They’re becoming more removed from the professionals on the ground who are covering current events, interviewing sources, fact-checking, photographing and editing. And with mis-and-disinformation, generative artificial intelligence and distrust in traditional media all on the rise, we believe it is more crucial than ever to help young people understand how journalism works and why it is important. How the 14-Day Cycle Will Work·Day 1: The Learning Network publishes a link to a Times article, along with a few open-ended discussion questions and guidelines for participating.·Days 2-8: Students post their initial reactions and questions in the Learning Network comments section.·Days 9-13: The journalist responds to students in the comments section using the “reporter reply” feature so that readers can easily see the response. Students then continue replying to both the journalist and to other students.·Days 13-14: The journalist shares a brief reflection about the experience of conversing with students about the article.Let Us Know What You ThinkIf you have a question or comment, post it here and we’ll respond to you.21. People who offer this kind of service are known as “pet sitters”.Cao Ting, 27, is a pet sitter from Chengdu, who has been working in the pet industry for two years. “I offer services like feeding, bathing, walking dogs, playing with the pets, and other things as requested by the owners, ” said Cao.Cao normally needs to take care of a pet for 40 minutes to an hour for one pet-sitting period. The cost of her service is related to many things such as the kind of pet, distance traveled and lasting time of care. Generally, it is from 50 to 70 yuan per session. Pet owners can contact Cao through pet care websites and different social medias, like Xiaohongshu, Xianyu and Douyin.Cao acquires professional pet care skills through various methods, including attending online or offline pet care training courses, learning from other pet sitters and getting experience through practice. While caring for pets, Cao realized how unique each pet is and how important it is to deeply understand the pets' behaviors to develop safe, comfortable relationships with them. But being a pet-sitter isn't always easy. In-home pet care means pet sitters will enter other people's houses when they are away, which may raise worries about property security. “Before starting the pet-sitting, I will ask the owner to lock away their valuable things and even set up cameras for further security, ” said Cao. In addition, pet sitters usually put their personal information on websites and social medias in order to deal with some disputes directly. The income of pet sitters is still relatively unstable, and most pet sitters take this work as a part-time job. However, Cao remains hopeful about the future pet-sitting market. “People are starting to care more about their pets’ health and happiness. Benefits which pet-sitting brings about to the pet owners.D. Solutions to deal with the costly pet-sitting services.27. What is Cao's attitude towards the future of pet-sitting A. Disapproving. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Indifferent.CThe Produce Aggregation Program, run by Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT), connects small-scale urban farmers with local communities in need of healthy food. The program collects and processes crops from multiple farmers, combining them into larger quantities for wholesale distribution. This helps overcome challenges small farms face, such as limited production capacity and lack of access to processing facilities and distribution networks.SCLT operates a farm-to-market processing center and manages logistics (后勤) for regular distribution. The program supports 27 farmers, many of whom are refugees, immigrants, or members of marginalized communities. While many of the farmers still rely on farmer markets, the program provides a more stable income source.Twice weekly during the growing season, SCLT orders produce from participating farmers, who deliver it to the food hub. There, it is sorted and packed into $20-value bags, each containing a variety of fresh produce. These are distributed at no cost through community partners such as clinics, recreation centers, and childcare programs. Some clinics