Take the Time to Lend a Hand
By Mike McDonald
Have you ever done or thought about volunteering(志愿服務)before?Volunteering means spending time helping somebody or something. In my case,I've volunteered in an animal center to help dogs.
Back in 2021,some friends and I went to an animal center outside of Beijing. There,I was able to get close to the animals. There were not only dogs at the center, however.I saw many kinds of other animals as well, such as foxes and cats.Still, our main task was to help the dogs by giving them walks. Many of the dogs were kept in big cages(籠子)along with other dogs and ate from a big bowl together.I felt a bit sad for the dogs because many of them looked old and dirty.
So I decided to give one of the dogs a good walk.I remember it was a big black dog withcurly(卷曲的) hair. The dog was very gentle, but it did not want to walk very far.It was also a bit shy and just wanted to lie alone.Still, when I took out a tennis ball to play,it really enjoyed it.
All in all, volunteering for the animal center is helpful for both the workers and the dogs.I really enjoyed my time there. You could try volunteering at an animal center too.

5. When you wake up at night with worries going through your head,it can be hard for you to fall back to sleep.Knowing what to do can help you when worries stop you from sleeping.
It can feel like you're the only person lying awake with thoughts going around your head in the middle of the night, but it's usual.Worrying at night feels uncomfortable,so it's important that you're kind to yourself.Think about what will help you. That could be waking up an adult to tell them about your worries.
By paying attention to your body instead of your thoughts, your brain can calm down. One way to do this is to get comfortable in bed, then focusing your attention on your feet.Next, move your attention up to your lower legs, then to your body until you get to the top of your head.
If you get to the top of your head and you still can't sleep, change positions to make you comfortable again, and then slowly do the same exercise, from head to feet. This exercise takes time and you have to really pay attention,so it can help your brain stop worrying, and then you can fall asleep slowly.

7.The summer of 2023 saw record-breaking heatwaves across many parts of the world. As temperatures continue to rise, the effect of carbon emissions(碳排放)on the environment has become a big problem.Studies show the travel industry is responsible for about 10% of these emissions, with air travel alone causing about 2.8% of them.
To address this problem,Intrepid—a travel company, has suggested a "carbon passport" in its recent report. The idea behind it is that each traveler would have a yearly carbon limit, and nobody can go over that limit.Using carbon passports means travelers will have to take fewer flights to lower their "carbon footprint"—the CO2 emissions from their actions. At present, the carbon footprint of each person is about four tons yearly on average(平均).To limit temperature rise to acceptable levels by 2050,our goal should be below two tons.
In line with this goal, some European countries are taking steps to reduce air travel. In France, local flights are canceled if the same trips can be made by train in 2.5 hours or less.In Belgium, additional charges(收費)are added to short-distance flights to encourage other forms of travel.
Intrepid considers the idea of a "carbon passport" effective with more people involved in.Travelers will receive information about their carbon footprints and change their travel habits. And businesses will be pushed to use more green practices.Alex Hawkins, one of the writers of the report, says, "These passports will make us think more about how our trips influence the environment. "
When it comes to monitoring everyone's carbon emission,Anna Abelson,a professor of the New York University thinks it would be a challenge in terms of logistics (統(tǒng)計).Even if we work that out, there are still some worries. For example, people might not be able to take jobs far away or visit family in other cities as often. Some even worry about privacy and personal freedom if we start monitoring and limiting people's air travel.
"Getting everyone on board with carbon passports won't be easy. "Hawkins added, "It would need support from lots of different people and groups all over the world. " However, even with the challenges, the idea of carbon passports shows the need for us to take action together to fight climate change and make travel eco-friendlier.

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month,or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections ,plans and responsibilities,I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world.Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome(惱人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out.I tried turning notifications (通知) off.But the fear of missing out something important made me cheek the phone more often than before. So,I simply stopped using my phone.
Well,to tell the truth,it was not simple at all.For the first couple of days,I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me.When I had a free moment,I had no idea what to get myself distracted(分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone,I started noticing changes- changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all,I noticed that I became much more focused (專注的).Before, while doing something,I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone,I found that the urge (沖動) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before,I would look at it through my camera mostly:take a photo, post it,get some likes. Now,I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change.I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now,as 100 days have passed,I can say that the experiment was worth it.I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
(1) What made the writer check the phone more often than before?
______
(2) When did the writer start noticing his changes?
______
(3) What does the writer plan to do with his phone after the experiment?
______
(4) Would you like to follow the writer's example? Why or why not?( Please give two reasons. )

