into your water when you refill it, and a takeout container or frozen meal tray sheds these particles into your food. Chemical exposure increases if plastic is heated, typically in a microwave, a dishwasher or even by placing hot food in a takeout container. When heat is applied, molecules move faster, meaning it could be easier for some of these particles to make its way into your food.
The danger of heating your plastic also applies to reusable plastic, like baby bottles and plastic storage containers, according to Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics. Research found that black plastic in sushi trays, and other objects contain high levels of flame retardants (延緩劑). These poisonous chemicals have been linked to physical and mental problems.
Concerns with chemicals and microplastics primarily apply to food, experts said, because you are swallowing them. Reusing single-use plastics like grocery bags is not a major concern, they added. The most important thing you should do is avoid subjecting your plastic to heat, experts agreed. “A pretty hard-and-fast rule is to never microwave plastic,” Enck said. “And there’s also a recommendation not to put plastic into the dishwasher if it’s on a hot cycle.”
If you order takeout, it’s best to transfer the food to a nonplastic dish as soon as possible, and you should use a plate when microwaving your food.
32. Why does the author list examples in the first paragraph
A. To lead in the topic. B. To prove the experts’ opinion.
C. To analyse the reason. D. To introduce background information.
33. What can we learn from the research
A. Plastic bottles of good quality is encouraged to use.
B. It is the chemicals in the materials that cause trouble.
C. High temperature makes little difference to takeout food.
D. Reusable plastic is more dangerous than single-use plastic.
34. Which situation poses the biggest threat to human’s health
A. Heating fast food in a glass bowl. B. Filling the grocery bag with meat.
C. Packing cold drink with single-use plastics. D. Ordering hot soup contained in a plastic bag.
35. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Stop Using Single-use Plastics B. Reusing Single-use Plastics Is Harmful
C. How to Correctly Use Single-use Plastics D. The Astonishing Fact of Single-use Plastics
第二節(共5小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分)
閱讀下面短文,從短文后的選項中選出可以填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。
With each book you read, your mind expands, your vocabulary grows, and your imagination gets a good exercise. But many people find themselves reading fewer books than they want. ____36____
Keep a book on you.
One of the best ways to make sure you’re reading as much as possible is to have a book on you at most (or all!) times. ____37____ Maybe it’s while you wait in line to get a coffee. Or while you wait for your bus. Basically, any time you would pull your phone out and scroll, you can pull your book out and read it.
____38____
How much you should read a day is up to you, but giving yourself a small daily goal will help you keep your reading habit, especially during busier days. I suggest a sweet-spot of 20minutes per day. Sure, if you are able to read more during a day, just go for it.
Don’t be afraid to quit.
It happens to most of us. We pick up a book with the intention of finishing it in no time, but the story is just not for us. The main character may be unlikable. ____39____ Whatever the reason, we just don’t want to keep reading it. And that’s okay. When you just aren’t into a book, you should 100% quit reading it.
Find a reading community.
____40____ They allow you a space to dive deeper into what you’re reading about. Finding a reading community is easier than you think. Aside from the countless reading groups on the internet, many local bookstores and libraries host book clubs of their own. It’s really nice to meet people who enjoy the same hobbies as you.
A. Set a daily goal.
B. Read as much as possible.
C. It’s of great importance to choose a good book.
D. Here are a few tips to help you read more books.
E. Or the language may be too difficult to understand.
F. There are many occasions when you have the opportunity to read.
G. Things like book clubs are a great way to encourage you to keep reading.

第二節(滿分25分)
閱讀下面材料,根據其內容和所給段落開頭語續寫兩段,使之構成一篇完整的短文。
I checked my watch, 8:45 P. M. It looked as if the books I’d ordered from Amazon weren’t going to get here tonight. It was a pity that I couldn’t kill time by reading after my dog died a week earlier.
My life felt so empty, and nothing was the same without him. Food didn’t taste as good. TV shows weren’t entertaining. Music, my greatest passion, didn’t move me the way it used to. My beloved piano sat untouched in the corner of the living room. It was probably as lonely as I was.
Even worse, the friends who had checked in on me so often at first came around less. The only thing I had to look forward to was Amazon deliveries which offered me a few moments of human communication with the drivers.
Unexpectedly, the door bell rang. I went to the door. There was my Amazon package, but the delivery person had left. Seeing the delivery car out there, I walked quickly towards it. The driver, a woman, had two kids with her. I gave them a friendly wave, and the passenger window slid down. “Thank you!” I said. “You’re welcome,” the driver said, her voice full of cheer. “Have a good night!”
That wasn’t what I expected from a stranger. I was deeply moved and walked over to the car. “I’m Dave,” I said. “I’m Shontia,” the driver said. “And these are my two daughters, Mariyah and Maddie.”
I didn’t know what came over me, but I spoke out, “My beloved dog passed away a week ago. I had been living alone with him more than ten years.” Shontia’s smile faded. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “Is there anything I can do for you ”
“Are you in a hurry ” I asked. “If you don’t have somewhere else to be, I’d like you and your girls to come inside. I was a music teacher. I’d like to play something for you.” “We have time,” Shontia said. They got out of the car.
注意:1. 續寫詞數應為150左右;
2. 請按如下格式在答題卡的相應位置作答。

第一節(滿分15分)
The traditional Chinese festival I like best
Good morning! My name is Li Hua. It’s my great honour to be here and to share with you the traditional Chinese festival I like best. There are many traditional festivals in China, but the one I like best is the Spring Festival, which marks the beginning of the lunar new year.
I love the Spring Festival so much that it has become a highlight of my year. One of the most impressive things is the family reunion, which explains why people travel long distances to be with their loved ones. The atmosphere is filled with joy and warmth, with families gathering to enjoy delicious feasts, exchange gifts, and watch the annual Spring Festival Gala on TV.
The Spring Festival is not just a celebration; it is a time when we strengthen our bonds with family and friends, and embrace the rich cultural heritage of China. This festival brings so much happiness, which makes it truly special to me.
So much for my speech. Thank you for your listening!
第二節(滿分25分)
【答案】
I warmly led their way to my house. As we entered, the girls’ eyes widened with excitement at the sight of my piano. I sat down on the bench and played a melancholic yet soothing piece, “Moonlight Sonata”, pouring my heart and soul into every note. The music seemed to heal the wound in my heart, and I could see the girls’ faces light up with wonder. Shontia listened quietly, tears welling up in her eyes. When I finished, there was a moment of silence, and then the girls clapped enthusiastically. “That was beautiful!” Mariyah exclaimed. “Can you teach me how to play ” she asked eagerly. I smiled and nodded, feeling a sense of purpose for the first time since my dog’s passing.
Next day, they brought me a surprise gift in return for my piano teaching. It was a small, handmade plaque with the words “Thank You for Sharing Your Music” engraved on it. Along with it was a bouquet of fresh flowers, their vibrant colors bringing a touch of life to my otherwise dull living room. “We wanted to show our appreciation,” Shontia said, her voice filled with gratitude. “Your music has touched us deeply.” I was deeply touched by their kindness and generosity. From that day on, our friendship grew stronger, and I found joy in teaching Mariyah and Maddie how to play the piano. My life, once filled with emptiness, was now filled with music, laughter, and the warmth of newfound friendships.
