Many people believe that modern lifestyles have caused humans to sleep less than our ancestors did in earlier times. However, a review of 54 global sleep studies shows that people in small, traditional communities actually sleep fewer hours than those in modern industrial societies.
Common beliefs suggest that smart phones and other devices have created a “sleep-loss problem” in recent years. But many past studies asking people to report their sleep hours may be unreliable. Newer research using special devices to measure physical activity or brain waves finds no clear drop in sleep time over the last 50 years. A 2016 study of 168 research projects even showed no change in average sleep length since the 1970s.
Earlier studies mainly focused on industrial nations. Now, scientists can use wrist-worn activity trackers to study sleep in traditional societies. For example, hunter-gatherer groups in southern Africa average just 6.7 hours of nightly sleep.
Researchers compared sleep habits between industrial societies and small traditional communities. Their analysis covered 54 studies with direct sleep measurements from 866 healthy adults. They found that traditional groups slept for 6.4 hours on average per night, while industrial societies averaged 7.1 hours. They also found that people in non-industrialized societies were asleep for 74 percent of the time they were in bed, compared with 88 percent in industrial societies, a measure known as sleep efficiency (效率).
Samson explains that safer sleeping conditions in modern societies may explain these differences. “We have improved safety in our bedrooms,” he says. “People no longer need to fend off dangers like wild animals or conflicts at night.”
To improve sleep quality, experts suggest maintaining consistent bedtimes, avoiding screens before bed, and creating a dark, quiet bedroom environment. Additionally, reducing caffeine intake and practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing can help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

Chocolate, a beloved treat worldwide, is often criticized for its high sugar content and environmental impact. However, Swiss researchers have pioneered a new method to produce healthier and more eco-friendly chocolate by making the best of the entire cocoa fruit instead of wasting most of it.
