As humans,we almost always want to land the next promotion or the next big raise,or to strike it rich in some other way.Now a new study offers hope to those of us who have yet to become rich suddenly.
Researchers from the University of Cambridge analyzed close to 77,000 financial transactions (交易) completed by 625 consumers in the UK over six months. The transactions were sorted into 59 groups that matched with different personality characteristics, such as openness to a new experience or if someone is self-controlled or easy-going.The participants were also judged as to their personality types and how happy they were with their lives.According to the study, extroverts (性格外向者) spent about $60 more a year at clubs than introverts. And people who were mindful of their health spent about $140 more a year on health and fitness than people who were less concerned with health.
Researchers then conducted a second experiment where people were given money and required to spend it in a certain way.Extroverts who were required to spend their money at a club, where they would be able to socialize, were more satisfied with their experience than introverts who were sent to clubs. And introverts who were asked to spend their cash at a bookstore were happier than extroverts who were sent to bookstores.
Some people with low incomes may not have enough extra cash to worry about whether their spending matches their personality or other goals. To be honest, having more money on hand can make life a little easier.Once the basics like food and shelter are taken care of,people may be more likely to spend the income meeting some of their other goals and needs.
When you do have extra cash, the lesson is that it pays to think carefully about what you’re really trying to accomplish, according to Sandra Matz, one of the study authors.“Oftentimes we just buy stuff our friends have or that our impulsiveness(沖動) leads us to buy,” she said.“What we should do instead is ask ourselves whether spending money on a certain product will actually help us to lead the lifestyle that we want to lead.”
4.What do the results of the transactions analysis imply
A.Extroverts make more money than introverts.
B.Spending choices reflect individual personalities.
C.British consumers exhibit daring spending behavior.
D.An individual’s personality affects their level of happiness.
5.What is the purpose of the second experiment
A.To compare extroverts’ spending habits with introverts.
B.To confirm the personality-spending satisfaction link.
C.To prove money can indeed buy happiness.
D.To observe if free money goes faster.
6.Which statement best reflects the view in paragraph 4
A.Personalities influence spending habits the most.
B.Low-income people are hesitant to show their needs.
C.High-income people tend to spend money impulsively.
D.Sufficient income permits personality-based spending.

Professor Dallas Smythe first described commercial media as a system for delivering audiences to advertisers. This perception of the viewing public as a “market” for products as well as an audience for advertising reflects the economic preference of the current media system in America. The unplanned side effects of advertising, however, concern many critics (評論家).
Dinar Godrej holds the view that advertising creates an attack on our senses, that advertising can act as a “compulsive liar”,and that the disorder advertising creates attacks us with images and ideas that result in a cultural change that creates desires for goods that only the wealthy can actually get. This author takes the point of view that there is really nothing positive that advertising contributes to a society, and that just about everything about advertising is negative.
John Calfee addresses many of these issues but also focuses on how the information in ads benefits consumers. He takes the position that advertising functions in the public’s interest, and that even the argument about ads can be beneficial because they can result in competitive pricing for consumers. He also states that individuals can learn about important issues (such as health) through ads.
There are also more neutral (中立的) views, such as those held by people who see it as an economic engine to deliver “free” programs to people,or the idea that advertising is an art form in itself.Whatever the perspective, one thing is true:Advertising can have both obvious and potential (潛在的) impact. It can be defended on solid ground and criticized on solid ground.
8.Why does Dinar Godrej think advertising can be a “compulsive liar”
A.It creates disorder in our body.
B.It is full of images and ideas.
C.It changes our feelings for goods.
D.It creates goods for the wealthy.
9.What are the benefits of advertising according to John Calfee
A.It helps control prices.
B.It decreases public’s interest.
C.It avoids arguments.
D.It is good for people’s health.
10.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Few people hold neutral views on advertising.
B.We can not see all the impact of advertising.
C.Advertising encourages us to learn about art.
D.Advertising is seldom criticized by people.
11.What is the author’s attitude toward advertising
A.Positive. B.Objective.
C.Doubtful. D.Subjective.

How to Make a Personal Budget in Several Steps
Though making a budget may not sound like the most exciting activity,it’s an important part of keeping your financial house in order. 1 If you spend less in one area, you can spend more in another.
Gather your financial paperwork. Before you begin, gather up all your financial statements, including bank statements, investment accounts, credit card bills and so on.You want to have access to any information about your income and expenses. One of the keys to the budget-making process is to create a monthly average. 2
Calculate your income. 3 If your income is in the form of a regular paycheck where taxes are automatically deducted (扣除),then using the net income (or take-home pay) amount is fine.If you are self-employed or have outside sources of income, such as child support or social security, include these as well.Record this total income as a monthly amount.
4 Write down a list of all the expenses you expect to have during a month.
Determine fixed and variable expenses. Fixed expenses are those mandatory (法定的) expenses that you pay the same amount for each time, including rent payments, car payments,set-fee Internet service and so on. 5 For example, you need to spend on groceries, gasoline, entertainment, eating out and gifts.
Make adjustments to expenses. If your expenses are far above your income, you may need to reduce your fixed expenses and increase your income to balance your budget.
A.Create a list of monthly expenses.
B.That’s because budgets rely on balance.
C.Total your yearly income and expenses.
D.How much income can you expect each month
E.The more information you can dig up,the better.
F.But you are not sure how much you spend in each category.
G.Variable expenses are the type that will change from month to month.
