Pat Smith, a 70-year-old grandmother, has become a famous environmental activist. She spent one year cleaning up litter from 52 beaches on the UK’s south coast.
Smith set out on her task in January to carry out her New Year’s resolution (決心) of making her community a better and cleaner place. The great goal came to her after watching a documentary on plastic pollution the previous year, and she knew she couldn’t just do nothing.
Over the year, Smith cleaned beaches from Coverack on the Lizard Peninsula to Blackpool Sands in Devon. Often, volunteers would join her in her efforts. During her beach cleans, Smith was sometimes mistaken for doing community service that have been ordered by court as a punishment. She said:“People don’t understand I’ve been doing this voluntarily. In order to help achieve this goal, she founded The Final Straw (吸管). “I founded the Final Straw to try and raise awareness of the very harmful damage we are doing to our oceans from our using single-use plastics. I feel I have a responsibility to my children and grandchildren to do something about it,” she said.

Please let’s try to be morel thoughtful in this coming year. I’m driven to try and protect our living planet for my children and grandchildren and I will continue to do everything in my power to achieve that.” It’s particularly heartwarming to see more and more people taking part in it and learning about how plastic affects our world, as this gives us all a lot of hope for the future.

Joan Feynman, born in 1927 in Queens, New York, was the younger sister of the famous physicist Richard Feynman. Growing up.Richard played a key role in developing Joan’s curiosity and scientific interest, teaching her high-level mathematics and science. At the age of five, she was already helping him in his experiments.
For her fourteenth birthday, Richard gave Joan a gift, a college-level physics textbook, Astronomy by Rebecca Horace Baker. This book not only deepened her understanding of physics but also showed her the possibilities for women in the field of science. Inspired by this, Joan went after a rigorous academic (學術) path, which means she chose to study in a way that requires a lot of hard work, self-control, and resonsibility. Later, she successfully earned a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College and later a PhD in 1958.
Despite her academic success, Joan took a stop from physics in 1960 to focus on her family, marrying and raising two children. However, this period was ended by a sense of depression, leading her to seek jobs in 1962. Following an expert’s advice, she got three job offers and chose to work part-time at Lamont, where she began her research into Earth’s magnetosphere (磁層), making important contributions to its understanding. It was her determination to explore science that helped Joan gain her mental health again.
Joan’s career was marked by many scientific breakthroughs, particularly in the study of solar wind and its interaction with Earth’s magnetosphere. As author or co-author of more than 185 papers, Joan’s research achievements range from discovering the shape of the Earth’s magnetosphere to confirming the origin of auroras (極光). In 1974, she made history as the first woman to be an officer of the American Geophysical Union, and in 2000, she was honored with NASA’s Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal.
“Joan Feynman leaves a wealth of scientific achievements,” said American Physical Society (APS) CEO Kate Kirby. “Despite being prevented to explore science by social expectations, she stuck to it, and her achievements serve as an inspiration to women who wish to go after a career in science.”
28.How did Richard influence Joan

Ecotourism has got great attention in recent years as a form of travel that focuses on the protection of natural environments and the health and happiness of local communities. It is a responsible way of exploring natural areas and helpful to both the environment and the economy. It’s like going on a trip that’s good for both the plants and animals and the local economy.
Let’s think about African elephants. People used to take their ivory (象牙) for money, but it’s much better to keep them alive. Elephants can make a lot more money if people come to see them in their natural home. One elephant can be worth about $ 1.3 million during its life. Ecotourism is a better way to develop economy and do less harm to nature.
Places like nature reserves (保護區) and national parks stop people from cutting down trees and making pollution. They also keep the homes of animals safe. The money from ecotourism can take the place of money made by mining (采礦) or destroying forests. It also makes sure the area has a positive development for a long time. Guides teach us why clean nature is important and how to protect it, making us better travelers.
When ecotourism is done right, it can help local people make money in new ways. In countries with lots of wildlife, like Rwanda, people who used to hunt animals can now work as guides. This uses their knowledge of the animals and their homes. When local people are part of managing tourism, they get more money to improve community projects in education, transportation, and health care. Ecotourism also lets local people stay on their land, keep it clean, and keep their traditions.
Being an ecotourist means you care about the places you visit. But it also gives you amazing experiences, helping you connect with nature, animals, and the people you meet on your trip. Once you’ve had this kind of travel, you might not want to travel in the old way again.
32.Why does the writer mention African elephants
A.To give an example of ecotourism.
B.To show where to experience ecotourism.
C.To draw readers’ attention to natural beauty.
D.To compare their value with other animals.
33.What do nature reserves and national parks do for ecotourism
A.They attract more tourists.
B.They change the role of guides.
C.They allow the locals to visit for free.
D.They stop bad behaviors and protect animals.
34.How does ecotourism help former hunters in Rwanda
A.By keeping their hunting tradition.
B.By educating them about ecotourism.
C.By providing them with jobs in ecotourism.
D.By improving their survival skills in the wild.
35.What is the main idea of the text
A.Ecotourism is about saving animals.
B.Ecotourism is a better way to travel.
C.Ecotourism is the only solution to nature.
D.Ecotourism is a new source of economic growth.

