It was a normal day, Julia and I were working in the container checking the instruments and
doing other routine operations when the phone rang. It was Ian. He wanted to know if one of us could
go outside to be their polar bear guard for the next few hours. We looked at each other and it was
soon decided that I would go. Julia had more work to do in the container.
Obviously shooting was our last resort; there were a lot of other actions that needed to be taken
beforehand in order to scare the bear away. But, if worse came to worst, we needed to be ready. The
other reason for which a female “newbie” like me was allowed to guard was that I would be working
at the balloon site that is the closest to the ship. This means that in case a polar bear comes we could
reach the ship in just a few minutes and thus it was really unlikely that I would have to use the rifle

Being a polar bear guard is not the most exciting job out there: you have to stand in the cold,
downwind from the group, from where the polar bear is likely to approach because of the smell,
looking at the horizon for several hours. On the other hand, the guard job gives you a lot of time to
think and reflect while staring at this breathtaking landscape. This is one of the reasons why I often
volunteer to be a polar bear guard.
During the last period we had several interesting observations about a big puzzle that we were
trying to solve. While I was reflecting on some elements, I realized that Ian and Julia recovered the
balloon, so I joined them and we headed back to the ship just in time for dinner. We stayed outside
only for a couple of hours but this was enough to refresh my brain with clean Arctic air and come up
with new ideas and thoughts to discuss with the other scientists on board. Similar “recreational”

In 1998, a group of friends was making soup together when inspiration struck: they wondered
if they could turn their vegetables into musical instruments. The idea started as a joke, but they
decided to test it out since they were signed up to perform at an upcoming music festival. That's when
the Vegetable Orchestra was born. In the 25 years since, the group has used fresh carrots, pumpkins,
and other vegetables to create around 100 instruments, release four albums, and perform more than
300 concerts all over the world.
Not all vegetables are suitable for music; they need to be fresh enough to handle drilling and
shaping and the right size and shape to produce the required sound. The most challenging part is
preparing for each performance, as the musicians have to constantly make new instruments. Fresh
vegetables only last a few hours after being cut and handled. Therefore, for each city on their tour,
they need to buy fresh vegetables that look and sound interesting in local markets. They then use
drills(鉆頭), knives, and other kitchen tools to turn the vegetables into violins, flutes, and other
instruments.
Over the decades, the Vegetable Orchestra’s performance style has changed significantly. Even
though the carrot flute and leek violin that appeared at the first concert remain dependable parts of
the collection, the way the orchestra approaches them has matured and transformed over the years.
"In the early days, we were trying to make the vegetables fit our musical compositions; now, it tends
to be the other way around," explains Ingrid Schl gl, a classically trained musician and singer who
joined the orchestra in 2004. "We are developing towards exploring the music of the vegetables and
digging deeper into this element."
Today, the group engages in a variety of musical styles — from free jazz to experimental
electronic. Each member builds their own instruments and develops their specialties over time. They

The number of trees larger than two feet across has decreased by 50% on more than 46, 000 square
miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected from the foggy

But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one
between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees
that was clear even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage.
The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees
were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into consideration such things as
rainfall, air temperature, dampness (潮濕) of soil and the timing of snowmelt (融雪) .
“Since the 1930s”, McIntyre said, “the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have
been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which
reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season. Although the government and

trees surviving in the next few decades, if these trends continue.”

It was a normal day, Julia and I were working in the container checking the instruments and doing other routine operations when the phone rang. It was Ian. He wanted to know if one of us could go outside to be their polar bear guard for the next few hours. We looked at each other and it was soon decided that I would go. Julia had more work to do in the container.
Obviously shooting was our last resort; there were a lot of other actions that needed to be taken beforehand in order to scare the bear away. But, if worse came to worst, we needed to be ready. The other reason for which a female “newbie” like me was allowed to guard was that I would be working at the balloon site that is the closest to the ship. This means that in case a polar bear comes we could reach the ship in just a few minutes and thus it was really unlikely that I would have to use the rifle(步槍).
Being a polar bear guard is not the most exciting job out there: you have to stand in the cold, downwind from the group, from where the polar bear is likely to approach because of the smell, looking at the horizon for several hours. On the other hand, the guard job gives you a lot of time to think and reflect while staring at this breathtaking landscape. This is one of the reasons why I often volunteer to be a polar bear guard.
During the last period we had several interesting observations about a big puzzle that we were trying to solve. While I was reflecting on some elements, I realized that Ian and Julia recovered the balloon, so I joined them and we headed back to the ship just in time for dinner. We stayed outside only for a couple of hours but this was enough to refresh my brain with clean Arctic air and come up with new ideas and thoughts to discuss with the other scientists on board. Similar “recreational” activities were one of the reasons for which I enjoyed so much this experience and I will certainly miss them afterwards!

In 1998, a group of friends was making soup together when inspiration struck: they wondered if they could turn their vegetables into musical instruments. The idea started as a joke, but they decided to test it out since they were signed up to perform at an upcoming music festival. That’s when the Vegetable Orchestra was born. In the 25 years since, the group has used fresh carrots, pumpkins, and other vegetables to create around 100 instruments, release four albums, and perform more than 300 concerts all over the world.
Not all vegetables are suitable for music; they need to be fresh enough to handle drilling and shaping and the right size and shape to produce the required sound. The most challenging part is preparing for each performance, as the musicians have to constantly make new instruments. Fresh vegetables only last a few hours after being cut and handled. Therefore, for each city on their tour, they need to buy fresh vegetables that look and sound interesting in local markets. They then use drills(鉆頭), knives, and other kitchen tools to turn the vegetables into violins, flutes, and other instruments.
Over the decades, the Vegetable Orchestra’s performance style has changed significantly. Even though the carrot flute and leek violin that appeared at the first concert remain dependable parts of the collection, the way the orchestra approaches them has matured and transformed over the years. “In the early days, we were trying to make the vegetables fit our musical compositions; now, it tends to be the other way around,” explains Ingrid Schl gl, a classically trained musician and singer who joined the orchestra in 2004. “We are developing towards exploring the music of the vegetables and digging deeper into this element.”
Today, the group engages in a variety of musical styles — from free jazz to experimental electronic. Each member builds their own instruments and develops their specialties over time. They create their musical compositions through an intensely collaborative process and have developed their own system of musical notation(音樂(lè)符號(hào)). They have no leader and perform without a conductor, relying on body language to communicate during performances. “We are such individual people, but when we are on stage, we are like one body,” says Schl gl.

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s according to a study published Tuesday. The number of trees larger than two feet across has decreased by 50% on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55%; in parts of southern California the decrease was nearly 75%.
So serious is this issue that many environmentalists show their concern and try to figure out the main reasons behind it. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters preferred big trees. Housing development encroached on the woods. Heavy wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources.
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010, McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was clear even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into consideration such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness(潮濕) of soil and the timing of snowmelt(融雪).
“Since the 1930s”, McIntyre said, “the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season. Although the government and organizations have been taking measures to deal with these problems, we may see even fewer big trees surviving in the next few decades, if these trends continue.”
