Recently, our school hosted the “Labour week” aimed at instilling a sense of responsibility and the value of hard work in students.
The week was packed with various activities. Monday witnessed our gardening, where we planted flowers and trees. Not long ago, Uganda used to be home to both the black and northern white rhinos (犀牛). But by the early 1980s, due to illegal hunting and trade, and political instability, native populations — once thought to number around 700 — were wiped out.
More than a decade later, an initiative to bring back the majestic animals was born, with newly formed charity Rhino Fund Uganda approaching Captain Charles Roy, former pilot and owner of Ziwa cattle ranch (農場), which they had targeted as ideal rhino habitat, with the idea that he should move the herds of cattle out, and rhino in. Roy agreed. In 2005 and 2006, six southern white rhinos were relocated to the ranch. The result is a big success: the rhino population at Ziwa is now eight times the original number, with five born in the last three months.
Wendy Roy, daughter of Captain Roy, has since taken over some of Ziwa’s management. Brought up between the UK and Uganda, she admits that she was not born a conservationist, but now, as she gets more involved, she is starting to see the magic in it.
“Sometimes in the evenings, when I see the rhinos coming near, I think, ‘Wow, this looks like the Garden of Eden,’” she says. “It’s incredible: not just rhinos but zebras, antelopes, waterbucks. It’s peaceful.” Roy believes this calm setting is one of the secrets to Ziwa’s success. Also key are the rangers who provide 24/7 protection. This stops those seeking rhino horns for the illegal wildlife trade, and it allows rangers to monitor rhino behavior, gathering detailed data that can be used to inform rhino conservation globally.
It has always been Ziwa’s central mission to raise the number of rhinos so that they can be moved from Ziwa to other national parks across the country. If the move is successful, the benefits could be significant. This will not only help to enhance biodiversity, but boost Uganda’s wildlife tourism.

For so long, busyness has become part of who we are. To be busy is to be productive, and to be productive is to be successful. We tend to think having a jam-packed calendar and flying through life at a fast speed are an effective marker of how well we are doing. But a lot of the people who live like this are not actually doing all that well. They are exhausted and overwhelmed. To tackle this, we have to slow down.
In recent times, there has been a push-back against busyness. More people are trying to find more time for themselves, and say “no” to more invites. “Slow living” enthusiasts will tell you life is better when you’re not moving so quickly. They say taking tasks one at a time, never rushing or over-filling your diary gives you the space to appreciate things as they happen. To my thinking, slow living is all about being conscious of the here-and-now, making considered decisions about how to spend your time, and enjoying the little things in life, which benefits you both physically and mentally.
For those living with chronic (慢性的) illness, slow living can be a lifeline. Hannah Hoskins suffers from severe muscle pain, and some days she only has the energy to sit up for ten minutes. “Slow living saved my life. It tells you that productivity isn’t the end goal and that as humans we need to be able to have full lives rather than working nonstop. Realizing it’s literally impossible to ‘do it all’ sets you free to decide if you actually want to do all the things you are doing.”
Hannah says that her tip for anyone trying to practice slow living is to start small. “Say ‘no’ to that thing you feel you should do, but actually fear,” she suggests. “When you realize that the world doesn’t end and people don’t hate you if you say no to things, try it again and then just keep going. The more you ask yourself — Is this something I really want to do or am I doing it because I feel I should — it becomes much easier to just stop doing things you don’t enjoy.”
