I sold one of my cars and switched to an e-bike one year ago. I knew that I was doing something good for the planet. But I still viewed giving up my car as something reserved for the deeply committed and adventurous, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. However, I live in Colorado; e-bike would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun.
I was very wrong. Biking to work was more than not unpleasant — it was entirely captivating. Before selling my car, I worried most about riding in the cold winter months. But I quickly learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. I wear gloves, warm socks and a ski jacket when I ride, and I am almost never too cold. Instead, I feel warmer and stronger after the ride.
Though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the e-bike solved my problem. Even when there was 35 degrees Celsius outside, I didn’t sweat, thanks to my bike’s pedal-assist mode If I am honest, sometimes I didn’t even pedal; I just switched to pedal-assist mode, sat back and enjoyed my ride.
One day, shortly after selling our car, I hopped on my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. This, I have to say, inspired me to appreciate the beauty in my life and was what delighted me most on the bike.
Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. In a country where uncontrolled stretching of suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that the Model T (福特公司第一款大規模生產的汽車) replaced horses. But as an individual, making short trips on an e-bike would save money, cut carbon footprints, and improve health and well-being.
24.What did the author originally think of letting go of his car
A.Healthy. B.Tough. C.Fun. D.Terrifying.
25.What does the underlined word “captivating” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Fascinating. B.Challenging. C.Secure. D.Troublesome.
26.What did the author like best about the ride
A.Enjoying the beauty along the road. B.Relaxing in the pedal-assist mode.
C.Hurrying home after a stressful day. D.Being surrounded by metal and glass.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.E-bike will replace cars eventually.
B.It is advisable to make long trips on e-bikes.
C.Cyclists should do more to protect themselves.
D.E-bikes are economical and environmental-friendly.

If your hearing begins to decline, your risk of falling may rise. Though it’s not exactly clear how hearing loss increases the risk, it’s known that falls are the top cause of death from injury among people 65 and older.
Now, new evidence shows that restoring hearing through the use of hearing aids may be protective, especially when people wear them consistently, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.
“We found, quite significantly, that individuals that wore hearing aids compared to those that didn’t, did show a significantly lower prevalence (發生率),” explains Laura Campos, the study’s lead author. “They reported fewer falls, and their scores on a fall’s risk questionnaire showed they were at lower risk.”
As part of the study, Campos and her team surveyed about 300 people with hearing loss about their use of hearing aids and asked about their previous falls. The researchers also accounted for factors that could affect fall risk, such as the use of medication that can cause dizziness.
Overall, people who wore hearing aids had about a 50% reduced odds of experiencing a fall, compared to non-users. And the reduction was even greater among those who wore hearing aids at least four hours per day. “The effect size is pretty significant,” Campos says. “These consistent hearing aid users had even lower odds of falling.”
However, one challenge is that many people who get hearing aids don’t use them every day or stop using them altogether. “A lot of people don’t like them,” says Catherine Jewett, 67, who started wearing a hearing aid on one ear about four years ago. “For some people, the sound amplification (放大) can be hard to adjust to, and others are self-conscious of how they will look with hearing aids,” Jewett adds she feels safer when she wears her hearing aid since she can hear the sounds of a car, for instance, when she’s crossing a street.
28.How did the researchers conduct the study
A.By making observations. B.By carrying out experiments.
C.By asking questions. D.By referring to previous studies.
29.What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about the study
A.Its purpose. B.Its process. C.Its finding. D.Its subjects.
30.What is Catherine Jewett’s attitude to hearing aids
A.Doubtful. B.Positive. C.Unconcerned. D.Unknown.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Selecting Proper Hearing Aids Does Matter
B.People With Hearing Loss Need Special Care
C.Restoring Hearing Is a Long and Complex Process
D.Wearing Hearing Aids May Cut the Risk of Deadly Fall
D
If you’ve scrolled through your Facebook feed recently, you may have noticed something surprising: lots and lots of short videos.
What makes this “Reels” feature strange is that it is hugely addictive, which I know quite well from my own personal experience. Last Friday, I took a break and hit on one short clip of someone making dinner and, well, the next time I looked up it was 20 minutes later and the blank document on my computer monitor was confirming to me that my work was still not done.