distribute the produce through VeggieRx, a program where doctors prescribe (開處方) vegetables to patients. The program is currently funded by the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, which was launched to support underserved farmers and increase food access. However, funding uncertainty remains a challenge. Rising costs, supply chain issues, limited land availability, and climate change all add strain to food assistance programs.Despite these obstacles, SCLT continues its year-round work to improve food access. In addition to the Produce Aggregation Program, the nonprofit supports 60 community gardens, offers training, and runs educational programs and internships. Altogether, its efforts provide healthy, culturally relevant food to about 1, 200 families annually, with the support of local farmers, volunteers, and community partners.28. By counting on farmer markets. D. By providing orders regularly.30. What does the underlined word “strain” in paragraph 4 mean A. Burden. B. Gain. C. Hope. D. Duty.31. What would be a suitable title for the text A. Fighting Urban Poverty B. New Struggles for Small FarmsC. Feeding the Neighbors D. New Trends in Urban FarmingDHoneybees pollinate (授粉) a third of what people eat and drink, but colonies (群體) are on the decline because of various factors. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science (SCS) and the University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside) have created a system to help beekeepers monitor and analyze the health of their beehives (蜂巢) and take corrective actions to prevent colony collapse — when a majority of the worker bees abandon the colony and its queen.Beehives use thermoregulation (溫度調節) to ensure the hive temperature stays between 33and 36 degrees Celsius. For example, bees might to create a protective barrier when it’s cold or fan their wings when it’s hot. But when beehives experience external stressors, such as pesticides or unexpected weather events, they lose the ability to regulate the hive temperature. That’s when beekeepers need to intervene to save the hive. Currently, beekeepers manage hive health using their judgment and past practices to address problems, which can lead to oversights. The Electronic Bee-Veterinarian (EBV) uses low-cost heat sensors and predictive forecasting to assist beekeepers in managing hive temperature and overall honeybee health. Researchers used two sensors, one placed on the outside of the hive and one inside, to detect real-time temperatures in the bee colonies. This data was then fed into a model that calculates the hive health factor. Christos Faloutsos, the Fredkin University Professor of SCS's Computer Science, said researchers looked to heat-transfer physics when developing the EBV’s beehive health forecasting model. “If the health factor is close to one, the bees are healthy and thermoregulating. If it is much lower than one, it means the beehive isn’t healthy and might need an intervention. Once we have this health factor computed every day, we can do standard forecasting and the beekeeper can take further action. ”Understandability was a key aspect of this project, Faloutsos said. Researchers wanted everything to be simplified into one number, the hive health factor, so any beekeeper who adopted the technology could easily interpret the forecasting result. Such technology could maximize honey production for beekeepers and help them prevent potential future challenges, such as stress from bee diseases.32. According to paragraph 2, how do honeybees react when the hive temperature drops A Fly away in groups. B. Move around freely.C. Gather closely together. D. Spread out extensively.33. What is a problem with traditional hive management A. Beekeepers lack expertise. B. It depends on experience.C. Technology is too complicated. D. It focuses on honey production.34. