(2)科普知識
①Happy as a pig in mud. It’s a funny saying, isn’t it For much of the past century, scientists thought non-human animals didn’t have emotions. But recently, we've learned that they're more intelligent than we thought and they do have emotions.
②Frans de Waal, a primatologist at Emory University, believes that many animals feel fear, pride, hope, joy, and happiness. However, they don't experience these emotions the same way as we do. “We can observe animals and guess how they feel or look at their hormones (激素) and see if they’re stressed, but we can’t really know how they feel inside—we're just making our best guesses.” says Fay Clark at the University of Bristol. So, how can we tell what they’re feeling inside more scientifically
③To better understand animals, scientists started looking at animals’ faces. Researchers have found that horses, cows, and rabbits make certain facial expressions when they are in pain. Sara Hintze of the University of Natural Resources says that positive emotions are harder to read, but researchers are beginning to explore the signs of positive emotions and there’s still a lot to learn.
④Researchers have had more success with vocalizations. In a study from 2022, one scientist, Elodie Briefer, and her team made a computer program to tell whether pigs’ noises are negative or positive. They used more than 7000 recordings from different situations. In situations thought to be positive, such as when pigs were running free, eating, or expecting a reward, they usually made sounds like grunts and barks. In negative situations, such as when they were fighting or being handled by humans, their grunts and barks were longer and deeper, or they made loud squeals and screams.
⑤These new findings help start campaigns (運動) to move from just stopping animals suffering (受罪), to doing everything we can to make sure they live happy lives. This is especially true for animals living on farms or in zoos. Briefer says that people will soon realize that understanding animals’ feelings is an important part of caring for them, maybe even as important as their health.
1.What can we learn from the passage
A.Animals have the same emotions as humans do.
B.Animals make facial expressions to show happiness.
C.We’ve done well in caring for animals’ mental health.

2.The underlined word “vocalizations” in Paragraph 4 probably means “______”.
A.actions B.sounds C.emotions D.looks
3.What might be the best title for the passage
A.Make Full Use of Animals’ Intelligence B.Keep an Eye on Taking Care of Animals

Shenzhou XVI spaceship (宇宙飛船) reached space on May 30. There are three people in the spaceship: Jing Haipeng, 57, Zhu Yangzhu, 37, and Gui Haichao, 37.
They are special in many ways. Jing is one of the most famous astronauts (宇航員) in China. This is his fourth time to fly into space. Gui is a scientist. He is also a teacher from Beihang university.
Both Zhu and Gui are China’s third-generation astronauts. They are from a group of researchers and engineers. One woman and 17 men are chosen. And then they are in three groups. One group is spacecraft pilots. They “fly” the spaceship. Another group is spaceflight engineers. They “fix” the spaceship. There is also a group of science payload specialists (載荷專家), such as Gui. They do scientific studies in space.
Everything in the spaceship is a payload, such as: machines, people and animals. Science payload specialists are scientists in the spaceship.
People are also interested in Gui’s glasses because astronauts aren’t usually nearsighted (近視的). But choosing specialists is different from choosing other astronauts. As we all know, activities like listening to the birds or taking a walk in the park is good for our health. But someone thinks birdwatching is often boring.
In fact, a study published in 2024 shows that even half an hour of birdwatching could make us happier, healthier and help us get close to nature. Even hearing birds indoors through an open window can change our bad feelings. The study also shows that it is better to watch birds than to take a walk.
So why is birdwatching so good for us Biophilia (親生物性) could be a big part of it. It means that humans have a good relationship with nature—some would think that we should see ourselves as part of nature—so being in nature makes us feel well. But biodiversity (生物多樣性) is important too. The study shows that biodiversity is a natural medicine for humans that can help us relax and do more activities.
Another reason is that after being careful to do birdwatching, we can get happiness and know a lot about birds. The study also shows that noticing wildlife in nature can make us get closer to nature and learn more about it. So birdwatching can make us feel happy.
So, take your binoculars and walk into nature for birdwatching to help you relax and be happy. Enjoy every moment and have fun.

Do you want to live a happier life Try laughing for no reason. That’s how millions of people start their day at Laughter Yoga (瑜伽) Clubs around the world, and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy.
The first Laughter Yoga Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr Madan Kataria. “Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” said Dr Kataria. “Everyone’s naturally good at laughing. We want people to feel happy with their lives.”
A 5-year study in California shows that laughter can alleviate stress in our body and improve our health. So, what is Laughter Yoga I went to my nearest Laughter Yoga Club to find out. I was quite nervous at first, because I thought laughing with a group of strangers could make me look silly. Our laughter teacher told us to clap (拍) our hands and say, “ho ho ho, ha ha ha.” He said our bodies couldn’t tell the difference between fake (假的) laughter and real laughter, so they both worked. Ten minutes later, everybody in the room was laughing for real. At the end of the class, I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt.

