Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogy (三部曲). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad ” He tearfully asked me.
The story is set on a remote island, where a robot named Roz learns to survive and communicate with the island’s creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered on his own; the first to impact him with the mix of tragedy and joy.
When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our book club discussion, he described how Brown’s pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final scenes, where Roz leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. His previous reading experiences had cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this book introduced him to the beauty of complex emotions. I tried to explain how sadness can enhance the meaning of happy moments, but failed to fully convince him.
Once our discussion ended, Henry requested to buy The Wild Robot Escapes and instantly fell in love with it. He read the first two books repeatedly, so you can imagine his excitement when we finally got a copy of The Wild Robot Protects.
We both agree it is worth the wait. Roz leaves the island again to stop an underwater threat: “the poison tide.” Brown expertly balances between breathtaking adventure and unsettling ideas- not just happiness and sadness, but also, given the climate-change undercurrents, hope and despair.
And, here’s something special about Roz: her physical clumsiness and confusion about life, conveyed through her expressive eyes and down-turned mouth. Her story reflects the challenges of surviving in a strange place, much like a child’s journey. Readers love Roz. They learn from her. Even better, they learn alongside her. Roz gave Henry the power to push through the first book’s sad parts, getting him ready to appreciate that, sometimes, sadness isn’t a bad thing to feel.

At dusk and dawn, the sky dances with three phases of in-between light. When the sun has just set in the west, the sky changes from the vibrant blue of afternoon to a more relaxed tone, as if it’s settling down for the evening. The first that occurs after sunset is called civil twilight, so named because when the sun is just below the horizon, the sky is still bright enough for people to conduct typical “daytime” outdoor activities. This is also when you’re likely to see the most colors in the sky toward the west. Those same molecules (微粒) that distribute sunlight don’t do so randomly; the angle of distributing depends on the color of the light. All the blue light from the sun is sent away in all directions,leaving only the redder colors to shine through, thus creating those breathtaking sunsets.
The next phase is nautical twilight, when the sun is between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon. The sky maybe a deep purple, and stars begin to appear. The term “nautical twilight” came about because sailors used the stars to get their bearings, and it’s at this time of the early evening that celestial navigation (天文導航) becomes possible.
After that comes astronomical twilight. This is when the sun is 12 to 18 degrees below the horizon and the sky finally appears black, with the stars truly shining. We call it astronomical twilight because it may look dark to your eye, but through a telescope, the sky is still bright enough to intervene in some observations.

Electric vehicles (EV) are a key component of the global shift toward sustainable energy, but a new study highlights a significant challenge: the refining (提純) of critical minerals for EV batteries could lead to pollution hotspots near manufacturing centers.
The study reveals that fully domesticating the supply chains for EV production could drive national sulfur dioxide (SO ) emissions up by as much as 20% compared to current levels. Most of these emissions would stem from the refining and production of nickel and cobalt (鎳和鈷), essential materials for modern EV batteries.
The researchers argued that if left unaddressed, pollution from battery manufacturing will become an increasingly global challenge as EV adoption rates rise. Even if some countries were to outsource battery manufacturing, without strategies to reduce SO emissions, they would simply be offloading the problem to another country.
For countries like India who is in the early stages of supply chain development, the lowest-hanging fruit would be to focus first on cleaning up pollution from the power sector. This would require enforcing stricter SO pollution control measures for thermal power plants, using mature technologies like flue-gas desulfurization. For others, which already have strict emissions control s for the power sector, the focus needs to shift to mitigating SO emissions from the battery manufacturing process.
In addition to their policy recommendation for proactive air pollution standards, which would likely happen at the national or subnational level, the researchers also examined how changing the battery chemistry in EV could avoid unwanted SO emissions at a more global scale. While most EV batteries today rely on cobalt and nickel, the rise of alternative chemistries that use iron and phosphate (磷 酸 鐵 鋰 電 池 ) could circumvent some of the concerns associated with mining and refining nickel and cobalt.
In all events, the findings serve as a reminder to keep people at the top of mind when designing decarbonization plans, as even the most promising technologies could come with unwanted and unintended consequences.

M: How can we politely remind them to go home I am afraid the neighbors would complain about it.

W: How long will you be staying in the U. S.
M: For 10 days. I'll fly back to Beijing on April 27th.
W: Will you do any traveling during your stay here
M: Yes, I will fly to Pennsylvania right after the conference. I finished my college there and I want to visit some of my professors. I haven't seen them since I went back to Beijing.
W: Do you have anything to declare
M: I'd like to declare two laptops.
W: Are you a computer engineer
M: No. My company makes laptops and I am responsible for financing. These are our latest products.
W: All right, Mr. Lee. You are good to go. Thank you for your cooperation and enjoy your trip in the U. S.

This is Jack Miller with your weekend weather. You can put away your umbrella because it looks like the rain finally stops in time for a great weekend. The temperature today, Friday, reaches a high of 28 degrees. We’ll have a wind from the north later this day and the low temperature will drop to 10 degrees tonight. So don’t forget to put on more clothes. Tomorrow, the high and low temperatures will be about the same as today. On Sunday, we can expect a few high clouds in the early morning but lots of sunshine till noon. For those of you planning to go boating on the lake, you should have very good weather until late on Sunday afternoon when the wind is expected to increase. So please pay attention to the weather forecast just in case you need to return to land. We’ ll be back at 9 am tomorrow. Have a good weekend!
