Bookstores are amazing places. But when your community is too small to house a real bookstore, sometimes you have to be creative. A mobile bookstore that brings books around the country was the result.
That is the case for Rita Collins, who dreamed of opening a used bookstore after she retired from teaching. However, Eureka, Montana, located just seven miles from the Canadian border, only has a population of about 1,500. Given this, she had to give it up. Later, while attending a business planning class from the American Booksellers Association, Collins asked her instructors about a traveling bookstore on wheels but they were doubtful. This time she didn’t give up.
Collins was inspired by Dylans Mobile Bookstore, a traveling bookstore in Wales run by Jeff Towns. She contacted Jeff for advice but she was largely on her own when it came to setting up her bookstore. First, she had to find a car which is large enough to stand in and mechanically (機械地) reliable as well as easy to drive and park. A local mechanic helped her find exactly what she needed. Then she had to have it refitted with shelves that would hold the books at a 15-degree angle (角度) so that they would stay in place while in transportation.
Collins named her bookstore St. Rita’s Amazing Traveling Bookstore and Textual Apothecary. It has been on the road since 2015. For the first two years, St. Rita’s was only a summer project. At first, she drove through Montana and then she made her first cross-country trip across the U. S. in 2016. After she retired in 2017, it became a full-time project from spring to fall. Till now, Collins and her 600-volume traveling bookstore have visited 30 states, benefiting countless people along the way.
While Collins loves what she does, she doesn’t think she can always keep doing it. In a couple of years, she hopes to pass her traveling bookstore on to another book lover who will keep it on the road.
4. What discouraged Collins from opening a used bookstore in Eureka
A. Lack of enough readers. B. Lack of start-up money.
C. Disbelief from instructors. D. Failure to find a place.
5. What inspired Collins to start a mobile bookstore
A. Her teaching experience.
B. A travelling bookstore in Wales.
C. Advice from her business class instructors.
D. The support of her local community.
6. What was Collins’ requirement of her car
A. It should be fancy and colorful. B. It should be cost-saving.
C. It should be practical and safe. D. It should be environmentally friendly.
7. What is a suitable title for the text

Inside an amazing show center in Beijing, a two-armed robot is busy making sugar paintings. Its smooth movements attract a crowd of visitors. The robot is acting as a “skilled worker” of this traditional art of Beijing. But the machine also acts as both a witness (見證) to and a guide for the increasing mix of fields of knowledge that come from different places. This mix challenges the limits of time and geography.
At the show, hundreds of experts from home and abroad are considering the relationship between cultural heritage and new technologies. For many, the promotion of traditional culture is one of the areas in which technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) can play a key role.
“AI helps pass on culture,” said Guo Chunchao, head of Tencent’s Hunyuan Text to 3D project. Yu Minjing, a teacher at Tianjin University, agreed with him. She led her team to use VR technology to conduct a firework show and make traditional Hanfu clothes. “With AI, the inheritance (傳承) of traditional culture can solve the limits of space and geography, which helps traditional skills that used to be taught by talking, to be spread more widely and better,” she said.
“The mix of AI technology with VR, 3D and other technologies has also helped create cloud walking-around experiences, attracting young people to traditional culture,” Guo said.
However, some experts warned that while technology is important for preservation, it’s even more important to think about the people in the process.
Renata Sansone, from Italy, said that some archaeological sites are very difficult for everybody to understand, but the use of technologies may make a difference in getting more people involved and playing their part in protection. Many Chinese experts agree with her. Yu Minjing thinks that saving and passing on cultural relics should focus on people. How much people like and accept it is very important for protecting cultural relics well.
8. Why is the robot mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To introduce the challenges the robot faces.
B. To call for people to protect traditional cultures.
C. To praise sugar paintings’ role in cultural protection.
D. To show a new function of technology in traditional culture.
9. What is the main reason for Yu Minjing’s team using AI and VR technologies
A. Solving space problems in culture sharing.
B. Making new technologies develop well.
C. Attracting more young people to their show.
D. Taking the place of old teaching methods.
10. Which of the following statements would Renata Sansone agree with
A. Schools will play a key role in cultural protection.
B. Archaeological sites are best explored with technology.
C. It’s important to make the public join in cultural protection.
D. Cloud walking-around has become a major way to experience culture.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. The Popular Rise of Robot Artists
B. The Role of Technology in Cultural Protection
C. The Influence of AI on Cultural Exchange
D. The Future Development of Traditional Skills

Stories have long been employed to instill (逐漸灌輸) moral and cultural values in young children, but there is little research exploring the effectiveness of such stories.
“As parents, we want to know how effective the classic moral stories actually are in promoting honesty,” says co-author Victoria Talwar of McGill University. “Do the message go in one ear and out the other, or do children listen and take the messages to heart ”
To find out, the researchers conducted an experiment with 268 children aged 3 to 7. Each child played a game that required guessing the identity of a toy based on the sound it made. In the middle of the game, the experimenter left the room for a minute, telling the child not to glance at a toy left on the table. For most children, this temptation (誘惑) was too hard to resist. When the experimenter returned, she read the child a story, either The Tortoise and the Hare, The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Pinocchio, or George Washington and the Cherry Tree. Afterwards, the experimenter asked the child to tell the truth about whether he or she glanced at the toy.
To the experimenter’s surprise, Pinocchio and The Boy Who Cried Wolf, which related lying with negative results, were no more effective at promoting honest behavior than a fable unrelated to honesty, as is the case with The Tortoise and the Hare. Only the made-up tale about young George Washington seemed to inspire the kids to admit glancing: Children who heard the tale in which future first president was complimented because of admitting his mistake and rewarded a candy were three times more likely to tell the truth than their fellows who heard other stories.
“Our study shows that to promote moral behaviour such as honesty, stressing the positive results of honesty rather than the negative results of dishonesty is the key,” note the researchers. “This may apply to other morals as well.”
More research is necessary to determine whether moral stories influence kids’ behaviour in the long term. Still, they have been quick to take advantage of the findings. Talwar reports a shift in her own parenting practices: “It really seems to work. I use this now with my child.”
12. What is the aim of the experiment mentioned in the text
A. To find out which story is educational at school.
B. To test if the children can resist the temptation.
C. To see the effectiveness of stories in promoting honesty.
D. To ensure the precision in guessing the identity of the toy.
13. What does the underlined word “complimented” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Punished. B. Praised. C. Ignored. D. Respected.
14. What does Talwar mean in the last paragraph
A. She will apply the findings to her child.
B. Her child shows a strong interest in moral stories.
C. Her parents have changed their way of education.
D. She realized the positive influence on children.
15. Which word can describe the author’s attitude to the experiment
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Objective.

The classic fable “The Tortoise and the Hare” tells of a boastful hare challenging a tortoise to a race. Confident in his speed, the hare soon stops to nap while the tortoise plods on steadily. When the hare wakes, he finds the tortoise has crossed the finish line first.
This story carries a profound moral: persistence triumphs over pride. The hare’s overconfidence leads to his downfall, while the tortoise’s unwavering determination secures victory. In life, we often encounter challenges where talent alone isn’t enough—consistent effort matters more. Whether in studies or sports, haste and arrogance can blind us to the value of steady progress. The tale reminds us that humility and perseverance are keys to success, urging us to stay focused and never underestimate the power of small, consistent steps.
Through its simple plot, the fable delivers a timeless message that resonates across generations, making it a cherished lesson for all.
