We hear many hem stones about saving lives but that's usually where the narrative ends. We may take some time to praise those who took action, but we rarely get to see the lasting effects of the hero's deeds. That's why it's been fascinating to hear the story of Xavier Dimples. When he was 2 years old, his house caught fire, trapping him inside. The young boy nearly died during the disaster; however, a brave firefighter named Jeff Ohs rescued him from the flames and made him become conscious again. Now,23 years after this dramatic incident, they had a moving meet up, and the fireman got to see the happy consequence of having saved a life that day.
Dimples shared his story on Twitter, posting side by side pictures of him as a toddler in Ohs' arms after being saved, alongside a present-day image. “I ended up dying that day. This firefighter. Jeff Ohs, saved me and brought me back to life,” the man writes, thanking the fireman profusely. The highest praise came in the form of being introduced to a little someone. The fireman got to meet Dimples’ 2-year-old son — the same age the new dad was when he was saved from the fire. “Now 23 years later he is holding my 2-year-old son. I literally wouldn't be here without him.” The young man also added being rescued from the fire didn't mean danger was over for him. “Because I was in a coma (昏迷) for a month after that.” Dimples also posted a couple of pictures of the dramatic moments in which Ohs brought him back to life in the yard of his home. “Looking at these is so crazy,” he admitted with emotion.
Fortunately, it all worked in the end. Over two decades, the man is thriving and has a family of his own. As for Ohs, although retiring from his position, he continues to be an advocate for firefighters, offering guidance on how to prevent injuries. Even though 23 years passed, Dimples is still reminded of the deep bond established between Ohs and him. That's what the hero's deeds mean to everyone.

History was recently made at a half-marathon in Beijing. In addition to welcoming 12, 000runners, the race also featured 21 robot participants.
The only design rule for the competing robots was that they were bipedal (雙足行走的)instead of running on wheels. Otherwise, it was a free for all, resulting in interesting design choices with mixed results. The strategies used included robots with kid-sized sneakers, or shoes made out of tape. Some didn't have a head, while others did, resulting in teams fixing them mid-race to prevent them from falling. Others used knee pads (護膝) to prevent them from breaking in case they fall downwards — and many of them did.
Only six of the 21 robots finished the race. Running on a separate track from the human competitors, almost every robot faced difficulties, from falling down to overheating. One robot needed a cooling pad to make it to the end while others had liquid sprayed on them. All robots were accompanied by two or three human operators who ran beside them to help control their speed with control panels or to clear their path.
The winner was a robot named Tiangong Ultra, designed by UB Tech and the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center. It finished the race in two hours and 40 minutes. Despite being the robot victor, its path was not free of accidents either. It fell down once and its team had to change its batteries three times.
“Until five years ago or so, we didn't really know how to get robots to walk reliably,” Alan Fem, a robotics professor at Oregon State. “And now we do, and this will be a good demonstration of that.”
Fern also noted that there's no market demand for running robots, which likely explains why it's not a priority for developers, adding that it was definitely interesting to see them follow instructions in a challenging environment. As such, the half-marathon provided them with a platform to showcase their hardware robustness (穩定性). Ultimately, there's no need to worry——a robot will likely not beat you in a race. Not right now anyway.

Currently, tens of thousands of caves are known globally, but many of the world's caves still remain unexplored.
“Caving is the last realm where true, pure exploration is possible,” says Phil Short, a cave explorer. “And in caves, treasures can be found, new species, new cures for disease.” adds Short.
Some caves are reported to have their own weather system. Some contain the secrets of human evolution, and of the life that came before us. Some are hot spots of biodiversity.
Entomologist Leonidas-Romanos Davranoglou at Oxford University trekked to the Cyclops Mountains in the Papuan region of Indonesia. In a previously unknown cave system, his team discovered a “treasure trove” of underground species, including blind spiders, blind harvestman and a whip scorpion (鞭尾蝎) —— all new to science.
For more than 20 years, geomicrobiologist Hazel Barton has been studying microscopic life, found deep underground, that can survive extreme starvation. Her research is furthering our understanding of what the ability to photosynthesise (光合作用) might tell us about the possibility of life in outer space.
“A kilometre from the entrance, there's still photosynthesis,” says Barton, “but it's pushed into the near-infrared wavelength (近紅外波長). There are stars that only emit in those wavelengths. So, this could help us understand how life is possible on other planets.” she says.
