In December 2018, Cheré Bautista had to face a fear that she had worried about since she was a teen. Then 36, Bautista had spent months searching for work and had finally been offered a job in the call center of a Seattle-area hospital. But at the last minute, the offer was rescinded due to something Bautista had kept secret for twenty years: She had never graduated from high school.
“That was the lowest point in my life,” recalls Bautista. She has come a long way since her childhood. Raised by a single dad, she often had to take care of herself. At 16, she dropped out of high school to work and support herself. Gradually, Bautista built a life. By 2005, she had worked at a local bank.

A shocking eruption has ended Iceland’s lengthy volcano warning as a flash of light burst across the evening sky and the lava (巖漿) flowed out quickly in a breathtaking show of the Earth’s power. The Mountain Bongo (a type of antelope) has been driven to near extinction, according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). Ecologist Mordecai Ogada says, “It can only be found in the wild in Kenya, highly endangered, and that is why protecting this species is important.”
The populations of the animals have been greatly reduced. The animals have been hunted for their meat and their prized coat, skulls, and horns. Human-wildlife activities, especially the sharing of grounds with livestock (家畜), also led to the spread of diseases.
Some were traded to zoos in the United States and efforts to save the animals have depended on returning them to Kenya. At one time, there were only 18 of these creatures left in captivity (圈養(yǎng)) there. They were sent back to Kenya in 2004 to breed (繁殖) them and re-establish the Mountain Bongo in their natural area. But it has been a slow process.
“So, the bongos that are coming back from zoos need a very long time to be able to get used to the wild environment again and it takes several generations,” explains Philippe Cauviere, chief executive officer at Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy. “And that is why it has taken such a long time to get where we are today. We’ve had more than 70 births.”
To support the recovery of the species in the wild, the government agency, Kenya Wildlife Service, together with Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy, set up the Mawingu Bongo Sanctuary as part of the National Mountain Bongo Recovery and Action Plan 2019-2023. The sanctuary is on the slopes (坡地) of Mount Kenya. There are plans to set free 25 Mountain Bongos in this protected area. This will help the rewilding of the animals as well as reintroducing them into their original habitats.

Patrick Sommier, a French theater director, is devoted to passing on the true meaning of Chinese operas to the French public.

Vicky was a first-grade student in a primary school, but she did not feel happy there. Her parents wanted to cheer her up, so they sent her to start her second grade in a primary school nearby. She felt quite happy and wanted to make some new friends. However, she made a mistake. She wanted to become so popular that she ioined a group of students at school, but not in the right way.
Jenny, who was very nice at the beginning, became Vicky’s best friend. But Vicky did not realize that by joining up with her, she would suffer a lot later.
Jenny always acted in a proud and unpleasant wav. showing little thought for others. She did not want Vicky to have other friends. Jenny also enjoyed talking about others’ private lives. Vicky started to change as soon as she met Jenny. Her personality was not as sweet as before any more.
Time went by slowly. Vicky’s marks began to go down. Things got even worse. She hardly had any friends and she didn’t care about her friends at all. either. She always talked to her classmates in an impolite way instead of being nice.
After all that suffering, the day at last arrived when one of her classmates told her that Jenny was not going to be in the school next year as she was moving. Vicky said nothing but in fact did not believe it.
However, on the last day at school Jenny told Vicky that she was leaving. Instead of having a happy parting(分手) , Jenny told her that she never felt that Vicky was her true friend.
Vicky was quite surprised when she heard the news and started crying. When holiday was over, Vicky went back to school. telling herself that all the bad times she had suffered last year with Jenny were over, too. But she found out that her classmates had not forgotten her bad acts.