Try to think about this: When you sit down and begin to eat a tasty tomato, suddenly the tomato starts to shout! It would never really happen. But a new study showed that plants make sounds when they are stressed (壓力).
Scientists from Tel Aviv University did the study. They used ultrasonic microphones (超聲波麥克風) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes. They listened to three groups of plants: one group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the stems (莖), and the third group was untouched.
The first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times every hour. The third group only made the sound once every hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the study team told CNN.
Scientists believe that animals and insects may listen to the sounds. For example, the sound can tell them that the plant is stressed and not good for laying eggs on (產卵). When an animal wants to eat plants, it can also use sound to choose which one to eat.
After the study, the scientists also listened to other plants such as wheat and corn (玉米). They made more sounds when stressed. Scientists said the study can help farmers better take care of the plants in the future by “hearing” how they feel.

Do you know a “shore keeper (海岸衛士)” In fact, it’s not a job for people like zookeeper. It is a job for a special kind of forest—mangrove forest. In China, we call it hongshulin or “red forest”. Let’s go into a mangrove forest to have a look.
They grow near the sea. They can grow up to 10 meters.
They keep the land from the sea. This way, they protect the land from strong winds and waves. The trees stand tidy team, with shorter ones standing at the front and taller ones at the back. When typhoons (臺風) come, they protect the towns nearby.
Like other trees, mangrove trees take in CO2 to make oxygen (氧氣). They are helping to keep the air clean and slow down weather change on Earth. Mangrove trees can grow up to 10 meters. Many wild birds live here. Many birds stop by for food during their trip.
Are the trees red No, mangrove trees don’t have red leaves or flowers. They are green. But they have special bark (樹皮). Their bark can be used to make red dyes (染料). The bark gets air through small holes. The holes can close during high tide (漲潮). This way, the tree won’t die.
Some parts of the roots (根) grow out of the water. They need more oxygen to live. They are also homes to snakes and lizards. The roots grow in salty water. They are not easy to get through. In the 13th century the famous Italian traveller Marco Polo travelled a long way to China. During his stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things he discovered was paper money. In Western countries, people did not use paper money until the 15th century. However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7th century.
A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2, 000 years ago. He made it from wood. He took the wood from trees and made it into paper. He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book.
Now paper still comes from trees. We use a lot of paper every day. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth. If there are no trees, there will be no paper. Every day, people throw away about 2, 800 tons of paper. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting nearly 48, 000 trees every day. Since it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now. If we don’t, we will not have enough time to grow more trees to take the place of those we use for paper.
So, can we save paper We can use both sides of every piece of paper, especially when we are making notes. We can choose drinks in bottles instead of those in paper packets. We can also use cotton handkerchiefs but not paper ones. When we go shopping, we can use fewer paper bags. If the shop assistant does give us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse it later.
Everyone can help to save paper. If we all try our best, we can help protect trees. And we should do it now before it is too late.

Goldfish are good pets. They are easy to care for. But they need the right home. Fish need more than a bowl. They are too small. Goldfish belong in tanks. A tank is better than a bowl. It holds more water. Your fish will have more room.
First, choose a place for the tank. Pick a safe spot. Put it where it will not fall. Do not put it near a window. The water will get too warm.
Next, add tiny rocks. Put in plants. You can add toy ships. These make good hiding places. Fish like hiding.
Finally, add water. Wait before adding your fish. Check that the water stays clean. Buy a pump. It cleans the water. Dirty water makes fish sick.
Now you can add your fish! You will bring it home in a bag. The bag will be filled with water. Let the bag float in the tank. The fish will get used to the tank. Then, open the bag. The fish will swim out!
Buy food for your fish. Do not feed it too much! Extra food makes the water dirty. It sinks to the bottom. Just give your fish what it can eat.
Put a cover on the tank. This keeps the fish safe. Nothing can fall into the tank. Your fish cannot jump out. If the cover has a light, you can watch your fish at night.
Each week the tank needs to be cleaned. Take out some old water. Add new water. Scrape the walls of the tank if they look dirty. But do not worry. It does not have to be spotless.
Just keep the water clean. Your fish will be happy!

Every dog should learn the command (命令) “no”. When the dog hears “no”, she should stop doing what she is doing before she hurts (傷害) herself, hurts you or someone else, or breaks things. Sometimes giving the command with body languages (語言) is useful. The command will help your dog learn a little self-control (自控). Here are some things that you can do.
Show your dog the behavior To teach the dog “no”, begin by showing her the behavior (行為) you want her to know. For example, show her a treat in your hand, and then say “no” before closing your fist (拳頭) around the treat. Let her smell at your hand, but don’t give her the treat. If she stops trying and turns away, give her a treat from your other hand.
Have patience You can do the exercise ten times or even more before your dog understands that she gets the treat by leaving your closed hand alone. Stay patient enough with her, and always give a good treat if she can do it well.
3. ______________ Your dog will understand you by watching what you are doing. So, watch your body language. Stand tall and give the command in a strong voice, but don’t try to make her angry. You want her to understand and follow the command, not to make her afraid.
Teach your dog to follow the command with the treat on the floor “No” is easier when your dog can’t reach the treat anyway (when it’s in your fist). The next step is to place the treat on the floor with your hand. You may have to start with your hand completely around the treat, but over some times, begin lifting your hand until she stops when you say “no” even with the treat in the open.

