Scientists say they’ve developed a system using machine learning to predict when and where lightning will strike.The research was led by engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland.
European researchers have estimated between 6,000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year.The strikes can also cause power outages(停電),destroy property,damage electrical equipment and start forest fires.For these reasons,climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict and control lightning.But no system has been created to effectively predict lightning.
The system tested in the experiments used a combination of data from weather stations and machine learning methods.The researchers developed a prediction model that was trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning.
The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas.The data related to four main surface conditions:air pressure,air temperature,relative humidity(濕度) and wind speed.
The atmospheric data was placed into a machine learning algorithm(算法),which compared it to records of lightning strikes.Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
Amirhossein Mostajabi is a PhD student at the institute who led the development of the method.He said,“Current systems for gathering such data are slow and complex and require costly collection equipment like radar or satellites.”
“Our method uses data that can be obtained from any weather station,” Mostajabi said.“This will improve data collection in very remote areas not covered by radar and satellites or in places where communication systems have been cut,” he added.

A storm hit Houston,Texas,on Tuesday.It brought heavy rains and rising floodwaters.By Tuesday night,some parts of the city had received 10 inches of rain.Police and firefighters helped people move to safe places.They also saved people from cars and buses that were stuck on roads.

A spokesman for the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management said that this week’s rain “is not in any way a Harvey-level event”.
But the worst may not be over yet.People will have a break from the heavy rain on Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service,the Texas Gulf Coast will continue to experience heavy rain later in the week.“Today should be our quietest over the next few days for rainfall,”said Don Oettinger,a National Weather Service meteorologist(氣象學家).

The worsening air quality in tropical cities is causing ever greater threats to people’s health and this trend will only get worse as the urbanization is progressing quickly,scientists have warned.In a newly published study,a team of researchers explain that across all the 46 cities they surveyed from Africa to Asia,they have measured significant annual increases in pollutants harmful to health.
This trend is troubling as tropical cities usually lack proper air pollution monitoring measures and policies to deal with the problem.“These cities are predicted to reach populations of up to 80 million people by 2100,so actions targeting human-related pollution are badly needed,” the scientists stress.
Already the number of people dying prematurely(過早地) from long exposure to air pollution has been on the increase and people living in cities in South Asia are the worst affected.In Dhaka,Bangladesh,some 24,000 people die of such causes each year while around 100,000 people die in Indian cities such as Mumbai,Bangalore etc.
“The number of deaths in tropical cities in Africa is still lower due to recent improvements in health care there.But the worst effects of air pollution on health will likely occur in the coming decades,” the scientists say.
The reasons for worsening air quality in tropical cities lie in increasing road traffic,waste burning,and the widespread use of coal and wood.Industry is also partly to blame.“Open burning for land clearance in the past contributed most to air pollution in the tropics,” explains Karn Vohra,an author of the study.“Our analysis suggests we’re entering a new age when some cities experience rates of air pollution in a year that others experience in a decade,” Vohra warns.

I tried opening my door with a sharp pain in the chest.In addition,my left ankle had been broken.Gabe had broken his nose and cheek,as well as his chest bone,leaving him blind in his left eye and having difficulty in breathing.
As the doors were crashed out of shape,and my window failed to be opened,the only way out was through the driver’s side window.Although it was difficult and painful,we both managed to get out of it.

New research carried out by Yale University shows that people who read a lot live longer.The researchers said reading keeps the mind active,helps reduce stress and makes us take better care of our health.The researchers said that books help the brain more than newspapers and magazines,but any kind of reading will help us to live longer.In the study,researchers looked at the lifestyles of 3,500 men and women over a 12-year period.They looked at their reading habits,health,lifestyle and their education.All of the people were at least 50 years old at the start of the research.
The study found that people who read for up to 3.5 hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die during the study’s 12-year research period than those who read no books.Those who read for more than 3.5 hours a week were 23 percent less likely to die.Researcher Becca Levy said,“Individuals over the age of 65 spend an average of 4.4 hours per day watching television.Efforts to redirect leisure time into reading books could prove to be beneficial.”

We sat on a rock with no phone signal,realizing all we could do was shout for help.Because of the pain,we could only yell from time to time.After what seemed a century,someone responded.Four bystanders had spotted our car and were wading through the mud to us.We showed great excitement.Once they arrived,two of them helped Gabe climbing up the hill.Because of my injured foot,the other two had to carry me.Sinking into the mud made it even tougher.
With the help of them,we finally reached the highway at around 8:00 p.m.Gabe was in shock.He kept slipping in and out of consciousness.They kept shocking him to keep him awake so he wouldn’t slip into a coma.When the medical helicopter finally came and airlifted us to the nearest hospital,they left without a word.The experience bounded us as a couple and made us even more positive to life.And the kindness of the strangers will always remain in our hearts.
