BLACK-NECKED CRANE FESTIVAL (BHUTAN)

While on tour in central Thailand, British musician Paul Barton has been surrounded by unruly audiences that pull his hair, steal his music and climb over his piano, while enjoying bananas.
Barton is a rock star to hundreds of hungry wild monkeys that he hopes his music can calm, at a time when Thailand’ s coronavirus-induced tourism gap means fewer visitors to feed them, and less funds for their welfare. “We need to make an effort to make sure that they eat properly. And when they eat properly they will be calmer and will not be aggressive,” said Barton, 59, a long-time Thailand resident.
Barton has played at four venues in Lopburi, a province famous for its attacking monkeys, including at an ancient Hindu temple, a hardware store and a deserted cinema. The monkeys are instantly drawn as he plays Greensleeves, Beethoven’s Fur Elise and Michael Nyman’s Diary of Love, some sharing his stool, others climbing onto his shoulders and touching his head.
Barton maintains focus as a small monkey runs up and down the piano keys as others chew at his sheet music before one tries to take it away. “A wonderful opportunity to see the wild animals just being themselves,” said Barton, from Yorkshire in northern England. “I was surprised to play the piano and find that they were actually eating the music as I was playing it. Holidays are often described as picture-perfect moments: families happily united around a table filled with seasonal food favorites against a perfect background. For many parents, attempting to meet such unrealistic expectations can destroy their self-worth gradually. In the real world, parents are juggling (同時兼顧) more activities. It’s generally accepted that exercise is a key element of losing weight. But this long-held view has been called into question in recent years — with no shortage of articles and podcasts claiming it’s unclear whether exercise increases your metabolism (新陳代謝) and helps you burn calories after you work out.
The central belief of these reports is that the amount of calories we burn each day is somehow limited. This idea was first proposed in 2012 by the anthropologist Herman Pontzer, saying that as you increase your daily energy expenditure (消耗) through physical activity, your body will find ways to cut back on energy expended on other biological processes—such as your resting metabolism. This leaves your overall daily energy expenditure unchanged. This theory has since been popularised in Pontzer’s 2021 book Burn, saying that “we burn calories within a very narrow range: nearly 3,000 calories per day, no matter our activity level”. His evidence was based on the observational studies that compared energy expenditure in different populations around the world.
But before you pack away your running shoes, let’s look at what the research shows us. The most reliable evidence available on the topic actually shows that exercise does increase energy expenditure — though perhaps not as much as we might expect.
Indeed, Pontzer’s own observational data shows that daily energy expenditure can vary by more than 1,000 calories per day in a group of older people. This directly contradicts his idea that it’s fixed at 3,000 calories a day for everyone.
However, when we look at data from randomized (隨機的) controlled trials, we can clearly see that exercise does have an effect on energy expenditure. They show a well-organized exercise programme done up to five times a week for six and ten months increases daily energy expenditure. These effects were shown in both young and middle-aged men and women. This research clearly shows that physical activity does increase how many calories you burn each day.