There are some popular family videos that are being posted on Chinese social media these days. In these videos, a young child calls out to his or her mother or father; the parent comes into the room smiling, turns around and calls out to his or her own parent; the grandparent then comes into the room smiling and calls out to his or her parent, the great-grandparent. This kind of family is called “four generation (四世同堂)” in China.
It started on Douyin and has been popular in social media in other countries. People from all over the world have talked much about the videos and even made their own. The videos also make some people remember their family members who have been dead. “Because of the video, I will visit my grandmother this weekend,” a Twitter user wrote. “I have to say that family love is usually a strong value in China,” wrote Justin. The “four generation” videos not only touched foreign viewers, but also gave them a deeper look into Chinese family values.
In most East Asian cultures, it is common for many generations of a single family to live together. This is called a big family. In most Western countries, most families are small families, or families that are made up of just children and their parents.
In Western culture, privacy (隱私) and independence (獨立) are highly valued. Kids usually move out of the house after they turn eighteen. Many of them borrow money or work part-time jobs in order to pay for college. If they choose to keep living with their parents after growing up, it can be seen as a failure. Although family structures in the East and West may be different, the love between family members is common. That might be why the “four generation” videos have won so many hearts around the world.

D.We’re still on the way to read animals’ positive emotions.
C.Take a Close Look at Animals’ Emotions D.Find a Way to Record Animals’ Emotions
4.What is the structure (結構) of this article
A. B. C. D.
【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.D
【導語】本文主要介紹了為了更好地了解動物,科學家們開始觀察動物的臉,近距離觀察動物的情緒。
1.細節理解題。根據“Sara Hintze of the University of Natural Resources says that positive emotions are harder to read, but researchers are beginning to explore the signs of positive emotions and there’s still a lot to learn.”可知,我們仍然在解讀動物積極情緒的道路上。故選D。
2.詞義猜測題。根據“They used more than 7000 recordings from different situations”和“they usually made sounds like grunts and barks”可知,此處是在介紹豬的聲音,所以vocalizations和sounds意思相近,故選B。
3.最佳標題題。根據“We can observe animals and guess how they feel or look at their hormones (激素) and see if they’re stressed, but we can’t really know how they feel inside—we’re just making our best guesses.”和“To better understand animals, scientists started looking at animals’ faces.”
It’s safe to wear glasses in the space station. However, during the sending and returning, Gui needs to take off the glasses, or there might be some dangerous problems.
1.What do we know about the third-generation astronauts
A.They are all men. B.There are 18 people in the group.
C.Jing Haipeng is one of them. D.They are all spaceflight specialists.
2.What is Gui Haichao’s job this time
A.He flies the spaceship. B.He fixes the spaceship.
C.He does scientific studies. D.He teaches students about space.
3.What are science payload specialists
A.They are scientists in the spaceship. B.They are everything in the spaceship.
C.They are machines, people and animals. D.They are astronauts in the spaceship.
4.What question does the last paragraph answer
A.What is it like to be in a spaceship B.Why can’t nearsighted people go into space
C.How did Gui Haichao become an astronaut D.Can nearsighted people be astronauts
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.D

2.細節理解題。根據“There is also a group of science payload specialists (載荷專家), such as Gui. They do scientific studies in space.”可知,桂海潮負責在太空做科學研究。故選C。
3.細節理解題。根據“Science payload specialists are scientists in the spaceship.”可知,科學載荷專家是宇宙飛船上的科學家。故選A。
4.主旨大意題。根據“People are also interested in Gui’s glasses because astronauts aren’t usually nearsighted (近視的). But choosing specialists is different from choosing other astronauts. It’s safe to wear glasses in the space station. However, during the sending and returning, Gui needs to take off the glasses, or there might be some dangerous problems.”
1.What can we learn from paragraph 2
A.It is better to take a walk than to watch birds in nature.
B.Even keeping the door open can make us happy again.
C.Birdwatching can be helpful to us and make us happier.
D.Taking a walk for one hour can help us watch birds.
2.The underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A.why Biophilia is helpful to us B.why biodiversity is so important
C.why we are part of our nature D.why birdwatching is good for us
3.What is the correct structure (結構) of the article
A.①→②→③④→⑤ B.①→②③④→⑤
C.①②→③→④⑤ D.①②③→④→⑤
4.What is the best title of the article
A.Take a walk and be happy! B.Go birdwatching and have fun!
C.Watch birds and protect nature. D.Walk into nature and find birds!
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.B
