When we think of 10-year-old girls,the first things that come to mind may be ballet,kitchen science experiments and crazy photo faces.There’s a special bond between young girls and their moms before life fills up with more demanding schoolwork,career choices and the stress of being a grown-up.
For Joyce Phillips,taking on adult emotions came sooner than expected.Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when Joyce was 10 years old.The thought of losing her mother at such a young age must have been troubling Joyce.But instead of waiting out the process on the sidelines,Joyce decided to join the fight against cancer so that other kids wouldn’t have to experience the pain she was going through.
Joyce loves to sew.She wanted to make something to sell and also advertise her need for help.While trying to piece together a solution,she hit upon the ubiquitous coffee cup.People everywhere seem to be on the go in the morning with their cup of take-out coffee.So Joyce designed a coffee cup sleeve and created her non-profit Cozys for the Cure.It was a hit.Today,Joyce has raised over $120,000 to help fund breast cancer research.It all started with a desire to help.She lets us know each of us has the ability to make a difference,no matter how old or how young.

The African Children’s Choir(合唱團) is made up of children who are 7 to 10 years old from Africa.They have incredible voices and spirit that amaze the audience everywhere they go!
And they go to a lot of places,all around the world.And not only do they travel a lot,but they perform with some superstar singers and celebrities for heads of state.But this is not what makes the choir so special.
Like New York’s PS22,they do not just sing,but truly put their hearts,souls and bodies into their words.But what is unique about the choir is that it offers hope,education and confidence to children who live in extreme poverty.For example,the kids in the choir are mostly from the poorest countries in the world,such as Uganda.Many children live in one-room homes and walk more than 2 miles to get water for their family.Most of the children have lost one or both of their parents because of wars or diseases.
Through its music and education,the African Children’s Choir changes the lives of its children.It allows them to see the world.It gives them hope and confidence.It shows them that everything is possible.The choir even pays for their education through college.In 30 years,it has educated and changed the lives of over 50,000 children.And,in turn,the children return to their hometowns with new thoughts and new skills to help improve their family and community.These children are truly helping to build a better Africa.

What makes a person a giver or a taker The idea of “give vs. take” takes shape in all interactions(互動) and relationships of our lives.We’re either giving advice,making time for people,or we’re on the receiving end.We keep changing between the two based on different situations on a daily basis,if not an hourly one.
According to Adam Grant,a professor at the University of Pennsylvania,most people are matchers.They make careful observations on takers and make it a point for them to pay something back.They hate to see people who act so generously towards others not receive any rewards.Actually,most matchers will try hard to improve and support givers so that they can get the good they deserve.
Is there a gender factor that plays a part in this
A study led by Hannah Riley Bowles,a professor at Harvard University,focused on this question.She asked 200 senior managers to sit down in pairs where one person would act as the boss and the other as an employee to discuss a salary rise.Male“employees” asked for an average salary of $146,000,while the females asked for only $141,000.But why did they not bargain as hard as the men Simply because they were more likely to be givers.
As a woman,I do enjoy the act of giving up my time,my knowledge,and my care and attention to others.I expect nothing in return,but I do tend to pull myself away when I feel like I’m being taken for granted.I also tend to get upset when I see a loved one’s continuous actions of kindness go unnoticed.So,it’s safe to say I’m 50% giver,35% matcher and 15% taker.
I do know someone,however,who is 99% giver.They’re continually devoting their time,sharing valuable insights and going out of their way for everyone who crosses their path.Although they’ve changed the lives of many people,they hardly see any of it returned.But the universe is slowly repaying them;they’re now extremely successful,well known for what they do.

Voluntourism
Volunteering to help people in need combined with travelling to faraway places is a new trend in the travel industry.It is called voluntourism.People travel to other countries,learn languages and gain new experiences.　36

Fast forward to my last day in Bucharest,I was taking the bus to Bucharest Airport.When the bus arrived,I got on and could not find the ticket machine as the bus was inundated(淹沒) with people.People were standing like sardines in a can.I made my way towards the center of the bus with my big backpack and found the ticket machine to be the same as the one I had encountered on my first day in Bucharest.I tried every method.Nothing worked.I started to panic.

Many people do have a great influence on me,but I think no one can be compared with my mother.
It is my mother who teaches me to be curious,kind,optimistic and persistent.Whenever I come across someone in need,I’m willing to give a helping hand within my ability.When I encounter difficulties in life,I always have a positive attitude and constantly seek for approaches to addressing them.
She is not only my mother,but also my life mentor.Nothing that I learned from my mother has ever left me.Indeed,she is just the person affecting me greatly.

At that moment,a kind middle-aged man standing next to me handed me a card.Even though I could not read the writing that was on the card and he didn’t speak much English,I eventually understood that it was a card for the bus.I hesitated for a moment and he smiled and nodded to me.The man paid for my bus ride.
I tried to pay him,but he just refused.This unexpected act of kindness from this total stranger truly made me feel very emotional.I didn’t even know his name and we may never meet each other again.Yet,he stood out when a stranger was in trouble and offered his generosity.I was deeply moved by his act of kindness and I thanked him sincerely.I will not forget that day and that gentleman for the rest of my life.