However, as silly as it seems, Reels-is actually super important, and is at the centre of a major battle between the world’s largest tech firms. The format (格式) was first pioneered by TikTok-the Chinese-owned video app that has taken the world by storm since it launched in 2016. Today, TikTok has around 23 million UK users every month-including basically every person you know under the age of 25. And that fact has made Facebook and its parent company, Meta, very nervous indeed. As TikTok has continued to boom, Facebook has actually fallen in popularity among “Gen Z”. The reason Tik Tok has proven such a powerful challenger to Facebook’s social media dominance is almost entirely down to these sorts of short-form videos.
The format is almost perfectly optimised to be as addictive as possible: Tik Tok’s app shows you a short-form video, and if you don’t like it, you can simply swipe it away and another one will start playing instantly. And because it is portrait, not landscape, videos look “right” when viewed on your phone. What’s also smart is that TikTok’s algorithm (算法) picks videos for you based on what you actually watch, and not what you say you want.
Facebook isn’t the only app trying to do what TikTok does so well. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta, has integrated Reels even more aggressively into its app. And even Google is nervous, launching its own TikTok-style video section of YouTube(which it owns)a couple of years ago. As things stand, though TikTok currently maintains a healthy lead in the category, both YouTube and Facebook have deep pockets-so expect to see even more Reels and Shorts popping up in your feed as this intense battle continues to rage. You won’t be able to take your eyes off them.
32.Why did the author mention his own experience in paragraph 2
A.To illustrate the feature of short videos.
B.To stress the importance of short videos.
C.To prove his preference to short videos.
D.To introduce the functions of short videos.
33.What do we know about TikTok according to the passage
A.It has shown the trend of the fall in popularity among “Gen Z”.
B.It is perceived as a potential threat to Facebook’s social media dominance.
C.Its number of registered UK users has reached 23 million since it launched in 2016.
D.It underestimates the essential role of short videos in competition with large tech firms.
34.What makes the short videos on TikTok App so popular
A.The beautiful visual effects.
B.The high video quality.
C.The random recommendation.
D.The quick switch between videos.
35.What is the message conveyed in the last paragraph
A.The short videos have a profound impact on our daily life.
B.TikTok seems to be losing its advantage over short videos in the short run.
C.YouTube and Facebook may encounter financial difficulties in developing Shorts.
D.A growing number of tech firms have engaged in fierce competition for the short video market.

Dad’s Old Guitar
Tom was a teenager who loved exploring the old and dusty corners of his house. One day, while digging through the attic, he found something that caught his eye. It was a guitar, which was old, with signs of wear. However, it seemed to tell a story.
Tom rushed downstairs with the guitar in hand. “Dad, look what I’ve found!” he exclaimed, showing the guitar to his father. Dad’s eyes widened, and a smile slowly spread across his face. “ Ah, my old guitar,” he said, taking it gently from Tom.
“You played the guitar ” Tom asked, surprised.
Dad chuckled, “Yes, a long time ago. I was in a band with some of my best friends when I was about your age.”
Tom’s eyes lit up with excitement. “You were in a band That’s so cool! Tell me more!” Dad settled into a chair, the old guitar resting on his lap. “We called ourselves ‘The Sunset Strummers’. We played at small events, parties, and even some local cafes. Those were some of the best days of my life. Music, friendship, and endless fun.”
Days went by, and Tom couldn’t stop thinking about his dad’s musical past. He spoke to his mother and learned more. Old photos were brought out, showing a young dad with long hair, rocking out with his band. Tom felt proud and interested. He wanted to do something special for his dad to let him relive those days, even if just for a moment. With the help of his mom and younger sister, Lucy, Tom came up with a plan. They would organize a surprise concert in their backyard and invite some of Dad’s old band members and friends. Text 1
W: Do you have any plans for this weekend I heard there's a great fishing spot nearby. Maybe we could go fishing.
M: That sounds interesting, but I've already made up my mind. I'm going to visit my grandparents in the countryside. I haven't seen them for a long time. I'm looking forward to having a chat with them and helping them with some farm work. Besides, I also brought some books to read during the journey.
Text 2
M: How was your experience at the new restaurant last night I heard their food is top - notch and not too expensive.
W: Well, the food was okay, but the service was really slow. We had to wait ages for our drinks and the waiters seemed disinterested. Also, when I got the bill, I found some items were overpriced. But overall, it was the poor service that really put me off. I don't think I'll go there again.
