On March 28, 1976, Ada Limón was born into a family of artists and teachers in Sonoma, California, U.S. By her own account, Limón fell in love with poetry in high school, but much of her time then was spent on theatre productions. She went on to graduate from the University of Washington with a B.A. in drama in 1998.
Limón then graduated with an M.F.A. in poetry in 2001 from the creative writing program at New York University. To support her poetry writing, Limón took a marketing job at Condé Nast, the publisher of such magazines as Vogue and The New Yorker. While her marketing career grew steadily, Limón published three books of poetry.
In 2010, her mother’s death at age 51 inspired her to reconsider her own career. She quit her marketing job and moved to Kentucky to spend her time writing full-time. In 2015, she published Bright Dead Things, which was a finalist (入圍作品) for the National Book Awards. The book was praised because it expressed thoughts and feelings in a direct way, covering such themes as aging parents and lasting pain.
Aside from writing poems, Ada Limón also taught at Queens University of Charlotte and hosted a radio show called The Slowdown. She saw these roles as chances to introduce more people to poetry. Her regular work in education and on the radio wasn’t just because she loved poetry; it was also about getting others to love and understand it as something important and easy to relate to in our daily lives.
Limón was named the 24th Poet Laureate in 2022. Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who chose Limón as the laureate, described her as a poet who makes connections. “Her accessible, engaging poems make us aware of where we are and who we share our world with. They speak of beauty and heartbreak in ways that can help us move forward,” said Carla. In 2023, Limón wrote In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa at NASA’s request, which will be carved on the spacecraft planned for the 2024 mission to Europa.
4. What can we learn about Limón’s high school life

D. She took part-time jobs while studying drama.

A. Because it was frank.
B. Because it was entertaining.

A. Limón’s free-time activities.

Walking is the best form of exercise. It is good for the upper respiratory (與呼吸有關的) system and the legs. It helps us control our weight and blood sugar. Walking is also a good way to help you make more friends, bringing chances to see new things and meet new people. Personally I try to walk at least 5 miles daily.
As well as walking, I also cycle around Xiamen. Cycling is great for weight loss and helps to build stamina (耐力). However, cycling does not allow for the same level of social contact as a walk. It is for this reason that I will strongly suggest that you try long-distance walking if you want to be physically healthy. I originally started walking around Xiamen because I didn’t have a car, but I soon started to enjoy the walking for its own sake.
I have also made many friends during my walks. It’s not uncommon for my 5-mile walk to sometimes take as long as 2 or 3 hours, because I stop to chat with different shop owners along my route. These days, if I skip my walk for even one day, the people in the shops may want to know why I didn’t come.
I’ll never forget the first time some people followed me when I was walking, and asked if it was okay for them to walk with me, I really didn’t know what to say, so I just replied that I didn’t mind. I have been invited for lunch, dinner and sometimes just to sit and drink tea with total strangers. There is nothing more pleasant than walking past a schoolyard and hearing all the kids say hello to me.
8. Why did the author have to take a walk at the very beginning
A. He wanted to build up his strength. B. He enjoyed walking.
C. He had no car. D. He wished to make friends.
9. What does the underlined word “skip” in the third paragraph probably mean
A. Jump lightly. B. Give up. C. Leave out. D. Change quickly.
10. What can be learned from the text
A. Cycling allows for no social contact. B. Walking is better than cycling.
C. To be healthy, it’s better to cycle. D. The author prefers walking to cycling.
11. Why does the author tell us his walking experience in the last two paragraphs
A. To share the unforgettable experience with us.
B. To show the meaning of walking in social contact.
C. To tell us how to develop the habit of walking.
D. To explain why a usual walk takes him as long as 2 or 3 hours.
D
As we live longer and technology continues its rapid development, we can imagine a future where machines will enlarge our human abilities and help us make better life choices, from health to wealth. Through our dialogue and digital pieces, artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) will understand our life goals and wishes, our duties and limitations. It will help us plan different life events, so we can spend more time enjoying life’s moments.
The ability for AI to understand the complexities and slight differences of human conversation is, however, one hurdle (障礙). There are several thousand known living languages in the world today. Adding to the difficulties are the varied ways words are shared and used across different cultures, including grammar, levels of education and styles of the speakers. Google Duplex, the technology supporting Google Assistant, which places phone calls using a natural-sounding human voice instead of a robotic one, is an early attempt to address such challenges in human communications. But these are just initial whispers in voice of AI’s long journey.
Beyond making reservations and conducting simple dialogues, virtual assistants will need to become far more useful and further fit into the parts of our everyday lives. Not only will they need to foresee what we need before we ask, they also need to understand the context of our conversations and react accordingly. Imagine a snow day when school is canceled for the kids. Knowing that you must now stay at home with your children, your phone would remind you, asking if you’d like your meetings moved to the following day. Alternatively, imagine how much more pleasant your journey home from a business trip would be if your phone could automatically arrange for a ride waiting to pick you up at the airport, based on your travel plan, location, and habits. The possibilities are endless.
12. What do we know about AI
A. It narrows our abilities. B. It limits our better choice.
C. It helps us enjoy life better. D. It doesn’t know our limitations.
13. What makes it hard for AI to understand what humans say
A. Low level of speakers. B. Varieties of languages and cultures.
C. Imperfection of AI. D. Similarities between languages.
14. Which word can best describe the author’s attitude towards AI
A. Supportive. B. Uncaring. C. Worried. D. Doubtful.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of the text
A. AI Will Replace Humans B. AI Will Set Goals for Us
C. AI Will Meet Challenges D. AI Will Be Part of Our Daily Lives

However, he lost his courage when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. A warm smile lit his face. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you ” “You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.” So the boy had no choice but to thank her from the bottom of his heart.
As Howard Kelly left that house, as well as feeling stronger physically, he sensed a return of his faith in God which he had nearly abandoned.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were confused, so they sent her to the big city, where they knew that the specialists would be able to diagnose(診斷) this rare sickness. Dr. Howard Kelly, now famous in the medical community, was called in as a consultant (會診醫師).

I’d like to be your pen friend, for I’m a senior high school student as you are and I’m crazy about Beijing Opera too. What’s more, my dad is working as an actor in one of the Beijing Opera theaters. He is open-minded as well as easy-going. I’m sure my dad and I can be helpful. I believe we will have much to share and can get along well with each other.
Please write back as soon as possible so that we can make a plan.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】 When he heard the name of the town where the young woman lived, a strange light filled his eyes. He recalled the kind-hearted and enthusiastic lady who offered him a glass of milk years ago. Hurriedly, he walked into the ward where she was treated. On entering the room, he spotted her sleeping in peace in bed and recognized the familiar face in no time. From that day on, he gave special attention to her case. After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval.
He looked at it, then wrote something in the blank space and the bill was sent to the young woman’s room. She was afraid to open it because she was positive that it would take the rest of her life to pay it off. Finally she looked, and the note on the side of the bill caught her attention. She read these words: “Paid in full with a glass of milk.” The note was signed by Dr. Howard Kelly. Tears of joy flooded her eyes. Love spread through human hearts and hands.
