W: I have a question for all of us. Is all winning success Winning is really, really fun. But I am here to share my idea: Winning does not always equal success. Back to 1990, when I was first made the head coach of the UCLA Women's Gymnastics Team. I acted like a head coach whose only thought was to figure out how to win. So I became tough-talking and mean. Our team asked me for a team meeting for over two hours. They gave me examples of how my arrogance was hurtful. Then I chose to change. It is so much easier to give orders than to figure out how to motivate someone to be better. We all know this motivation takes a really long time to take root. The key to promote motivation is to develop trust through patience and honesty. We are all coaches in some ways. We all have the responsibility to develop champions in life for our world. This is what real success looks like, and that is what we call a win-win.

根據第二段中“At that time, she focused on her battle with cancer and fell into a depression(抑郁). She was walking on the street one day when she noticed a hummingbird that had suffered a serious eye injury. The kindhearted woman took it home and named it Gucci. She managed to nurse Gucci back to health(當時,她專注于與癌癥的斗爭,陷入了抑郁癥。有一天,她在街上散步時,注意到一只蜂鳥眼睛嚴重受傷。這位好心的女士把它帶回家,并命名為 Gucci。她設法護理Gucci恢復健康)”可推知,Catia在救第一只蜂鳥時情緒低落。故選D項。

29.細節理解題。根據第三段“More than a month after the evacuation, many were still living in temporary (臨時的) accommodations and did not expect to ever be able to return to live in their homes. “The town might end up under the lava,” said Ael Kermarec, a tourist.(在撤離一個多月后,許多人仍然住在臨時住所,并期望永遠無法回到自己的家中生活。游客埃爾·克馬雷克(Ael Kermarec)說:“小鎮可能會被熔巖淹沒。”)”可知,Kermarec擔心這個小鎮的安危。故選C項。
30.推理判斷題。根據第四段““Residents should strictly follow travel advice because new eruptions can quickly put people in harm’s way. This style of eruption is among the most impressive ever seen, and there will be a strong pull for tourists and locals,” Watson said. “It’s just something from a movie.”(“居民們應該嚴格遵守旅行建議,因為新的火山噴發會很快把人們置于危險之中。這種噴發方式是我見過的最令人印象深刻的,對游客和當地人來說將是一個強大的吸引力,”沃森說。“這只是電影里的情節。”)”可推斷,這次火山爆發可能吸引很多人前去觀看。故選A項。
根據最后一段“Residents were evacuated and a state of emergency was announced in Iceland more than a month ago. However, the uneasy waiting game still continues.(一個多月前,居民被疏散,冰島宣布進入緊急狀態。然而,令人不安的等待游戲仍在繼續)”并結合上文內容可推斷,這次災害終結尚需時日。故選B項。

32.推理判斷題。根據第一段中“The average smartphone user seldom goes two hours without using her device, unlocks her device 50 or more times a day, and taps on it as many as 2,617 times in the process. The youth are particularly affected: A 2018 Pew Research Center report found that 44% of teens said they often check their devices for messages or notifications as soon as they wake up, 54% said they spend too much time on their mobile phone, and 42% feel anxiety when they do not have it.(普通智能手機用戶很少有連續兩小時不使用設備的情況,每天解鎖設備50次或更多次,過程中點擊設備次數高達2617次。
根據最后一段“The digital-technology expert Cal Newport recommends the “phone foyer” method, that is he leaves his phone by the front door when he walks into his house, and doesn’t put it in his pocket until he leaves again. If he needs to look at it, he does so only at the entrance hall. Just as the Greek Stoic philosopher (哲學家) Epictetus once said, “No man is free who is not master of himself.”(數字技術專家卡爾·紐波特推薦“電話門廳”的方法,即當他走進家門時,把手機放在前門,直到再次離開時才把手機放進口袋。如果他需要看手機,他只會在門廳看。正如古希臘斯多葛學派哲學家愛比克泰德曾經說過的:“不能控制自己的人是不自由的。”)”可推知,作者在最后一段引用愛比克泰德的話是為了激勵人們擺脫手機成癮。故選D。
35.主旨大意題。根據第三段“But in a world of electronic payments, digital documents, and remote work, a truly smartphone-free lifestyle is getting less and less likely. A better-and, for many of us, more reasonable-way is to manage addictive behavior by moderating (使適度) device use. This isn’t just a matter of setting screen-time limits you can easily break; rather, you can start to develop specific habits to replace the unhealthy ones that keep sending you back to your phone.(但在電子支付、數字文檔和遠程辦公的世界里,真正擺脫智能手機的生活方式越來越不可能實現。對我們許多人來說,一個更好、更合理的方法是通過適度使用設備來管理成癮行為。這不僅僅是設定一個你很容易打破的屏幕時間限制的問題;相反,你可以開始養成特定的習慣,來取代那些讓你不斷回到手機上的不健康習慣)”并結合全文可知,文章主要講述了手機成癮的現象及其危害,并提出了管理成癮行為的建議。A選項“如何戒掉手機癮”最符合文章標題。故選A。

