The rich aroma of freshly roasted coffee filled the air inside a quaint stone cabin in the eastern Chinese village that houses Frank Sterzer’s café: Bamboo Coffee Roasters.
After more than 20 years as an engineer and executive with leading automobile companies in Germany and China, Frank has found a new calling and fulfillment in the village of Maoli near Ningbo in Zhejiang province. Inspired by his lifelong love of coffee, a passion for roasting beans prompted Frank to turn what had been a hobby into a thriving business. “Zhejiang’s countryside has excellent infrastructure and beautiful landscapes, and I find it the ideal place to start my business,” Frank says. Maoli is located less than a 30-minute drive from the Ningbo city center, striking a pleasing balance between urban convenience and rural tranquility.
For Frank, the experience of sipping a cup of coffee while enjoying a slice of handmade cake and gazing at the countryside, captures the type of serene lifestyle he hopes to share with visitors. “Bamboo Coffee Roasters is a place to share the charm of this mountain village with visitors from all over the world,” he explains.
The café is named after the abundance of bamboo around Maoli, while its logo was inspired by a photograph Frank took of a nearby bamboo forest. He has also created a small coffee factory behind the shop front, where excellent beans from around the world are neatly stacked next to gently humming roasting machines. Terns(燕鷗) chirping and wolves howling are among a pioneering composition that integrates sounds from nature with traditional instruments. Bird songs and animal calls will interact with orchestral music on an album by Stewart Copeland.
Wild Concerto, released on 18 April, is a “cooperation between nature and music”. A croaking frog, a black-footed albatross(信天翁), and a red deer will “perform” with Copeland, alongside 30 musicians from the Kingdom Orchestra. Copeland said none of the natural recordings had been manipulated or retuned. “All the bird and animal sounds are exactly as they were, but I put them in positions so that they add up to a melody and rhythm,” he said. “ Their voices bring an super authenticity to the music. They all have their own individual melodies but when you put an instrument in, everything is more amazing.”
Wild Concerto is inspired by the arctic tern’s migration from pole to pole, and creatures possibly encountered along the way. Copeland said there was a conservationist theme to the work. “Many of these species are endangered and their sounds could vanish in our lifetime. Through the Wild Concerto, their voices will be kept immortalized.”
For six decades, he has captured sounds of the natural world, from rain-forests to deserts—recordings heard in natural history series such as Our Oceans and Blue Planet as well as about 150 films. With a document of almost 100,000 recordings he has been called “the David Attenborough of sound”. Copeland is a brilliant talent. He’s combined natural sounds and music seamlessly. He hopes the album will raise awareness of creatures that are by noise pollution that their sounds cannot be captured cleanly: “Two-thirds of the species in my library are now basically extinct. For thousands of years, the Taklamakan Desert preserved more than the bodies of those buried in China’s Tarim Basin. Archaeologists found pebble-sized pieces of a yellowish substance: the world’s oldest cheese, scattering around the necks of some bodies in Xiaohe, a Bronze Age cemetery. A recent study, published in Cell, analyzes the DNA of this ancient dairy, shedding light on how it was made and how its production spread.
In a previous study, researchers took tiny samples of the 3,500-year-old cheese attached to the mummies’ necks. An analysis of proteins in those bits unveiled the presence of Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens, a microbe(發酵菌) used to produce a type of fermented cheese called kefir.
“That was really amazing”, says Qiaomei Fu, a scientist at Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. Having worked with ancient human DNA, she wanted to study the microbe’s DNA. However, extracting complete DNA from such ancient samples proved challenging, as it broke down over time and mixed with genetic information from the environment. In 2014, Fu began designing special molecules (分子) that could efficiently capture the microbe’s ancient DNA from the cheese. After years of work, Fu and her team managed to reconstruct 92 percent of the ancient microbe’s DNA.
From this microbe’s DNA, the team could explore the history of the cheese’s production. Kefir is made by mixing milk with an existing microbe, and as it spread, so did the microbes used to make it. By comparing the DNA from the Xiaohe cheese with that of others, two branches emerged: one from Europe and the Pacific Islands, and the other from Tibet and East Asia, which suggests a possible route for kefir’s spread from Xinjiang to East Asia, possibly through migration.
The DNA analysis also pointed to the interaction of ancient peoples. It uncovered that samples from cows and goats were found. Interestingly, the goat DNA resembled that of other ancient Central Asian goats, suggesting the mixing of population in Xinjiang with other Bronze Age populations. Researchers anticipate that further analysis of microbes in the cheese, along with other biological samples, could provide deeper insights into interactions between ancient populations.

He recalls a Nice food festival at the Dragon Hotel Hangzhou, where traditional food, such as salade nicoise — 59 (make) from tomatoes, hard-boiled eggs and olives and dressed with olive oil, and pan bagnat, 60 sandwich made from whole wheat bread enclosing the classic salade nicoise, was served.
The cultural exchange between the two cities reached a new 61 (high) in2017 when Hangzhou Opera and Dance Drama Theater 62 (stage) the show To Meet the Grand Canal in Nice, at the invitation of the Nice government. In 2014 the Grand Canal was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the news, the Nice government approached Hangzhou, keen to learn from its experience, as Nice was seeking a similar status. In 2021, UNESCO added the city of Nice to its World Heritage List. “Our candidacy for UNESCO 64 (support) by China, for 65 we are so grateful,” says Salles.

The sun was setting over Springdale, casting shadows across the busy community center. A group of teenagers, the members of the Springdale Youth Committee, gathered at a table. They looked determined and worried. Among them was Emily, a smart but often unnoticed girl who loves helping others.
For weeks, they had been organizing a fundraising event for the local homeless shelter, as the shelter struggled to assist the increasing number of individuals seeking help. The big day was one week away, and everything was set — until they discovered another group had a similar charity event on the same day. This could divide the people who might come and the donations they hoped to get.
“We can’t change the date now,” said Tom, a senior member, his voice filled with frustration. “We’ve already sent out invitations, and the place is booked.” Emily listened quietly to the discussion. She knew changing the date wasn’t possible, but she also realized competing with another worthy cause could hurt both sides.
After the meeting ended without a solution, Emily decided to take action. She spent the next day looking into ways to work with the other group, hoping to find a way that would help both the homeless shelter and the other cause.
The next day, she came to the committee with a suggestion. “What if we join our events ” she asked. “We could share resources, work together on promoting, and most importantly, make sure both causes are supported by the community.”
The members looked at each other, some doubtful, others interested. “That’s a great idea, Emily, but how will we get them to agree ” Laura, another member, asked. Emily had already thought this through. “I’ll talk to their organizer and show them the benefits of a joint event.” She knew the path ahead would be challenging, but she was determined to make it happen for Springdale and its people.