10. Brainstorming is a way to come up with new and smart ideas to solve difficult problems. It includes bringing together people with different views and backgrounds to share their ideas freely and build on ideas. Here are some key points to keep in mind when carrying on a brainstorming activity.
First, the group should have a clear goal for the brainstorming activity. This will help guide the discussion and make sure that all ideas created are closely connected to the topic at hand. All members should be encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas freely.
When looking at the quality of ideas from a brainstorming activity, group members had better consider how many there are and what they are about. While a large number of ideas can be beneficial,it is more important to focus on the quality of the ideas and how well they fit with the group's shared goal.
Group members need to ask for more information about an idea. This can help the group to decide if an idea fits the goal.If an idea won't work or doesn't fully meet the needs,it's important to recognize this and move on to other ideas that might work better.
Besides,it's necessary to focus on coming up with new ideas, not going over old ones.Members should be encouraged to think creatively and outside the box,and to avoid getting stuck in the details(細節(jié)).
The number of ideas is important too. While having many ideas doesn't mean success by itself,it makes sure we think about all possible ideas.Everyone should try to think of as many ideas as they can, without worrying if they will work right away.
In the end,a good brainstorming activity depends on the group's ability to work together towards a shared goal.By supporting each other's ideas and looking at their value and fit,we can find new ways to solve hard problems for everyone's benefit.Brainstorming is a powerful tool that can help us face challenges, working together for a better and more creative future.
(1) What is brainstorming? ______
(2) Why do group members need to ask for more information about an idea? ______
(3) How can people find new ways to solve hard problems for everyone's benefit in a brainstorming activity? ______
(4) Do you think brainstorming is a powerful tool to solve problems? Why or why not?(Please give two reasons.) ______

Creativity as a Way of Life
Do you want to be more creative?Does it seem hard to find the time to be creative?
The great news is that you don't have to find time in order to be creative, because being creative has nothing to do with time. You don't do creativity;you live creativity!
Creativity truly is a way of life, not an activity.Leonardo da Vinci encouraged his art students to remain artists even while outside the studio. He knew that creativity was a way of life, not a time-limited activity.
I'm never unprepared for creative ideas. When an idea occurs to me,I use my phone app to record it.In fact, some of my best ideas come to me when I'm in the shower!I leave my phone just outside the shower so that the minute I dry off I can record the ideas that arose in the steam. When I'm walking in the Central Park or sitting on a bench there,I use my phone's camera app to take photos and videos.Being creative is easier nowadays!
When I lie down to go to sleep,I think about my next day and ask myself a question related to one of my creative projects.I try to present me with a creative solution when I am awake.Creativity happens even when you're asleep!I have a notebook next to me when I sleep so that I don't lose an idea that presents itself to me when I'm still half asleep.
Being creative means that you look at things with a creative eye,not just when you're in the art studio painting,or on stage performing,or at your desk writing,or at your job thinking of solutions to a problem, but at every moment of your life.
Once you"turn on"creativity and choose it as your default(默認的) setting, you'll begin to notice when your creative ideas flow best.Is it in the shower,in nature, while driving, watching television, performing a certain job function, sitting in meetings,or on your favorite walking trail? Then make sure that you always have simple and easy-to-use tools at hand to catch ideas when they arise.Never miss an opportunity to be creative!
We can choose to live our lives as creative beings.Allow your creativity to always be"on,"rather than having it in certain times or days.
(1) What is creativity?
______
(2) When do some of the writer's best ideas come to him?
______
(3) Why does the writer have a notebook next to him when he sleeps?
______
(4) Are you creative? How can you become a creative person or a more creative one?(Please list at least two points)

