Six years ago at the age of 35, I suddenly decided I wanted to learn the cello. Straight away I rented an instrument and appeared before Wendell Margrave, professor of musical instruction.
“You can be as good as you want to be,” Margrave said rather mysteriously. Then he entered my name in book: 10 am, Tuesday. Tuesday followed Tuesday, and soon it was spring.
Thus I began my voyage out of ignorance and into the dream. It was a happy time. I was again becoming something new, and no longer trapped as the same person. Surely the most terrible recognition of middle life is that we are past changing. We do what we can already do. The cello was something I couldn't do. Yet each Tuesday this became less and less true. Riding home on the bus one snowy night and learning the score of Mozarts C-Major Quintet, I felt the page burst into music in my hands. I could by then more or less read a score, and was humming the cello line, when suddenly all five parts came together harmonically in my head. The fellow sitting opposite stared. I met his glance with tears, actually hearing the music in my head for the first time. Could he hear it too, perhaps No, he got off at the next stop.
As the years slipped by, my daughter grew up, playing the piano well. My goal was that she and I would one day perform together. I also wanted to perform in public with and for my peers, and to be secretly envied. I continued to play, to perform, but it is not the same. As good as I wanted to be, I am as good as I'm going to get. It is good enough.

George Li was born in 1995 and now is a young pianist on the rise. At age 10, he gave his first public concert and in 2015, he won a silver medal at International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Li recently released his first album, performing with some of the world's great orchestras.
The centerpiece of Li's album is the passionate Piano Sonata No. 2 by Chopin—the one with the funeral march as its third movement. Chopin is close to Li's heart, as it was Chopin's music that earned him the top prize at the Cooper International Competition at Oberlin Conservatory when he was just 15.
Li's album, Live at the Mariinsky, released last fall on Warner Classics, opens with the Piano Sonata in B minor by Haydn. Li's gentle touch makes the music shine. “I think the main requirement is the touch. It has to be so sensitive,” he says about Haydn. “Imagine the champagne bubbles, or just that sound when the champagne pours into glass.”
Li was born in Boston. His parents came to the U.S. from China in the 1980s. He says they had few opportunities to hear classical music in the process of growing up. Li began playing the piano at age four and thought of it only as a hobby. But one day, when he was 11, playing Beethoven's First Piano Concerto, everything changed.
“All of a sudden, in the middle of the performance I felt different,” he says. “I_was_kind_of_transported_in_some_other_reality. And I felt all these emotions within the piece and within myself.” And that's when Li's light bulb switched on. After that moment he wanted to do this for the rest of his life. Fortunately for George Li's fans, that's likely to be a very long time.

From self-driving cars to carebots (care+robots) for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat (威脅) to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary by 2025 as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia-Pacific. A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already destroys more jobs than it creates. But the report states, “Losing occupations does not necessarily mean losing jobs—just changing what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research. “The growth of companies that have the speed and technological know-how will directly challenge big companies,” it states.
A 2014 report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report's co-author.
“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Microsoft's Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
