Jasper National Park saw an act of heroism on July 22. Colleen Knull, a kind volunteer firefighter, quickly
jumped into action to save people from a wildfire.
As a volunteer firefighter, Knull was well-trained and experienced. When Knull noticed thick smoke rising
from the mountainside, she knew what was happening. “My first thought was that there was a fire, so I used my
experience to read the smoke, which way the wind blew and how close it was,” she later said.
Before all the people were ordered to evacuate (撤離), Knull was already in action. She rushed to a nearby
hotel and knocked on doors one by one to warn the visitors. “Please be careful! There’s a fire coming. Get ready to
evacuate,” she told each person she met. Then, Knull remembered that there was a hiker campground not far away.
Those hikers might have no idea about the danger. Without thinking twice, she set off on foot. The path was dusty,
and the air was getting hotter as she got closer to the campground. When she arrived, she started searching for the
hikers and guided them to safety.
Rebecca Tocher, one of the hikers in Knull’s group, later described the terrible conditions. “It was really scary.
Smoke was everywhere, and ash (灰) was falling all the time like a dark, dirty snow. It was hard to see clearly,” she
said. “But luckily, we had Knull. She was an excellent leader and made sure that everyone was working together.
She kept us calm and organized.”
Knull kept in touch with the search team and police all the time to help with the evacuation. She knew the
roads well, so she could pick the fastest way. At last, she saved all 16 tourists. No one was seriously hurt.
This experience left a deep impression on Knull. She said, “This event made me truly eager to become a
full-time firefighter. I want to be able to help more people in the future. I saw how much of a difference I could

Artificial intelligence (人工智能), or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to
think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.

world. Chinese police use this technology to identify criminals (罪 犯 ). Once they caught a criminal when he
attended a concert.

what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driverless car is yielding (讓路), it will flash two white lights side
to side. A rapidly flashing light tells people that the car is about to speed up.
To see how powerful AI is, just look at the service robots in hospitals and restaurants, but imagine this—you
come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, he teaches
you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future,
more and more service robots will become good home helpers.

Dear students,
How time flies! Looking back at these past three years, I have improved a lot.
I used to be very shy and was afraid of expressing myself in public. But with the encouragement from my
teachers, I not only become more outgoing but also get on well with all the people around me. Besides, I often learn
from my classmates so I have made great progress in my study. However, I also wasted much valuable time in
playing computer games. What’s worse, I couldn’t really understand my parents, always talking back to them
loudly.
Now, everything has changed. I make a decision to spend more time doing outdoor activities instead of
playing games. Also, I’ll study harder in senior high to make my parents proud of me as well as to serve the people
better in the future. I believe that my dream will come true.
Good luck!