Hummingbirds (蜂鳥) are a very important part of Mexico’s ecosystem, but because of the ever-spreading city landscape, they face all sorts of serious dangers. That’s where 73-year-old Catia Lattouf de Arida comes in. As a self-taught hummingbird care-taker, she devotes most of her free time and resources to nursing the tiny birds back to health. Her home in Mexico City has become known as a hummingbird hospital.
Catia’s story as a hummingbird nurse began in 2011, at a very difficult moment in her life. At that time, she focused on her battle with cancer and fell into a depression (抑郁). She was walking on the street one day when she noticed a hummingbird that had suffered a serious eye injury. The kindhearted woman took it home and named it Gucci. She managed to nurse Gucci back to health, but she said it was Gucci that saved her. Why Because the hummingbird managed to pull her out of the sadness and loneliness that had taken over her life.
Word of her success spread among Catia’s friends, and before long some of them began bringing her injured hummingbirds. She didn’t repulse them at all. She began to study the bird and their habits in order to better take care of them, and after 11 years of experience, the 73-year-old woman is considered an expert on hummingbirds.
In order to raise awareness of the difficult situation of hummingbirds in Mexico, Catia Lattouf de Arida started posting videos of the patients in her Mexico City apartment on social media, and many of them became popular. That’s when the need for her nursing services really blew up. She has cared for hundreds of hummingbirds in her 11-year career, when she has had as many as 50 of them in her apartment at any one time. She spends pretty much all her time looking after the tiny birds.

D.The way to become the most popular Internet celebrity online.
26.Why did Catia post videos online

A shocking eruption has ended Iceland’s lengthy volcano warning as a flash of light burst across the evening sky and the lava (巖漿) flowed out quickly in a breathtaking show of the Earth’s power. But the eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 50km southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, wasn’t expected to give out large amounts of ash (灰塵) into the air.
By early Tuesday afternoon, the size of the volcanic eruption continued to diminish. The lava flow, which reached as high as 30m, was also falling and was a quarter of what it was at the time of the eruption.
The November evacuation meant few people were near the site of the eruption and authorities had warned others to stay away. Nonetheless, residents of the evacuated fishing community had mixed emotions as they watched orange flames touch the dark sky. More than a month after the evacuation, many were still living in temporary (臨時的) accommodations and did not expect to ever be able to return to live in their homes. “The town might end up under the lava,” said Ael Kermarec, a tourist. “It’s amazing to see, but there’s kind of a bittersweet feeling at the moment.”
University of Bristol Professor Matthew Watson said that the eruption was expected to continue getting weak, but he had no idea how long it could last. “Residents should strictly follow travel advice because new eruptions can quickly put people in harm’s way. This style of eruption is among the most impressive ever seen, and there will be a strong pull for tourists and locals,” Watson said. “It’s just something from a movie.”
Residents were evacuated and a state of emergency was announced in Iceland more than a month ago. However, the uneasy waiting game still continues.
28.Which of the following best explains “diminish” underlined in paragraph 2
A.Keep growing. B.Be destroyed.
C.Get dangerous. D.Become smaller.
29.What did Kermarec want to say
A.He couldn’t see the breathtaking show. B.He forgot to share the feeling online.
C.He was worried about the town. D.He wasn’t ready for a new life.
30.What can we infer about the eruption from Watson’s words
A.It may draw people to the site. B.It will threaten wildlife.
C.It attracts many movie lovers. D.It drives tourists to leave.
31.What does the last paragraph suggest
A.Playing games is an approach to killing time.
B.It will be a long time before the disaster ends.
C.Local residents will return home in one month.
D.Authorities should announce a warning early.

