Gahriela worked for a multinational company as a successful project manager in Brazil. Later she was transferred to manage a team in Sweden. She was excited about her new role but soon realized that managing her new team would be a challenge.
Despite their friendliness, Gabriela didn’t feel respected as a leader. Her new staff would question her proposals openly in meetings, and when she gave them instructions on how to carry out a task, they would often go about is in their own way without checking with her. When she announced her decisions on the project, they would continue giving their opinions as if it was still up for discussion.
What Gabriela was experiencing was a culture shock in expectations. Dutch psychologist Geert Hofstede uses the concept of “power distance” to describe how power is distributed (分布) in different cultures. In her previous work environment, Gabriela was used to a high power distance culture where power is respected. In such a culture, leaders make the big decisions and are not often challenged. Her Swedish team, however, were used to working in a low power distance culture where employees often work together with their bosses to find solutions and make decisions. Here, leaders act as coaches who encourage independent thought and expect to be challenged.
When Gabriela became aware of the cultural differences between her and her team, she had an open conversation with them about their feelings about her leadership.
Pleased to be asked for their thoughts, Gabriela’s team openly expressed that they were not used to being told what to do. They enjoyed having more room for initiative and creative freedom. When she told her team exactly what she needed them to do, they felt that she didn’t trust them to do their job well.
With a better understanding of the underlying reasons behind each other’s behaviour, Gabriela was able to make adjustments to her management style. Finally, she effectively motivated her team to achieve their goals.
4. What problem did Gabriela have with her Swedish team at the beginning
A. Her Swedish staff didn’t understand her instructions.
B. They were always refusing to follow her directions.
C. Her authority was challenged by her Swedish staff.
D. They looked down upon her because she was a female.
5. What is encouraged in the working culture in Sweden
A. Independent thinking and mild character. B. Competitive spirit and mild character.
C. Professional spirit and risk-taking behavior. D. Active participation and creative thinking.
6. Which of the following can best describe Gabriela
A. Bossy and rude. B. Flexible and communicative.
C. King but stubborn. D. Strict but trustworthy.
7. What can we learn from Gabriela’s story
A. Two heads are better than one. B. When in Rome, do as Romans do.
C. Birds of a feather flock together. D. Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Have you ever wondered why elephants get so big Thanks to their enormous size, they have been able to survive for thousands of years in all kinds of circumstances. Their size has allowed them to reach high food sources, knock down trees instantly and find water underground. Not only does their size benefit them but also their ecosystem.
Elephants use their size to create holes in the ground to find water. During droughts, they will start to dig holes to find water that might be stored underground. Elephants are not just helping themselves but also smaller species. Those water holes that they create become water sources for other species. These holes are essential, especially during droughts. Without elephants, some smaller species would not have access to water.
Elephants spend a lot of time eating. To be exact, they spend 12 to 18 hours a day eating. Since they eat so much, they are always on the shift to find food sources. These magnificent creatures can walk up to 50 miles a day. As elephants make their way to their next location, they drop dung filled with seeds along the way. Once on the ground, those seeds will begin to grow. The elephant dung helps the seeds shoot. This helps increase the biodiversity of plants and trees.
Elephants create homes for other species. Another one of the roles and importance of elephants in the ecosystem is creating homes for smaller creatures. Unexceptional small species do not have the size to knock down trees or create holes in the ground to create a home. These animals rely on elephants to do that for them. Elephants use their powerful kicks and teeth to knock down trees. Small species will then use that as shelter. Furthermore, elephants help spread seeds that grow into trees and plants that animals will call home.
8. What is the cause of elephants’ survival for thousands of years
A. Their huge size. B. Rich food sources.
C. Their unique shape. D. Plenty of water underground.
9. How do elephants help increase the biodiversity of plants and trees

A. They make shelters for other species.
B. They dig water holes for other creatures.
C. They help the seeds of plants spread and grow.

Peanuts are among the most popular snack foods in the United States, but about 2 percent of U.S. schoolchildren have an allergic (過敏的) reaction to them. A 2015 British study might bring hope to the American parents who are concerned about their kid’s allergy to peanuts.
People allergic to peanuts can develop skin conditions or watery eyes. Children with a peanut allergy can develop a skin condition called eczema. Some reactions are so serious that they can result in death. So far, doctors have advised parents not to serve peanut-containing foods to children under the age of 3. But a study published in 2015 in Britain found that feeding children peanuts earlier might help to solve the problem.
Anthony Fauci, head of America’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, notes that in Israel, people have a tradition of feeding peanuts to babies and says the percentage of Israeli children with a peanut allergy is much lower than the rate among Jewish children living in England. “In Israel, there is a custom of feeding peanut-based foods to babies within the first few months of life, and the rate of peanut allergy dropped by over 80% among the Israeli kids compared to those Jewish children living in England.”
Dr. Fauci says this finding is very important. It means that babies have a natural mechanism (機(jī)制) that can be trained to react positively to peanuts, which may turn off as the baby reaches the age of 1. He says a team of experts have agreed on new guidelines for U.S. doctors who deal with children’s allergies.
Fauci calls giving children peanuts a way of “challenging” their bodies. “If the child has a history of serious eczema, you should bring the child to do a skin test or a blood test to determine if the child has an allergy to peanuts. If they do, you should refrain from challenging that child. If they don’t, it would be safe to feed them peanuts when they are babies at 4 to 6 months old.”
12. What might be the worst result of allergic reaction to peanuts
A. Watery eyes. B. Serious eczema. C. Death. D. Skin cancer.
13. What does Anthony Fauci say about peanut allergy
A. Babies’ mechanism can be trained to react actively to peanuts.
B. Feeding babies peanuts earlier might increase the rate of allergy.
C. Jewish children in England are less likely to be allergic to peanuts.
D. A skin test is not necessary for a child with a history of serious eczema.
14. Which one is closest to the meaning of the underlined phrase “refrain from” in Paragraph 5
A. Risk. B. Continue. C. Keep. D. Avoid.
15. What would be the best title for this passage
A. Say NO to Products Containing Peanuts B. Feeding Peanuts to Children Early Helps
C. Peanut Allergy Threatens Children’s Health D. Guidance on Dealing with Children’s Allergies