Yesterday my friend and I were talking about it,” Belle replied. “Do you have any idea about how we should celebrate this day and make it memorable for Dad ” Fred asked. “Hmm... I was thinking about it too and have some ideas,” Belle answered excitedly.
“What are you kids talking about ” their Mom asked, entering their room. “Mom, we are wondering about how to celebrate Father’s Day,” Belle said. “Oh, I am surprised you kids can remember the day! Well, I am thinking of cooking some favorite dishes for your father. You both should think of ways to decorate the house beautifully,” Mom said.
“That would be great!” said Belle and Fred together. Both of them got up smiling, thinking of hundreds of ways to celebrate Father’s Day. Mom went to the kitchen, and Belle and Fred started doing their homework. But soon Fred noticed Belle deep in thought so he asked what the matter was. “Fred, I am thinking that our parents do everything for us but they demand nothing from us. Isn’t it bad that we never think about them and are always concerned about our needs ” Belle replied. “Sometimes we are so busy with our lives that we don’t pay proper attention to our parents. We should listen to whatever they say properly and answer them. We must also study hard to get good grades,” Fred said.
The next day, all three of them, Belle, Fred and their Mom, got busy preparing their surprise celebration for Father’s Day. Belle drew a family picture with her crayons (蠟筆). Hi, everyone! I’ve really missed hanging out with you all. I want to share my summer adventure in Mexico with you. It was my first journey outside the United States, and it was truly amazing! I picked up some really useful travel tips and had a fantastic time experiencing a new culture. The first and most important tip I learned was to get your passport ahead of time. I almost didn’t make it because I waited too long to get mine! Next, if you’re flying, make sure to buy your plane ticket early to save money. I found that booking early can really make a difference in the cost. Also, my another travel tip is to be sure you pack lightly. You will be taking that luggage around with you everywhere, and it gets heavy quickly! Lastly, I recommend you have a wonderful time by exploring the local culture, tasting new foods, and going to cool events like dance shows and street festivals. The food was delicious, and the festivals were full of color and excitement. If you follow these tips, I believe you’ll have a fun and smooth trip! Whether you’re traveling alone or with friends, these tips will help you make the most of your adventure.

67. Finally, Father’s Day came. Fred and Belle started decorating the house. Fred cleaned the living room and continued with the decoration, putting up the colorful balloons and presenting the birthday cake. At the same time, Belle took out the family picture. They were about to practice singing the poem when the delicious smell came from the kitchen. Surely, it was Mom that prepared the big meal. French toast and chicken porridge, both of which were father’s favorite foods, were ready. Eventually, everything was settled. Fred and Belle stood beside the door, waiting for their father eagerly. Soon Dad came in.
Fred and Belle were very excited to see their father. They cried out together, “Happy Father’s Day!” and then sang the poem loudly. Hearing the words and the poem, so glad was Dad that his face lit up. “We have a surprise for you!” added Fred, pointing at the decorations. “I love them very much!” Dad said excitelly and gave Fred, Belle and Mom a big hug. When he saw the dinner, his eyes widened and twinkled with excitement. He couldn’t help tasting a bit of the chicken soup, explaining that it was the best dish he had ever had. Mom smiled heartily and exchanged a gentle glance with Fred and Belle. What a beautiful and sweet surprise! The room was filled with happiness.