By now, nearly everyone knows we can be addicted to our digital devices (設備). The average smartphone user seldom goes two hours without using her device, unlocks her device 50 or more times a day, and taps on it as many as 2,617 times in the process. The youth are particularly affected: A 2018 Pew Research Center report found that 44% of teens said they often check their devices for messages or notifications as soon as they wake up, 54% said they spend too much time on their mobile phone, and 42% feel anxiety when they do not have it.
A device addiction is quite harmful. According to the technology research firm Compare Camp, 26% of car accidents in the U.S. today are due to the use of smartphones while driving. Besides, it is concerned with depression and anxiety. These problems are known to almost everyone; the solutions, less so. Some experts suggest taxation (征稅) to help limit digital overuse. Others say the only way to beat an addiction is to quit cold turkey and go device-free.
But in a world of electronic payments, digital documents, and remote work, a truly smartphone-free lifestyle is getting less and less likely. A better-and, for many of us, more reasonable-way is to manage addictive behavior by moderating (使適度) device use. This isn’t just a matter of setting screen-time limits you can easily break; rather, you can start to develop specific habits to replace the unhealthy ones that keep sending you back to your phone.
The digital-technology expert Cal Newport recommends the “phone foyer” method, that is he leaves his phone by the front door when he walks into his house, and doesn’t put it in his pocket until he leaves again. If he needs to look at it, he does so only at the entrance hall. Just as the Greek Stoic philosopher (哲學家) Epictetus once said, “No man is free who is not master of himself.”
32.How does the writer explain phone addiction in paragraph 1
A.By giving reasons. B.By listing data.
C.By raising questions. D.By making comparisons.
33.What does the underlined word “quit cold turkey” mean in paragraph 2
A.Charge a tax. B.Stop eating turkeys.
C.Stop using smartphones. D.Discourage smoking.
34.Why does the author quote Epictetus in the last paragraph
A.To show respect to Epictetus.
B.To prove the “phone foyer” method.
C.To advise people to be a master.
D.To inspire people to get rid of phone addiction.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.How to Break a Phone Addiction
B.Effect of Phone Addiction on Teens
C.Phone Addiction Ruins Our Freedom
D.Device Addiction Contributes to Anxiety

The summer break had started. Bilal, a teenager, was excited to finally have the free time to play video games on his PlayStation and endlessly surf the internet on his phone. The digital world was his playground, a place where he could escape into adventures and challenges that kept him entertained for hours on end.
His parents were tired of always trying to stop him, constantly telling him that spending so much time online and on social media wasn’t good for his physical health. They worried about his eyesight and the lack of physical activity. But Bilal never listened. He was very addicted to the e-world. The appeal of virtual achievements and social interactions was too strong for him to resist.
One day, after getting fed up, his mother discussed Bilal with his grandparents. “Is there any way we can get him away from this internet world ” she asked, her voice filled with desperation.
His grandfather replied, “Yes, there is a way. I am planning to visit our village for a week. I am thinking of taking Bilal along. It will be a new experience for him to see a simple lifestyle. Besides, the internet signals are very bad there, so he won’t be able to stay online very often.”
His mother was happy to hear this. “That’s a very good idea,” she replied, hopeful that this could be the turning point for Bilal.
She excitedly went and shared it with Bilal, hoping he would be happy about going with his grandparents, but he refused, saying the trip would be boring without the internet. “How would I spend my days ” he complained.
Just then his grandmother entered the room and explained calmly to him that it would be an exciting trip. She spoke of the beauty of nature, the joy of community, and the simple pleasures of life away from screens.