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about A. When the EBV can work best. B. How the EBV predicts hive health.C. What is the most important part in the EBV. D. How the EBV controls the hive temperature.35. What can be inferred about the EBV from the text A. It will profit beekeepers much. B. It is understandable but unaffordable.C. It will replace beekeepers’ judgment. D. It helps improve the quality of honey. Procrastination is delaying tasks, even when we know we shouldn’t. She had vivid imagination and loved to try new things. She also had a passion for painting. Under her brush, colors seemed to come alive, mixing and flowing to create magic images. One autumn morning, Eliza’s teacher, Mrs Perkins, announced the annual school talent show. Excited whispers spread through the classroom. Each student was to present a unique talent. Eliza didn’t want to be left out, so she said, “I can juggle (拋接) five apples at the same time!”Her classmates stared in amazement, eyes wide with wonder. In truth, Eliza had never juggled more than three apples before. But her classmates’ admiration gave her a great feeling. The following Sunday, Eliza tried to juggle five apples in the backyard. With her eyes narrowing in concentration, she threw them into the air again and again. However, the apples slipped through her fingers like autumn rain. With each failed attempt, Eliza’s confidence gradually disappeared. She sat among the apples lying around, her heart heavy with disappointment. Her younger brother, Max, wandered over, observing her curiously. He asked why she was throwing apples around and sat down beside her. Burying her face in her hands, Eliza admitted that she had told everyone she could juggle five apples at the same time, but she simply couldn’t make it. After thinking for a while, Max suggested that maybe she could try something else for the show, something she was really good at. Eliza fell silent, lost in thought over his words. One afternoon, as Eliza walked under the tree in front of her class building, a wind shook the branches above. A piece of paper danced down, landing at her feet. It was a poster for the talent show, colorful and eye-catching. 根據文章第二段中的“Beehives use thermoregulation(溫度調節)to ensure the hive temperature stays between 33 and 36 degrees Celsius. For example, bees might cluster to create a protective barrier when it's cold or fan their wings when it’s hot.(蜂巢利用溫度調節來確保蜂巢溫度保持在33至36攝氏度之間。 根據文章第二段中的“Currently, beekeepers manage hive health using their judgment and past practices to address problems, which can lead to oversights.(目前,養蜂人依靠自己的判斷和過去的做法來管理蜂巢健康,這可能會導致疏忽。)” 根據文章第三段首句“The Electronic Bee-Veterinarian(EBV)uses low-cost heat sensors and predictive forecasting to assist beekeepers in managing hive temperature and overall honeybee health.(電子蜜蜂獸醫(EBV)利用低成本的熱傳感器和預測性預報來幫助養蜂人管理蜂巢溫度和蜜蜂的整體健康狀況。)” 根據文章最后一段“Such technology could maximize honey production for beekeepers and help them prevent potential future challenges, such as stress from bee diseases.(這項技術可以為養蜂人最大限度地提高蜂蜜產量,并幫助他們預防未來可能面臨的挑戰,如蜜蜂疾病帶來的壓力。)” 故選A項。 36. This helps you set goals you can achieve. Tackle one small task at a time to avoid feeling overwhelmed (不知所措) by big projects.(把大任務分成小任務。 C選項“Simplify the task at hand(簡化手頭的任務)”照應下文“Break big tasks into smaller ones.( 把大任務分成小任務。)” A. confident自信的;B. cautious謹慎的;C. generous慷慨的;D. active活躍的。根據上文“completed a week-long tour with a friend”以及下文“that we could find the streets by ourselves now”可知,作者和朋友在有導游陪同游覽一周后,對獨自認路感到“自信”。故選A項。 A. contribution貢獻;B. exploration探索;C. impression印象;D. expression表達。根據上文“It was our first day to explore the city of Paris on our own.” A. yellow黃色的;B. red紅色的;C. gray灰色的;D. blue藍色的。 A. raindrops雨點,雨滴;B. clouds云朵;C. winds風;D. thunders雷聲。根據下文“hit our heads”以及“As the rain and wind ____5____”可知,開始下雨了,落下“雨滴”,所以此處指的是雨點打在頭上。故選A項。 A. arrived到達;B. depressed使沮喪;C. reduced減少;D. increased增加,加劇。 根據下文“But later she seemed to relax as she ____8____ us and asked us where we were going.” A. pleased高興的;B. excited興奮的;C. shocked震驚的;D. annoyed惱怒的。 A. inspected檢查;B. interviewed采訪;C. comforted安慰;D. required要求。根據上文“But later she seemed to relax”以及下文“and asked us where we were going”可知,女士“安慰”了作者和朋友,并詢問他們要去哪里。 A. rewards獎勵;B. directions方向;C. demands要求;D. praises贊揚。根據上文“where we were going”以及下文“but we were still confused”可知,女士給作者和朋友指了“方向,路”,但他們仍然很困惑。 A. stopped停止;B. corrected糾正;C. changed改變;D. cried哭。 故選A項。 A. bright明亮的;B. broken破碎的;C. wet濕的;D. noisy嘈雜的。 A. agree同意;B. argue爭論;C. choose選擇;D. return返回。 A. pride驕傲;B. relief寬慰,如釋重負;C. pain痛苦;D. fear恐懼。 A. knocked off撞倒;B. taken over接管;C. turned into變成;D. dreamt of夢想,夢寐以求。根據上文“she was the angel”以及下文“Your dream has come true”可知,作者和朋友在迷路時得到了女士的幫助,所以女士就是他們“夢寐以求”的天使。 根據下文“Your dream has come true.
