Cai Lei, former vice-president of JD Group, reveals how amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis (診斷) set him on the path to find a cure.
Born to a farmer’s family in 1978, Cai has been deeply influenced by his father’s idea that “one has to fight for himself”. Since primary school, he has been getting up before 5 am to run and study English. At 29, Cai became chief tax manager in Vanke Co. In 2011, he joined JD Group, where he led his team to develop the first electronic invoice (發票) in China. Wherever he worked, he always tried his best to create new value.
Diagnosed with ALS in 2019, he would have only two to five years to live. ALS is usually caused by the gradual death of motor neurons (神經元), which makes normally easy movements like drinking water, eating, going to the bathroom, and speaking impossible. Finally, patients will completely rely on machines and others’ help to survive. So far, only two medicines are available to treat ALS, but they can at most extend patients’ life for several months without improving their living quality.
To develop effective drugs is the only way to save ALS patients. However, the intense effort required, which is unprofitable for so rare an illness, makes it a mission almost impossible. It usually takes 10-15 years to complete the research cycle for a new drug and the cost is $1-3billion. Take Alzheimer’s disease for example. Between 2000 and 2017, investment in new drugs for this more common disease was over $600 billion, and 99.6% of the research on more than 300 drugs failed.
Cai decided to take matters into his own hands. He started his own medical technology company, built his own research team, and volunteered to try more than 30 new medicines which all failed. However, he has decided that even if all efforts prove fruitless, he will continue. To shoot the last bullet, he has decided to donate his brain and spinal cord for scientific research. He will not die for nothing.
24. What kind of person is Cai Lei
A. Extremely ambitious and well-mannered. B. Quite reliable and clear-headed.
C. Highly motivated and strong-willed. D. Well informed and warm-hearted.
25. What might happen to people diagnosed with ALS
A. Maintaining a normal life by taking medicines.
B. Losing the ability to think and speak normally.
C. Needing external assistance to survive in the end.
D. Dying within months of a confirmed diagnosis.
26. Why is Alzheimer’s disease mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To prove Alzheimer to be a common disease.
B. To talk about the severity of Alzheimer.
C. To ask for more investment in the research on ALS.
D. To explain the difficulty of finding a cure for ALS.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. A man who never gives in B. Joint efforts to fight ALS
C. ASL, a rare deadly disease D. Suffering of a man with ALS

The Ig Nobel Prizes, established in 1991, are an amusing alternative to the distinguished Nobel Prizes, honoring research that “makes people laugh, then think”. The name is a clever wordplay on “ignoble”, meaning something lacking honor, reflecting the humorous and unconventional nature of the discoveries. However, beneath the foolishness often lies great scientific value, showing that curiosity can lead to significant understanding, even from seemingly insignificant questions.
The prizes draw attention to a range of odd but fascinating studies. In 2024, some researchers were awarded for demonstrating that real plants can copy the appearance of artificial ones they are planted alongside, revealing the remarkable adaptability of nature. Another 2024 study demonstrated that dead fish can swim upstream by using energy from fast-moving water currents, which could inspire energy-efficient designs in engineering. Additionally, a probability experiment involving more than 350,000 coin throws revealed that a thrown coin is more likely to land on the side it started from, offering unexpected understanding into chance and probability.
In previous years, similarly quirky studies have been honored. In 2004, one of the Ig Nobel Prizes was awarded to Jillian Clarke. She investigated the scientific soundness of the “five-second rule”, a popular belief that food dropped on the floor is still safe to eat if picked up within five seconds. Some 2006 Ig Nobel Prize winners found that female malaria mosquitoes (蚊子) are equally attracted to the smell of human feet and Limburger cheese. This research, which won the Biology Prize, suggests that these odors could be used to develop innovative mosquito control methods.
Held annually in mid-September, around the time the real Nobel Prizes are announced, the Ig Nobel Prize ceremony is a unique mixture of humor and science, where real Nobel Prize winners present the awards. The event contains a number of running jokes, including Miss Sweetie Poo, a little girl who repeatedly cries out “Please stop, I’m bored”, if speakers go on too long. Paper airplanes are traditionally thrown by the audience, adding to the funny nature of the event.
28. What is the main purpose of the Ig Nobel Prizes
A. To compete with the traditional Nobel Prizes.
B. To honor significant breakthroughs in science.
C. To inspire discoveries with entertainment value
D. To recognize funny and thought-provoking research.
29. What does the study of coin throwing reveal
A. Possibility cannot be predicted with certainty.
B. Coins tend to land on the side they start from.
C. Human belief influences the probability of a result.
D. The end result is always uncertain, with a 50/50 chance.
30. What does the underlined word “quirky” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Boring or uninteresting. B. Standard or typical.
C. Unusual or unconventional. D. Disordered or unstructured.
31. Who presents the Ig Nobel Prizes to the winners
A. Real Nobel Prize winners. B. Scientists having a sense of humor.
C. Political or social celebrities. D. Ig Nobel Prize organizers.

