An earthquake is one of the most common natural disasters. It may cause great damage. So it is wise to learn some simple safety tips to protect yourself or your family members.
Fragile items, like those made of glass should usually be placed on a lower surface, near the ground instead of placing them on cupboards higher up.Never place them near your bed, sofas and other furniture where you would be sitting or lying down. When there is a strong movement, these pieces will fall on the floor directly and not on you.
There is a strong chance of short circuits (短路) and fire outbreaks during an earthquake.Make sure you turn off electrical connections and gas immediately when an earthquake happens.
During an earthquake, lie beneath an object that is not easily damaged.Do not go near objects that could directly fall on you.Never use the elevator to go down.Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside.Research has shown that most injuries happen when people inside buildings try to go out.Use the staircases at all times.
If you are outdoors,do not take shelter under a tree, streetlights, electric poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop your car and stay in a safe place.Do not park your car under a tree or any tall object.
If trapped in debris (瓦礫堆),cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can find you.Use a whistle (哨子) if it is available.Never shout for help.Shouting can cause you to breathe in dangerous amounts of dust.Do not light a match because you may burn yourself.Do not move about or kick up dust.

Wild animals seem to have escaped the Indian Ocean tsunami, adding weight to the idea that they have a “sixth sense” for disasters, experts said on Thursday.
Sri Lanka wildlife officials have said the waves that killed over 24,000 people along the Indian Ocean island’s coast seemingly missed wild beasts, with no dead animals found.
“No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit.I think animals can sense disaster. They have a ‘sixth sense’.They know when things are happening,”H.D.Ratnayake,director of Sri Lanka’s Wildlife Department, said on Wednesday.
The waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km (2 miles) inland at Yala National Park in the southeast,Sri Lanka’s biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants.“There has been a lot of evidence about dogs barking or birds migrating before volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. But it has not been proved,” said Matthew van Lierop,an animal behaviour specialist at Johannesburg Zoo.“There have been no specific studies because you can’t really test it in a lab or field setting,” he said.Other authorities agreed with this conclusion.
“Wildlife seems to be able to pick up certain signs, especially birds. There are many reports of birds detecting coming disasters,”said Clive Walker, who has written several books on African wildlife.
Animals certainly rely on the known senses such as smell or hearing to avoid danger such as predators. The idea of an animal’s “sixth sense” is a lasting one that the evidence on Sri Lanka’s damaged coast is likely to add to.
5.What happened after the Indian Ocean tsunami
A.Many people died but wild animals survived.
B.The “six sense” of wild animals developed.
C.Wild beasts were killed or went missing.
D.The coast was found in good condition.
6.What does H.D.Ratnayake do
A.He is a zoo keeper.
B.He is a wildlife official.
C.He is a movie director.
D.He is an animal behaviour expert.
7.What is the text mainly about
A.Why animals can save themselves from natural disasters.
B.The different opinions about animals’ natural power.
C.How to protect wildlife when disasters happen.
D.The serious damage of the Indian Ocean tsunami.
8.In which section of a newspaper can we read this text
A.Travel. B.Custom.
C.Culture. D.Discovery.

Dear Peter,
I’m grateful because you’re concerned about the flood in China. And I am writing to tell you what we do while facing disasters.
As we all know,China is a vast country where natural disasters happen frequently.Whenever a disaster happens, the Chinese government will take many measures to save people and reduce losses.Firstly, rescuers as well as rescue materials will be sent to the disaster area.Secondly, soldiers and doctors will be organised to help rescue the people in the disaster area right after the disaster happens, and many medical rescue materials will be sent there, which will absolutely contribute a lot to the rescue work.Besides, various companies and people from all over the country will donate money and materials voluntarily to provide some help.
That is how we face natural disasters as a big family.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