Text 3
W: You look a bit worried. What's wrong Is it about the English test next week
M: No, I'm okay with English. I'm really struggling with my math homework. There are so many difficult problems. I just can't figure them out. I thought I understood the concepts in class, but when it comes to doing the exercises, I'm lost.
W: Don't worry. I'm good at math. I can help you after school. We can also go through your English notes together if you want.
Text 4
W: Have you been feeling any better since you started taking the medicine Remember to take it with meals.
M: A little bit. But I still have a headache sometimes. And I feel a bit nauseous after taking the medicine.
W: Well, keep taking the medicine as directed. And make sure you get enough rest. If the symptoms persist, come back to see me. Maybe we need to adjust the dosage. Also, try to avoid spicy food for a while.
Text 5
M: Are you going out I thought we were going to the cinema tonight.
W: Oh, that's for tomorrow. Right now, I need to buy some groceries. We're running out of milk, bread and eggs. I'll be back in an hour or so. After that, I might go to the library to borrow a few books.
Text 6
M: Hi, Lisa. I heard you're organizing a school trip. Where are we going this time
W: Well, we're planning to go to the science museum. It has some really cool new exhibits about space exploration.
M: That sounds great! When are we going
W: We'll set off next Friday morning. The museum has arranged special guided tours for us.
M: How much will it cost
W: The entrance fee is \(15 per person, but we managed to get a group discount, so it's only \)12 for students.
M: Good deal. I can't wait to see those space exhibits.
Text 7
W: Hi, Tom. I'm having trouble with my car. It won't start this morning.
M: Oh, that's annoying. Have you checked the battery
W: I'm not sure how to do that. What should I look for
M: Well, first, open the hood. The battery is usually a rectangular box with two terminals. Check if the cables are loose or corroded.
W: Okay, I see the battery. The cables look a bit dirty.
M: That might be the problem. You can try cleaning them with a wire brush. If that doesn't work, you might need to jump - start the car.
W: How do I jump - start it
M: You need another car with a working battery and a set of jumper cables. Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of your dead battery and the positive terminal of the good battery. Then connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the good battery and a metal part of your car's engine block.
W: Thanks, Tom. I'll give it a try.
Text 8
M: Hi, Sarah. How's your new job going
W: It's going well, but I'm really busy. I have to attend a lot of meetings.
M: What kind of meetings
W: Mostly project - related meetings. We're working on a big advertising campaign for a new product. I have to present my ideas and listen to others' opinions.
M: Sounds challenging. Do you like it
W: Yes, I do. It's a great opportunity to learn and grow. But sometimes I feel a bit stressed.
M: How do you deal with the stress
W: I usually go for a run after work. It helps me relax. Also, I try to plan my tasks carefully so I don't feel overwhelmed.
M: That's a good way. I hope your advertising campaign is a big success.
Text 9
W: Good morning. Can I help you
M: Yes, I'm interested in renting an apartment. Do you have any available
W: Sure. What kind of apartment are you looking for
M: I need a one - bedroom apartment. Preferably in a quiet neighborhood.
W: We have a few options. This one is on the third floor. It has a balcony and a small kitchen. The rent is \(800 per month. M: That sounds good. What about utilities W: Water and trash collection are included, but you have to pay for electricity and gas separately. M: Okay. Is there a parking space W: Yes, there is a parking lot available for an additional \)50 per month.
M: I see. Can I take a look at the apartment
W: Of course. We can schedule a viewing for this afternoon if you're free.

