NAIROBI — Mirriam Wambui, a 13-year-old student, speaks Chinese with the confidence of a seasoned linguist despite having only two years of exposure to the language. She won the Kenyan Chinese Bridge Competition, ranked sixth in Africa and made it to the top 30 globally at the contest in Tianjin in late October.
“I was overjoyed to win in Kenya,” Mirriam says. Her journey with the Chinese language began through her eldest brother, who traveled to China in 2015 to pursue a master’s degree in Chinese. When he returned to visit their family in Nairobi in 2019, Mirriam was impressed by his fluency in Chinese. “My brother came back with a cellphone I had never seen before, and everything he brought, including electronics, was made in China. I became curious about this country that seemed to produce so much,” she says with a giggle.
Inspired, she enrolled in Chinese language classes two years ago. In May, with only two weeks left, she asked to join the school’s Chinese Bridge team. “My teacher was shocked as I wasn’t initially picked, but I believed in myself and went all out to prepare.” she says.
Her confidence paid off. At Kenyatta University, she wowed judges and won a laptop, trophy (獎杯) and a sponsored China trip. In October, she visited China. “People were so nice,” she says.
Her success inspired peers to learn Chinese. Teacher Charity Atunga says Chinese is the most popular of three options, with 90 of 200 students choosing it. “Support from parents and schools makes it great. Students see benefits like scholarships,” Atunga adds. She herself studied in China on a scholarship and later became a teacher.
Kenyatta University, in partnership with Shandong Normal University, hosts the Chinese Bridge Competition for high school students in Kenya. Through this partnership, over 300 Kenyan students have traveled to China.
“I want to become an ambassador in the future and learn more about Chinese language and culture.” says Mirriam.

The increase of a protein called alpha-synclein in the brain has long been considered the fundamental cause of Parkinson’s (帕金森病). This leads to the reduced production of dopamine (多巴胺), which helps control muscle movement. While some existing treatments aim to ease these symptoms by improving dopamine levels in the brain, their long-term effects are limited. So far, there are no approved treatments that can end or slow the progression of Parkinson’s.
In an effort to combat this, Gennaro Pagano and his colleagues at Roche, a Swiss pharmaceutical company, developed a new drug called prasinezumab to fight against the build-up of proteins in Parkinson’s disease. They tested the drug on 316 people with early-stage Parkinson’s disease. Among the participants,105 received a placebo, while 211 received the actual drug at either a low or high dose (劑量). At first, the results suggested that the drug had no meaningful impact, but the team later realized it might be effective among those with more severe Parkinson’s.
Additional analysis showed that low and high doses of the drug had a greater effect among the severe participants than seen in the initial pared with taking a placebo, it significantly reduced the rate at which participants’ physical symptoms worsened over the year-long period. Gennaro Pagano, the lead researcher, explains that this could be because people with more rapidly progressing Parkinson’s tend to have higher levels of alpha-synuclein in their brains and, therefore, may benefit more from a drug that potentially clears the protein.
However, Vinata Vedam-Mai at the University of Florida Health says one limitation of the research is that it doesn’t assess whether alpha-synuclein is being cleared from the brain. She would also like to see longer-term data to better determine the drug’s safety and effectiveness. However, the latest trial did not report any serious negative events.
8. What is prasinezumab intended for
A. Improving dopamine levels in the brain.
B. Controlling the progression of Parkinson’s.
C. Increasing the build-up of proteins in the brain.
D. Slowing the aging of Parkinson’s suffers’ muscles.
9. What did the initial outcome of the test show about the drug
A It had no significant effects.
B. It was harmful to patients’ health.
C. It required higher doses to be effective.
D. It succeeded in treating early-stage Parkinson’s.
10. Who may benefit most from the new drug according to the study
A. Patients who had severe Parkinson’s.
B. Patients who took a placebo in the test.
C. Patients who received higher doses of drugs.
D. Patients who had lower alpha-synuclein levels in the brain.
11. What does Vedam-Mai think of the new research
A. It fails to achieve the expected outcome.
B. It proves the safety and effectiveness of the drug.
C. It was a major breakthrough in treating Parkinson’s.
D. It requires additional statistics to evaluate the drug.

One bird may not make a summer but seeing or hearing birds does improve mental wellbeing, a ground-breaking study in the journal Scientific Reports has found.
Researchers tracked 1,292 participants’ everyday encounters with birds last year via a smartphone app called Urban Mind. Over the course of two weeks, the participants, from the UK, Europe, the US, China and Australia, were asked every two hours to document how they were feeling, including whether they were happy or stressed.
The researchers found that participants’ average mental wellbeing scores increased when they saw or heard birds, including among those who said they had been diagnosed (診斷) with depression.
Andrea Mechelli, professor of early intervention (干涉) in mental health at King’s College London, said that the positive effect of bird encounters on people with depression was significant because many “interventions that help so-called ‘healthy people’ don’t work for individuals with mental health issues”. Mechelli said, “We know exercise makes everyone feel better. But it’s so challenging to motivate someone with depression to exercise, while contact with bird life is something that, perhaps, is feasible.”
Adrian Thomas, the author of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ Guide to Birdsong, said the report’s findings came as no surprise as most people described their reaction to birdsong as joy. He added, “Birdsong would have once been the natural soundtrack to all human lives, and I do think that it is rooted somewhere deep within us. It is related with spring and good times coming, which is just one of the reasons why we need to appreciate the role of birds in our life and ensure that nature.”
12. What were the participants asked to do
A. Keep record of moods. B. Keep track of birds.
C. Analyze feeling changes. D. Report health issues.
13. What does the underline word “feasible” mean in Paragraph 4
A. Inspiring. B. Practicable. C. Ineffective. D. Measurable.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. A reasonable doubt to the research question. B. Potential application of the research results.
C. A further explanation of the research findings. D. Detailed descriptions of the research process.
15. Which of the following may the research contribute to
A. Stress relief methods. B. Bird watching activity.
C. Mental health treatment. D. Bird protection campaign.

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知覺) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.

Report on Air Pollution in Our Hometown
Nowadays, the air quality around us is deteriorating rapidly. The main causes of air pollution include the increasing number of vehicles emitting exhaust fumes, industrial emissions, and the burning of fossil fuels. These factors collectively contribute to the hazardous levels of pollutants in the air.
To combat this issue, I suggest several measures. Firstly, the government should encourage the use of public transportation and promote electric vehicles. Secondly, factories should install advanced emission-control systems. Lastly, we should plant more trees to absorb pollutants and improve air quality.
If these measures are effectively implemented, we can expect a significant reduction in air pollution. I envision a future where our hometown enjoys clean, fresh air, and residents lead healthier lives. Let’s work together to protect our environment.

【答案】 One day, however, Mary came with good news. She told Jane the school music festival was to be held the next month and that her classmates all expected her to sing on behalf of her class. Jane’s eyes sparkled but responded doubtfully, “Can I... ” Mary and I immediately assured her that she could make it. In the following month, with the help of Mary, Jane kept on practicing singing. Beautiful songs echoed in our house again and smiles began to appear on her face. Finally the big day came when she could present herself.
When the host announced it was Jane’s turn, she was wheeled onto the stage. Jane was greeted with warm applause. As she began to sing, the audience got absorbed in her beautiful voice. Seconds after her performance, all the audience rose with thunderous cheers. When wheeled off stage, Jane received praise and bunches of flowers from her teachers and classmates. Jane was moved to tears. The kindness and encouragement from her teachers and classmates stimulated Jane’s enthusiasm for life, making her regain confidence in pursuing her original dream, which I will support wholeheartedly.