13.International Volunteer Day is a day to celebrate the efforts of people who create a positive change in their communities and work selflessly to bring about peace and development for the world. On International Volunteer Day,volunteers share their experiences with volunteering and talk about its influence on their personal lives.
Sharon first started volunteering at the age of 16.It was the summer before her junior year of high school, and she hadn't really understood the meaning behind doing something for others until that day.
Sharon was going with a group to the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Dallas,Texas.RMH is a "home-away-from-home" for families so they can stay close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost.
Sharon recalls her first time walking into RMH-nervous and afraid of messing up or saying the wrong thing. After only 5 minutes, she began connecting with families. "That day,I played with kids, laughed with the adults, and heard countless stories-you name it!" says Sharon.
Now a 20-year-old student at the University of North Texas,Sharon has volunteered with RMH ever since. "I have met so many people there that have changed my life."
In January 2012,Sharon met her soon-to-be hero:Dan.Dan was a car passenger, riding with a group of friends, when the driver thought it would be cool to show off and drive fast.
The car turned over, both the driver and one of the passengers were thrown out of from the car.Dan tried to get out of the car and then began searching for others quickly. One of the passengers was still caught in her seat.Without hesitation,Dan climbed back in to save her.
In doing so,he somehow managed to get himself stuck and caught fire.Although he was able to rescue himself, his skin was so badly burned that he had to take lots of surgeries (手術).Sharon helped care for Dan during his stay at RMH,helping him get better through stories, laughter, and companionship (陪伴).Sharon still keeps in touch with Dan today.
"Nothing brightens my day more than to be able to make someone who's going through something beyond my understanding smile," says Sharon. "I feel like I've become more of a caring and selfless person since I started volunteering.I look for joy in the joy I provide to others and focus less on myself. After a few months of volunteering,RMH brought out a more real version of myself-exactly who I want to be in life."
(1) When did Sharon first start volunteering? ______
(2) How did Sharon feel when she walked into RMH the first time? ______
(3) What did Sharon do to help Dan get better? ______
(4) Would you like to do volunteer work? Why?( Please give two reasons.) ______

Daming (2) ______
I'm doing a project on how to recycle the unrecyclable.I think the problem is too hard to solve.
Tony (3) ______
I often make mistakes.I hope to learn from them and make myself better.
15.The day had been good, but school was tiring.I was lying on my sofa, mindlessly scrolling(滾屏)through social media, obsessed(癡迷)with someone else's fancy life.Without even knowing it,I was comparing myself to others.
In fact,I'm not alone!Comparing is something we struggle with every day.Studies show that anytime a thought comes to our minds, there's a 1-in-10 chance that we're comparing ourselves to others.Social comparison theory states that people would judge their own social and personal worth by comparing themselves to others around them.
Comparison had been the thief of my joy for long until one day I realized that it is pointless to compare ourselves with others-we are comparing our weaknesses to someone's strengths.I still remember several moments when I thought the worst of myself because I thought the best of someone else. For example, every time I saw Kayla performing well at her schoolwork, the first thing that popped into my mind was a wish that I could be as smart as her.I kept asking myself,"Why couldn't I just be like her?"I practically praised Kayla while hating myself at the same time.
I decided to change.I started to focus on improving myself instead of comparing with others.I took up reading one book every month.I started new hobbies. This helped me to discover a new self.
I learned to appreciate(欣賞) what I had.Every day,I wrote down things I was happy about and chose to be around people who made me feel good. This made me value my life and see how special it is.
And I changed how I used social media.Instead of aimlessly scrolling,I customized(定制)my social media feeds(推送) to include more educational and inspirational information.I felt happier and was less likely to compare myself to others.
In our lives,it's important to ask ourselves a key question:are we tending to(照料)our own garden or are we only visitors, admiring the beautiful gardens of others while failing to care for our own?Try not to get lost in comparing yourself to others since everyone is different.Discover your gifts and let them shine!
(1) What was the writer obsessed with on social media? ______
(2) How do people judge their social and personal worth according to social comparison theory? ______
(3) Why does the writer think it is pointless to compare ourselves to others? ______
(4) What do you think of the ways the writer took to avoid pointless comparison? Why?(Please give two reasons.) ______
16.I'm no literary Luddite(反對新技術的人).I bought an iPad with my first paycheck from my first full-time job after graduating from college. But after two years of reading occasionally on the device.I gave it away to my brother. It just wasn't the right reading experience for me.
Technology lovers choose c-readers over books because e-readers are more convenient. They're right. It is objectively easier to carry a 7 oz(盎司) tablet with thousands and thousands of books at your fingertips than it is to carry five books in your bag, which is exactly what I did on vacation.
But I don't read for convenience.I read to learn more about the world and myself.I have made friends by seeing a book cover in a cafe and noticing that it was the same title that I was reading.I can trace my life by the books that have been my companions. When I open an old book and come across my previously scribbled notes —shaky ones when I've been reading on the subway, covered in sand if I read it at the beach, next to a train ticket if I was traveling—I am able to add an extra level of personal depth and experience to the story I am about to reread. It's just not enough to simply consuming the story, which is what e-readers are great for.
When I read paper books,I hold onto them for long periods of time.I just purchased a new bookshelf specially for my"to be read"pile.Once in a while,I go through the process of deciding which books to donate(捐贈),but usually the idea of parting with a book feels like giving away a part of my soul(靈魂).
Physical books may not be the most efficient medium, but they are the most meaningful. So keep your Kindle,by all means. But I'll be happy hoarding(貯存,聚藏) with my library.
(1) Why did the writer give his iPad to his brother? ______
(2) What does the writer want to learn by reading? ______
(3) How does the writer feel when parting with a book? ______
(4) Which do you prefer,e-books or paper books? And why?(Please give two reasons) ______