根據Best Active: Urban Kayak Chicago Riverwalk中的“This tour is perfect for those who enjoy an active city view and local yummy dishes. Participants paddle kayaks along the Chicago River, stopping at historical points where guides share insights into the city’s architecture. (這次旅行非常適合那些喜歡欣賞活躍的城市景觀和當地美味佳肴的人。參與者沿著芝加哥河劃皮劃艇,在歷史景點停留,導游會分享對城市建筑的見解。適合初學者,它提供了一個獨特的視角)”可知,如果你對建筑感興趣,你會參加Urban Kayak Chicago Riverwalk這個活動。故選C。
22.細節理解題。根據最后一段的“Combining cycling with culinary delights, this tour covers 13 miles through Chicago’s neighborhoods, stopping for local specialties like pizza, beer, cupcakes, and hot dogs. (這次旅行將騎行與美食相結合,穿越芝加哥的各個街區,全程約13英里,途中會停下來品嘗當地特色美食,如披薩、啤酒、紙杯蛋糕和熱狗)”可知,參加Bobby’s Bike Hike Chicago旅行的人可以期待一次騎行之旅,途中可以品嘗當地的食物和飲料。故選D。
23.細節理解題。根據Best Active: Urban Kayak Chicago Riverwalk中的“This tour is perfect for those who enjoy an active city view and local yummy dishes. (這次旅行非常適合那些喜歡欣賞活躍的城市景觀和當地美味佳肴的人)”,Best Ghost: Chicago Gangsters and Ghosts Tour中的“During the tour, you’ll also have the chance to taste authentic local cuisine, offering a delightful culinary experience that complements the rich history and culture of Chicago.(在旅行期間,你還將有機會品嘗正宗的當地美食,提供一種令人愉快的美食體驗,與芝加哥豐富的歷史和文化相得益彰)”,Best for Families: Underground Donut Tour中的“This food tour is a sweet treat for the whole family. Visiting four top doughnut shops, the tour offers a delightful selection of treats while sharing the history of each shop and Chicago’s doughnut culture.(這次美食之旅對全家人來說都是一場甜蜜的享受。在游覽過程中會參觀四家頂級的甜甜圈店,不僅能品嘗到一系列令人愉快的美味甜點,還能了解到每家店鋪的歷史以及芝加哥的甜甜圈文化)”和最后一段的“Combining cycling with culinary delights, this tour covers 13 miles through Chicago’s neighborhoods, stopping for local specialties like pizza, beer, cupcakes, and hot dogs. (這次旅行將騎行與美食相結合,穿越芝加哥的各個街區,全程約13英里,途中會停下來品嘗當地特色美食,如披薩、啤酒、紙杯蛋糕和熱狗)”可知,這些旅行的共同點是它們都包括品嘗食物。故選A。
24.B 25.A 26.A 27.D
根據第一段中“However, I live in Colorado; e-bike would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer.(然而,我住在科羅拉多州;騎電動自行車意味著冬天挨凍,夏天大汗淋漓)”可知,科羅拉多州的氣候不適合騎電動自行車,會讓人受累。
根據劃線詞上文“Biking to work was more than not unpleasant(騎自行車上班是令人愉快的)”可知,作者覺得騎自行車上班是愉快的。 故選A。
根據倒數第二段“I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. This, I have to say, inspired me to appreciate the beauty in my life and was what delighted me most on the bike.(我感覺自己與周圍的自然環境更緊密地聯系在一起,而不是走在被金屬和玻璃包圍的同一條路線上。我不得不說,這激發了我去欣賞生活中的美麗,也是我在自行車上最開心的事情)”可知,作者最喜歡騎行的一點是欣賞沿途的美景。故選A。
根據最后一段中“In a country where uncontrolled stretching of suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm, it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that the Model T (福特公司第一款大規模生產的汽車) replaced horses.(在一個郊區和購物中心不受控制的延伸以及不受保護的自行車道成為常態的國家,期望電動自行車像T型車取代馬匹那樣取代汽車是不現實的)”可知,當前的城市交通情況很不利于電動自行車的發展。
根據第四段中“As part of the study, Campos and her team surveyed about 300 people with hearing loss about their use of hearing aids and asked about their previous falls. The researchers also accounted for factors that could affect fall risk, such as the use of medication that can cause dizziness.(作為研究的一部分,坎波斯和她的團隊調查了大約300名聽力損失患者使用助聽器的情況,并詢問了他們以前跌倒的情況。研究人員還考慮了可能影響跌倒風險的因素,比如使用可能導致頭暈的藥物。)”可知,調查人員通過調查詢問進行研究。故選C。
29.主旨大意題。根據第五段“Overall, people who wore hearing aids had about a 50% reduced odds of experiencing a fall, compared to non-users. And the reduction was even greater among those who wore hearing aids at least four hours per day. “The effect size is pretty significant,” Campos says. “These consistent hearing aid users had even lower odds of falling.”(總的來說,與不戴助聽器的人相比,戴助聽器的人摔倒的幾率降低了50%。而那些每天佩戴助聽器至少4小時的人,聽力下降的幅度更大?!@種效應非常顯著?!膊ㄋ拐f:‘這些長期使用助聽器的人摔倒的幾率更低?!?”可知,第五段通過列舉數據來介紹這項研究的發現。故選C。
30.推理判斷題。根據最后一段最后一句中的“Jewett adds she feels safer when she wears her hearing aid since she can hear the sounds of a car, for instance, when she’s crossing a street.(朱伊特補充說,戴上助聽器讓她覺得更安全,因為她可以聽到汽車的聲音,比如過馬路的時候。)”
