Tonka, the famous chimpanzee who starred in 1990s films like George of the Jungle and Buddy, recently had a heartwarming reunion with his son, Cayleb, at the Save the Chimps Shelter in Florida. After years of separation, the father and son are now enjoying freedom and family bonding at the shelter.
Tonka, who will soon turn 33, was rescued by Save the Chimps after a long legal battle with his former owner, Haddix. Haddix, who had been keeping Tonka in her Missouri basement, was forced to give him up in 2022 after failing to meet certain living condition standards set by a court. Before this, Tonka had been transferred between facilities, including the Missouri Primate Foundation, after aging out of Hollywood roles.
Cayleb, like his father, was bred for the entertainment industry. However, once he became too strong to manage, he was sent to the Wildlife Waystation in California, which closed in 2019. With the help of the Chimpanzees In Need program, Cayleb was transferred to Save the Chimps, where he found new friends and a safe environment.
The shelter provides a peaceful setting for the chimps to live out their lives. Spanning 150 acres, Save the Chimps allows its residents to enjoy the outdoors, interact with other chimps, and receive care. Initially nervous, Cayleb adapted quickly to his new surroundings, playing with a fellow chimp named Jacob.
According to Dan Mathews, director of events at Save the Chimps, Tonka is thriving in his new environment after spending decades in subpar living conditions. Mathews noted that the once-unhealthy chimp is now fit and enjoying hi "second act" of life surrounded by a group of 17 other chimpanzees. There's a large number of questions and concerns about the appearance of eggs. Any slight cloud, strange white wrinkles, different colored shell, or red spots, and we take pause. In fact, they're all perfectly safe to eat, and don't even substantially change the taste.
One odd occurrence: Seeing a completely white or incredibly light-yellow yolk (蛋黃). Often, it is enough to drive you to Google search or call your mom to double-check if it's OK to consume. The good news is that you don't need to throw away that fried egg from the pan. Coming across a white yolk is perfectly natural, though it's a little rare in the United States.
The color of your egg yolk depends on the feed of the chickens. In the U. S., chickens typically eat a diet of yellow corn, and the pigments (色素) from the plant make their way into the egg yolks. Those pigments are also what give chicken skin and fat its yellowish color. If the chicken happens to eat more white corn than yellow, the yolk will be paler as well.
If you've traveled overseas, you've probably noticed that the color of yolks varies widely across the globe. Again, this difference comes down to what the chickens are eating. In many African countries, for example, chickens typically have a diet of mostly sorghum, a grain with much less yellow pigmentation than yellow corn, resulting in lighter, or completely white yolks. In South American countries, you will notice pink, blood orange, or almost reddish yolks, because their chicken feed is rich in red seeds.
In the U. S., many people falsely associate darker yolks with happier hens or higher nutrition. Farmers can easily manipulate (操控) the chicken feed to include carrots, alfalfa (苜蓿) powder, or red seeds to determine the color of their chickens' eggs.

Companies have been switching from plastic straws to paper ones on the grounds of being more environmentally friendly. However, new research suggests the good-intentioned trend might not be the best alternative after all.
The study found the vast majority of paper straws tested contained monly referred to as "forever chemicals," PFAS don't break down in the body or in the environment.
"Straws made from plant-based materials, such as paper and bamboo, are often advertised as being more sustainable and eco-friendly than those made from plastic," said Thimo Groffen, author of the study. "However, the presence of PFAS in these straws means that's not necessarily true."
Researchers on the study examined 39 brands of straws in Belgium from supermarkets, toy stores, fast-food chains, drug stores and e-commerce stores. The straws were either made of paper, bamboo, glass, stainless steel or plastic, and the researchers tested each brand for concentrations of PFAS.69% of the brands contained PFAS, with paper straws more likely to contain the chemicals. The researchers found 90% of paper straws had PFAS, compared to 80% of bamboo straws, 75% of plastic straws, and 40% of glass straws. Further, a paper straw brand was the brand with the highest PFAS concentration.
Small amounts of PFAS do not pose a risk. However, a build-up of the chemicals in the body may cause dangerous health problems like liver damage, increased blood pressure, and certain cancers.
"The presence of PFAS in paper and bamboo straws shows they are not necessarily biodegradable (可生物降解的)," said Groffen. "We did not detect any PFAS in stainless steel straws, so I would advise consumers to use this type of straw—or just avoid using straws at all."