In the U. S., people eat more protein than they need to, which might not be bad for human health, but does pose a problem for the country’s waterways. The nation’s wastewater is loaded with the leftovers (殘留物) from protein digestion: nitrogen (氮) compounds that can feed harmful algal blooms(藻華) and pollute the air and drinking water.
Maya Almaraz, a biogeochemist at the University of California, Davis, and her team wanted to see how much of this nitrogen entered into the U. S. wastewater system because of a protein-heavy diet. The researchers found that the majority of nitrogen pollution present in wastewater—some 67 to 100 precent—is a by-product of water people consume.
Once it enters the environment, the nitrogen can have a series of ecological impacts. It helps algae grow much faster than they would normally, which is harmful to humans, other animals and plants. And when the algae eventually die, the problem is not over. Microorganisms(微生物) that feed on dead algae use up the oxygen in the water, leading to “dead zones”, where many species simply cannot survive, in rivers, lakes and oceans.
Although it is possible to treat algal blooms, many of the current methods are not always effective at getting rid of all of the harmful growth. Some of these methods can even lead to additional pollution. So the best strategy for dealing with the effects of nitrogen pollution is prevention, says Patricia Glibert, an ocean scientist at the University of Maryland. Almaraz and her team suggest that controlling nitrogen pollution could be approached more quickly with a change in eating habits that could save billions of dollars in the long term.
32. Which aspect of Americans’ diet does Almaraz’s research focus on
A.Its amount. B. Its variety. C. Its make-up. D. Its effect.
33. What causes “dead zones” in the water
A. Death of lots of healthy algae.
B. No oxygen for many species.
C. Microorganisms’ over-consumption of nutrients.
D. Poisonous chemicals released by harmful algae.
34. What is the problem with current algal bloom treatment methods
A. They are too costly. B. They are time-consuming.
C. They may cause more pollution. D. They may kill all algae.
35. What does the text mainly tell us
A. Prevention is better than cure in treating air pollution.
B. Researchers find solutions to the wastewater problem.
C. It is high time to treat wild algae growth.
D. Eating too much protein harms the planet.

On a stormy night, Tom stood by the large window of the small roadside cafe, gazing at the pouring rain and sighing. A flash of lightning cut through the sky, followed by a thunderous boom that seemed to split the night. The sound of the storm kept reminding Tom of how unpredictable life could be.
When Tom attended school, he had dreamed of becoming a doctor to help others. But life took an unexpected turn. His mother was seriously ill. To take care of her and pay for her medical expenses, he had to give up his dream and worked at the cafe during the night shift. Every night, as he served customers and cleaned up, he couldn’t help but wonder what life would have been like if his mother hadn’t fallen ill.
As Tom was seated behind the counter, lost in thought about his life’s unexpected turns, suddenly a loud crash
broke the silence of the night. Driven by curiosity or perhaps a sense of urgency, Tom rushed out of the cafe with an umbrella. There, in the dim light cast by the cafe’s sign, he found a middle-aged man lying on the wet ground nearby with a motorcycle lying next to him, its engine silent.
Tom approached cautiously. The man was struggling to move, his face twisted in pain. Mud and rainwater stained his clothes, and one of his ankles appeared to be injured. Tom quickly helped the man sit up and leaned him against the cafe wall for support.
“Sir, are you okay ” Tom asked, his voice steady but filled with concern. The man groaned (呻吟) as his hand wrapped tightly around his ankle. “I think I twisted it in the fall,” he managed to say through gritted (咬緊的) teeth.
The rain continued to pour, making the situation even more miserable. Tom knew the poor man needed help and that he had to act fast.

第一節 應用文寫作(滿分15分)
One possible version:
Dear teachers and fellow students,
I am Li Hua. It’s my honor to share my perspective on the use of artificial intelligence.
Generally speaking, there are numerous advantages to AI, such as processing information at a high speed and assisting us with complex tasks, which in turn, enhance our ability to learn and grow. Nevertheless, as we embrace these technological advances, it is crucial to be aware of the potential drawbacks. It may cause job losses as machines replace human labor in some fields. Moreover, over-reliance on AI might weaken our independent thinking and creativity.
For middle school students like us, we should use AI rationally. We can utilize educational apps as extra learning resources, but should not rely on them to complete our homework. AI should be viewed as a tool to assist our studies and life, rather than a substitute for our own efforts.
Thank you!
第二節 讀后續寫(滿分25分)
One possible version:
Putting the umbrella in the man’s hand, Tom dashed back to the cafe. He made an emergency call, providing the exact location of the accident and briefly describing the man’s situation. Then he grabbed an ice bag from the fridge and hurried back into the rain again. Gently, he applied the ice to the man’s swollen ankle, hoping to ease the swelling. To take the man’s mind off his pain, he began sharing stories about his own dream and the unexpected turn in his life. With Tom by his side, the man felt somewhat better. They both breathed a sigh of relief as the ambulance arrived, and the medical team carefully transported the man to safety.
Two days later, Tom received a card and a cheque from the man. Inside the card, the man wrote, “Thank you for your kindness and help. Hope the money can help you pursue your dream.” Holding the cheque in his hand, Tom felt tears of gratitude and joy welling up in his eyes. Never had he expected that his small act of kindness would bring him such an unexpected blessing. Through the experience, he came to understand that life is a journey filled with unexpected turns, but as long as you don’t give up, it will eventually lead to your destination.

W: That would be great. I’ve never been to Edinburgh before. I’m a little bit uneasy about it.
M: It will be fine. See you soon.
