The museum is on Town Lane in Singleton, reached via the A286 from Chichester to Midhurst. Parking is free and there are disabled parking spaces opposite the museum shop.
Value for money
Yes. It’s not cheap but it’s a special experience that easily fills a day. Plus it’s a valuable cause worth supporting. Adults 14, children 5—17 and students 6.50, under-4s free, family 38 (two adults and two children) or 25 (one adult and three children).

Andrew Bastawrous was 12 when he found out he could barely see. He was then socially awkward, failing at school and terrible at ball games.
Glasses turned his life around, yet even as a child he was aware of how lucky he was. Bastawrous grew up in the UK, but his family would visit poor parts of Egypt, where his parents were from. “Nobody there wore glasses, but I knew some people needed them,” he says. “It felt incredibly unfair. At 16, I decided I wasn’t going to feel guilty about it any more.” He determined there and then to become an eye surgeon, and he did.
In 2012, he and his wife moved with their one-year-old son to a small town 5 hours’ drive from Nairobi. They had limited electricity and running water. For 18 months, every time Bastawrous and his team set up their “mobile” eye clinic in yet another new location, they had to drag heavy, fragile hospital equipment cross-country. There was another problem, as one local doctor described it, “We don’t even have enough doctors and now you also want eye surgeons That’s probably a pipe dream.”
All this convinced Bastawrous that something fundamental was needed. So he started exploring ways to replace his clinic with a single, convenient device: a smartphone. He co-developed an app-based visual test that gathers as much information as the classic one, using similar principles. The critical difference is that almost anyone can carry it out after just a few minutes of training. Bastawrous co-founded a charitable company to develop and apply the technology more widely. His team also developed technologies that enabled a smartphone camera to take hospital-grade images of the back of the eye.
That’s a pretty good start, but Bastawrous has his sights set sky high. “I feel we’re at a tipping point now where this enormous problem will become a historical thing. That’s when I’ll sleep easy,” he says.

The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical — but it’s a real ability that some creatures have. A family of African fish known as Momyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modelled on the ability of these fish.
“We developed a new strategy for 3D motion positioning by electronic skin, bio-inspired by ‘electric fish,’” says Dr. Xinge Yu, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Eagineering at the City University of Hong Kong. The team described their e-skin sensor in a paper published on November 14 in Nature.
The artificial sensor is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter (發射器), which will generate an electric field once activated, and another layer acts as a receiver to detect both the direction and the distance to an object. A separate controller creates the driving signal to activate the transmitter. When an object comes within range, the electric field around the sensor is disrupted, which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then processed by a microcontroller unit, which computes the position of the target object and sends that information to a smartphone or other devices.
A special biogel (生物凝膠) is used in the sensor, which has the ability to transmit and receive electric signals from a pattern of microchannels on the surface. The end result is a sensor that is thin, soft and flexible, making it easy to adapt to irregular surfaces, such as the human body. In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing.
The researchers hope that this sensor could one day open up a new range of wearable technologies, including sensors for human-machine interaction and thin, flexible e-skin.

Greenhouse gas emissions would rise if all farms in England and Wales went organic. Though the emissions of each farm would go down, much more food would have to be imported, as the amount they would produce would decrease greatly.
“The key message from my perspective is that you can’t really have your cake and eat it,” says Laurence Smith, now at the Royal Agricultural University in the UK, who was part of the team that ran the numbers. Smith is a supporter of organic farming and says “there are a lot of advantages of the organic approach”, but his analysis shows that organic farming has downsides too.
Farming and changes in land use, such as cutting down forests, are responsible for a third of all greenhouse gas emissions. That means reducing farming emissions and the land needed for farming is required to limit further global warming.
Smith and his co-workers found that emissions per unit of food are on average, 20 per cent lower for organic crops and 4 per cent lower for organic animal products. However, organic harvests per hectare (公頃) are also lower on average. For wheat and barley, for instance, harvests are just half of those of traditional farms. This means 1.5 times as much land would be needed to grow the same amount of these foods.
The estimated increase in emissions varies greatly, depending on where the extra farmland comes from. If only half comes from turning grassland into farms, the increase could be as low as 20 per cent. If grassland that would otherwise have been reforested is turned into farmland, emissions could nearly double.
This doesn’t necessarily mean people should stop eating organic produce, says Smith. People might choose organic food for other reasons, such as to reduce their pesticide exposure (though contrary to popular belief, organic farmers do use pesticides) or for the sake of wildlife. Smith says the best choice may be to use some organic and traditional farming methods at the same time.