根據第一段“If your hearing begins to decline, your risk of falling may rise. Though it’s not exactly clear how hearing loss increases the risk, it’s known that falls are the top cause of death from injury among people 65 and older.(如果你的聽力開始下降,你摔倒的風險可能會增加。雖然目前還不清楚聽力損失是如何增加風險的,但眾所周知,跌倒是65歲及以上人群受傷死亡的首要原因。)”和第二段“Now, new evidence shows that restoring hearing through the use of hearing aids may be protective, especially when people wear them consistently, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.(現在,根據發表在《美國老年醫學會雜志》上的一項研究,新的證據表明,通過使用助聽器來恢復聽力可能是有保護作用的,尤其是當人們一直戴著助聽器的時候。)”
32.A 33.B 34.D 35.D
由文章第二段“What makes this “Reels” feature strange is that it is hugely addictive, which I know quite well from my own personal experience. Last Friday, I took a break and hit on one short clip of someone making dinner and, well, the next time I looked up it was 20 minutes later and the blank document on my computer monitor was confirming to me that my work was still not done. 故選A。
由文章第三段中“Today, TikTok has around 23 million UK users every month-including basically every person you know under the age of 25. And that fact has made Facebook and its parent company, Meta, very nervous indeed. As TikTok has continued to boom, Facebook has actually fallen in popularity among “Gen Z”. The reason TikTok has proven such a powerful challenger to Facebook’s social media dominance is almost entirely down to these sorts of short-form videos.
由文章第四中段 “The format is almost perfectly optimised to be as addictive as possible: TikTok’s app shows you a short-form video, and if you don’t like it, you can simply swipe it away and another one will start playing instantly. (這種格式幾乎是完美的優化,盡可能讓人上癮:Tik Tok的應用程序會顯示一段短視頻,如果你不喜歡,你可以簡單地把它移開,另一個視頻就會立即開始播放。)”可知,TikTok用戶如果不喜歡當前視頻,只需滑動即可立即開始播放下一個視頻。這種快速切換機制讓用戶能持續不斷地瀏覽新內容,增強了其吸引力。故選D。
35.推理判斷題。由文章最后一段中“Facebook isn’t the only app trying to do what TikTok does so well. Instagram, which is owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta, has integrated Reels even more aggressively into its app. And even Google is nervous, launching its own TikTok-style video section of YouTube (which it owns) a couple of years ago. As things stand, though TikTok currently maintains a healthy lead in the category, both YouTube and Facebook have deep pockets-so expect to see even more Reels and Shorts popping up in your feed as this intense battle continues to rage. You won’t be able to take your eyes off them.
36.D 37.C 38.A 39.G 40.E

As for my favorite sport, I’d say it’s badminton.
When I watched Zheng Siwei playing badminton at the 2024 Olympic Games, I was deeply impressed by his excellent skills and I decided to be just like him. I fell in love with badminton as soon as I started playing it and formed the habit of playing it with my friends at weekends. As time goes by, I have greatly improved my skills. Now I am on my school’s badminton team, which makes me very proud.
Playing badminton not only builds up my body, but also helps me make a lot of new friends. It makes my life more enjoyable.
The day of the surprise concert arrived. Friends and family members gathered in the backyard, holding their breath in expectation. Tom led his dad outside, blindfolded. When the blindfold was removed, Dad’s face lit up. The old band members were there, instruments in hand. Tom handed the guitar to his dad. Without hesitation, Dad took the guitar, and the band started playing. The music was filled with homesickness and love. Tom joined in with a song he had learned, and together, father and son played in harmony. The crowd cheered, danced, and sang along.
As the evening grew dark and the music came to an end, Dad hugged Tom tightly. “Thank you,” he whispered, tears in his eyes. “This was the best gift ever.” Lucy captured the moments with her camera, ensuring the memories would last forever. The old guitar had not only revealed a piece of Dad’s past but also created a new and beautiful memory for everyone present. And in a simple backyard, with string lights and heartwarming tunes, the family and friends came together, celebrating love, memories and the timeless magic of music.
