Robots Dance Yangko(秧歌) at 2025 CCTV Spring Festival Gala(春晚)
On January 28, 2025, a special performance called YangBOT amazed audiences at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, China's most - watched TV show. Directed by famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology.
In the performance, humanoid robots (robots shaped like humans) dressed in colorful costumes danced yangko, a joyful folk dance from northern China often seen during festivals. They spun handkerchiefs(轉手帕) fast and formed creative group patterns. These robots were developed by Unitree(宇樹科技),a Chinese robotics company. This was not Unitree's first success-in 2021, their robot cows named “Ben Ben”(犇犇) danced as backup(伴舞) for singer Andy Lau(Liu Dehua).
The robots learned dance moves through AI and used laser navigation(激光導航) to move safely on the uneven(不平坦的) stage. Their strong joints(關節) helped them balance perfectly during fast steps. Zhang Yimou explained, “This dance isn't just fun-it shows how technology can bring new life to traditions."
Thanks to these innovations, the robots won the hearts of millions. On social media, topics like “Robot Yangko” spread quickly. Young viewers called it "cool,” while older audiences loved its humor and festive spirit.

When I was young, my father used to grow carnations—a kind of flower that was red, pink and white. He took care of them with much love and devotion (摯愛). When he came home from work every day, he would enjoy watching them. And he used to tell us, “No one should touch my flowers.”
One day, my younger sister Clemence, who loved Dad very much, wanted to help him. So she cut the carnations from their stems (枝干) one by one and arranged them on the ground.