At a school in Anhui, technology is improving PE classes.Self-testing tools with AI visual analysis(可視化分析) technology are used for activities like running,jumping,sit-ups,and skipping rope.A facial recognition system records students" faces, allowing them to receive performance results immediately after each exercise. "Before, when I threw the shot put(鉛球),the teacher had to use a ruler to measure the distance. Now,the results are produced automatically(自動地).You can also see which parts of your exercise need improvements, with the teacher then helping to guide you to make those improvements,"said Wu Shengguo from the school.

Reading with The Fingertips(指尖)
Louis Braille was born in France in 1809.When he was three,he injured an eye in an accident in his father's workshop. The infection(感染)from the wound spread to his other eye.Within a year he couldn't see anything. When he was ten,he was sent to a school for the blind.Students there learned by listening to their teachers.
One day,a visitor came to the school. His name was Charles Barbier. He was to have a great influence on Braille.Louis was then twelve years old.Barbier had invented a new way of writing. He had hoped the French army would adopt(采納)his method. This writing was designed to be used at night.Soldiers could read it without showing a light.Barbier hoped the head of the school whose students lived their lives in darkness could use his way of writing.
Louis Braille stood out among those students. His mind was quick. He was eager to learn. The head of school invited him to meet the visitor.Barbier began to show how his writing worked.Braille's interest was aroused.Barbier took a sheet of thick paper.Using a pointed instrument,he punched a series of holes to make raised dots(點)on the other side of the paper. These dots were grouped together in cells(單元格).The cells could be placed in any of twelve positions. Each group stood for a different sound.By running a fingertip over them,a person could read a message.
Braille was excited by Barbier's invention. But he knew that it needed to be simpler. He started working on it at once.Instead of twelve positions for each unit,he decided to work with six. This let a reader make sense of the raised dots more quickly and easily.
Braille remained at the school all his life.He taught there. He also helped to print books that used his method.Braille was a very good musician. He showed people how to write music in his way.
Charles Barbier did not sell his method to the army. But he played a part in changing forever the way blind people read.Because of what he started and Louis Braille completed, people everywhere who cannot see are no longer limited by blindness.

Smarter libraries deliver greater knowledge
How long does it take a reader to get a book after placing an order in a library of over 8 million? The answer from a new library in the east of Beijing is less than 15 minutes.
Beijing Library has become a popular place since it opened in December last year.It received over 80,000 visits during the three-day New Year holiday.
Book lovers are attracted not only by the library's building design, which looks like a reading space under big ginkgo trees, but also by its huge collection of books and smart services.
Covering some 75,000 m2,Beijing Library houses over 8 million books. The towering stacks (書庫) on the library's basement floor helps its big amount of books. They are part of the largest single automated storage and retrieval system(自動化倉庫),also known as AS/RS,for books in China.
The stacks have a total storage area of less than 3,000 m2,yet they can store over 7 million books because of their special design. In addition to the stacks, the smart system includes various types of smart equipment like robots, which enable book delivery.
The AS/RS works like the smart brain of the library, enabling highly efficient services.Beijing Library is not alone in using AS/RS.The Suzhou No.2 Library, which opened in late 2019,was the first Chinese library to use it.
"Because more local governments place enriching cultural life high on their work list,we are seeing more public libraries introduce the AS/RS,"says Shi Qi,manager of the AS/RS business unit.
To make borrowing books easier, visitors to Beijing Library can sign up for a borrowing service with facial recognition and other technologies.A digital guide at the library's entrance also offers interactions with visitors if needed.
Readers who don't want to travel to the library can use the online borrowing service, which will deliver the book to their doorstep. The library's online borrowing service is open to readers not only in Beijing but also in neighboring Tianjin and Hebei province.
