Have you ever heard of biang biang noodles Do you know how the name come out In Xi’an, the skill of noodle-pulling is so closely connected with the slapping (拍擊) sound that the special noise ended up becoming this dish’s funny name: biang biang noodles.
The “biang” character is onomatopoeic (擬聲的). It is like the sound of hitting a board. It is also believed to be more difficult to write than any other character in the Chinese language, with 58 strokes (筆畫). It is surprising to discover that the character can’t be found in dictionaries. That’s because the character is completely a folk creation. After further understanding of the symbol, I realized that it is also made up of many different elements (元素). Together, they paint a picture of Xi’an’s rich history.
Hiding in biang, for example, is the Chinese character for silk. Xi’an was the starting point of the Silk Road. Along those trade routes, horses were not only used for the transport, but were traded as a products. It makes sense, and then, the biang character includes the symbol for a horse. On both sides of the horse symbol, the Chinese character meaning long or length is also added. Whether this is translated to the Silk Road or to the noodles, both would seem appropriate.
It’s unclear exactly how the difficult character was created. One widely told story says that it was created by a young teacher from the Qin Dynasty who didn’t have enough money for a bowl of biang biang noodles and offered to invent a character instead of payment. Today, there are interesting poems to help remember all of the difficult character’s strokes.
24. The pronunciation of the “biang” character is connected with the ________ of making noodles.
A. skill B. sound C. material D. place
25. Why can’t “biang” be found in dictionaries
A. Because it just appeared recently. B. Because it is too difficult to write.
C. Because it is only a folk creation. D. Because there is a character similar to it.
26. The underlined word “appropriate” probably means “________” in the passage.
A. easy B. short C. different D. proper
27. What’s the best title (標(biāo)題) for the passage
A. The Development of “biang” B. The Introduction of Character “biang”
C. The Influence of Noodles D. The Creation of Chinese Character
C
Well, let’s continue from where we stopped last time. As a parent, I’m sure you clearly know the dangers hidden online. And whether it’s for schoolwork, entertainment, or just making friends, the Internet will surely be a main part of your children’s life. So, it’s important to secure*their online stays.
It’s not an easy task, but keeping open communication is the key. Let them know they can share their online activities with you. Discuss what interests them online and learn about popular websites and apps from them. This will help you understand and find possible risks.
Next, don’t spy (監(jiān)視) your kids. Most kids want to be respected, like respecting others’ personal space, or not opening the cookie jar (罐子) without asking. Internet use is no different. It’s helpful to set clear rules for them, like which websites they can visit, which apps they can use, and what they can share online. Remind them that if they feel uneasy about anything that happens online, they need to tell an adult at once.
How you deal with your kids’ Internet use will depend on their age. There are websites and search tools designed for younger children, such as YouTube Kids, which aims to provide a safe online experience for children. Older kids may be allowed more freedom since they want to make friends and need to use the Internet for information-gathering. So you can discuss with them and set strict rules for them.
Allowing your children to make good decisions online teaches them to be responsible for their behaviors, it also shows that you trust them, and reminds them that rules may be stricter if they don’t follow them.
*The word “secure” in the passage means to protect your children so that they are safe.
28. What does the writer advise parents to do to better understand their kids online behavior
A. Communicate with children actively.
B. Spy on their children’s online activities.
C. Share online activities with their children.
D. Set strict rules for kids’ Internet use without discussion.
29. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A. It’s easy to secure kids’ online stays.
B. It’s useless to set clear rules for kids.
C. How you deal with your kids’ Internet use will depend on their character.
D. Allowing your children to make good decisions online teaches them to be responsible.
30. The writer ends the passage by giving ________.
A. a finding B. an opinion C. an example D. a study

Dear Xi’an Volunteer Center,
I’d love to be a volunteer in the Old People’s Home or Children’s Hospital, helping the people who are in need of help.
I want to be a volunteer because I enjoy helping others and making our city a better place. I have some experience. For example, I helped my grandma at home every week, so I am good with old people. Also, I am patient and kind. I am interested in playing games and telling stories, which might cheer up sick children. My plan is to spend my Saturday mornings helping there. I can talk with the elderly, read books to them, or play simple games with the children.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