With the pressure of exams, assignments (作業(yè)), college applications, athletics, and social situations, high school students today need to learn how to manage stress more than any generation before. ____16____
Put self-care first
As high school students, you’re at the age where you’re growing, and your brains are finishing developing, which means you need to get more sleep than you used to. However, sleep is just one part of self-care. ____17____ Take time out each day to exercise. It will make you happier and help you recharge (休整). You’ll notice better performance, increased focus, and less stress.
Think positively
Instead of losing your mind by assuming the worst, try picturing the best possible outcome. Manage your time
____19____ Rather than have an endless to-do list that you’re constantly crossing off, learn the art of time blocking —assigning a certain amount of time to each task. You’ll find that time blocking increases your ability to focus, lowers your stress levels, and gives you something to look forward to rather than feeling like you’re working on the same thing for a whole day.
Lighten up and laugh a little
Even when you do your day-to-day activities, don’t take things too seriously—laugh a little. Laughter can deal with stress as well as exercise can. It’s another healthy escape. ____20____ For example, you can watch your favorite movies or cartoons, and read some funny books or magazines. Most importantly, you should be able to laugh at yourself even when things don’t go your way.
A. Stay organized and schedule your time wisely.
B Here are some ideas that can help you deal with high school.
C. There are things you can do to promote a light-hearted nature.
D. The more you believe these thoughts, the truer they will become.

Kindness of Strangers
We rely on a community where helping others is highly appreciated. When we need help, it creates a web that ties us together.
Once upon a time, I was in the kitchen getting dinner ready when my fourteen-year-old daughter, Cassandra, called me from her room. “Mom, can you help me get downstairs ” She had lung disease and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a day, so it was impossible for her to move up and down the stairs without help. I turned down the stove and ran upstairs to her room. Cassandra let out a sigh and closed her eyes. “Mom, I wish it wasn’t so hard for me to climb the stairs.”
“I know, honey. We’ll try to solve the problem.”
My daughter’s words reminded me of an incident. A month earlier, a company introduced an electric stairlift (座椅電梯) to us. My daughter could use this stairlift to go up and down stairs by herself without anyone helping her. Hearing the perfect product, our whole family was very excited and looking forward to it. The stairlift sounded wonderful because it would greatly improve my daughter’s life. Unluckily, we couldn’t afford it although John, my husband, even took two jobs to support the family.
To meet Cassandra’s wish, I got round to ask the charity organization in our community for help once again. They had lent us a wheelchair before we bought one. Maybe they could help with a stairlift, too. I held my breath while the phone rang. “Do you have a stairlift I could borrow ” I asked them hopefully. However, they hadn’t, but they promised to call us right away if they got one.

【答案】Dear Chris,
Thank you for inviting me to the Irish Traditional Music Festival last weekend. It was an amazing experience and I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with you.
The festival left me with a deeper appreciation for Irish music and culture. What impressed me most were the talent of the musicians and the lively atmosphere of the event. Old Irish melodies gently touched my soul, my pressure melting away.
I am so grateful for the chance to have a close taste of the local culture. And I am looking forward to more opportunities to explore Ireland with you in future.
Best regards,
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Paragraph One:
Hanging up the phone, I told this to my family anxiously. Hearing what I said, my daughter could not hide her upset. And then she let out a sigh deeply and squeezed a smile. Looking at my daughter, I patted her head and said, ”Things are going to be fine, honey. The community will help us find a stairlift. All we can do is wait. If they don’t find one, we’ll work hard and save up to buy you one. Hearing this my daughter’s eyes filled with hope again, and said gently “Thank you, Mom.”
Paragraph Two:
One early morning, we heard someone knocking at the door. I opened the door and found a couple of community staff standing there, wearing a smile on their face. We greeted each other and the community workers said they had found a stairlift, which was donated by the previous company. Tears glistening in my eyes, I was so grateful to those who gave us a hand when we were in trouble. My daughter was overflowing with happiness after hearing this. At the moment, we realized it’s kindness that makes the world go on, particularly from strangers.
