Blake Mycoskie set up five businesses, but later he sold them all at a profit. Feeling a bit burned out from work, Mycoskie decided to give it a break for a while and headed down to Argentina for some rest. But rest isn't really part of a businessman's make-up. It's in their nature to keep having good business ideas.
On a visit to a village outside Buenos Aires, he was shocked to see that many children didn’t have any shoes or, if they did,the shoes were badly worn. Since shoes—particularly the local farmers, canvas(帆布的)shoes—can be bought cheaply in Argentina, Mycoskie’s first instinct(本能) was to set up a charity to donate shoes to the children. But after giving it some thought, he realized that this was not a model that would work. One pair of shoes per child would not make that much difference, because they wear out(磨損). And if he asked people to donate repeatedly —to provide new shoes for the same child every six months—the donors, sympathy(同情)for the cause might also wear out pretty quickly.
Instead he came up with the idea of ''TOMS: one-for-one shoes''. He would take the canvas shoe to America, manufacture it and sell it as a high end fashion item at around $ 50 a pair. For each pair he sold he would donate one pair to shoeless village children. That way he could guarantee a continual supply.
Several years on,the business is very successful, supplying shoes not only to children in Argentina but also other parts of the world. But is the one-for-one model one that can be repeated with other products Mycoskie is doubtful. TOMS is a for-profit business, but does not yet make a profit. He says one-for-one is not an offer that you can just add to your existing business model; you have to build it in from the beginning.
Some would also argue that the charity aspect is just a marketing tool, but in the end does that matter TOMS is making a real difference to poor children all over the world and Mycoskie is enjoying being a businessman more than ever
4. Why did Blake Mycoskie go to Argentina
A. To go for relaxation. B. To seek business cooperation.
C. To look for new business ideas. D. To learn to make canvas shoes.
5. Why didn’t Blake Mycoskie set up a charity
A. He wasn't interested in running a charity.
B. He had no real experience of running a charity.
C. A charity would make no difference to the children.
D. A charity could not donate shoes to the children continually.
6. Why did Blake Mycoskie set up TOMS
A. To help poor children. B. To support a charity.
C. To win national fame. D. To expand his business.
7. What do we know about TOMS
A. It has made a profit.
B. It only supplies shoes to children in Argentina.
C. It gives Mycoskie a sense of achievement.
D. It can be a model for other kinds of products

Many science fiction stories tell about explorers arriving in a new world. The explorers then use some kind of high-tech device to test for breathable air or signs of life. But here on Earth, science fiction is becoming reality through a new sampling technology called environmental DNA, or eDNA for short. Scientists can use it to identify rare species or estimate fish populations with just a little air or water.
Environmental DNA can be used in two ways. One is to identify the creatures that live in a certain place. The other is to confirm the presence or lack of a specific creature.
Caren Goldberg is one of the first biologists to take the technology from the testing stage to actually using it. She sees eDNA as a way to get answers more efficiently and with less destruction compared to traditional survey techniques. Until recently, scientists depended on snorkeling ( 潛水), netting or using an electric current to temporarily catch fish.
This newer way to identify what lives in the environment is becoming popular around the world. Animal experts in Vietnam are using the eDNA to find the last, wild Yangtze giant softshell turtles. One researcher on the Caribbean island of Trinidad is using the sampling technology to find endangered golden treefrogs. In Madagascar, it is being used to identify amphibian(兩棲動物)diseases.
Ms Goldberg has used eDNA testing to confirm the local extinction (滅絕) of a leopard frog in the American state of Idaho. She has also been asked to document the spread of the New Zealand mudsnail in the state of Washington. The creature has been found in lakes and other waterways across the state.
Scientists working with the technology say they do not expect robots to replace field biologists anytime soon. But the old-fashioned field work could soon be more targeted.
8. Compared to traditional survey techniques, eDNA is more______.
A. complex B. eco-friendly C. dangerous D. convincing
9. By using eDNA, Caren Goldberg has______.
A. succeeded in catching many fishes
B. found the existence of golden treefrogs
C. documented the spread of softshell turtles
D. confirmed the disappearance of the leopard frog in Idaho
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Robots will replace scientists soon.
B. Some scientists are against using eDNA.
C. The old-fashioned field work may disappear.
D. Many biologists are unwilling to do the field work.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Science Fiction Becomes Reality for Species Surveys
B. Biologists Explore Space with the Help of eDNA
C. Scientists Found Methods to Test for Signs of Life
D. New Technologies Are Presented in Science Fictions

Crosstalk, a traditional form of comic storytelling, is making a comeback in China’s tea houses and theaters.
Audiences can laugh the night away every Saturday at the Qianxiangyi Teahouse in Tianjin, entertained by the apprentices(徒弟) of Hou Baolin, Ma Sanli or Yin Shoushan—all leading crosstalk artists of years past—for only 20 yuan.
The success in Tianjin has also caused the rejuvenation(復(fù)活)of crosstalk in Beijing and other places.
Although the art form originated in Beijing in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) Tianjin became a place where rising stars formed their styles and new pieces were tried out. The city was well-known nationwide for the quality of its crosstalk performances.
Known in Chinese as xiangsheng (literally, “face and voice”), crosstalk was the chief form of comedy throughout most of the 20th century. In the old days in Tianjin and elsewhere, temple fairs and market were the main places for crosstalkers to perform, although they occasionally also appeared in teahouses or theaters.
Crosstalk pieces draw on every aspect of Chinese culture, from history and folk tales to social issues of the time. Although there’re hundreds of traditional pieces, they’re constantly rewritten to suit the times and the audience, while new works are written as well. It’s one of the features that have made crosstalk a public art form throughout its history.
“Crosstalk was in the doldrums(萎靡不振)with competition from other art forms, especially TV,” said Wang Xiaochun, headmaster of the Northern Storytelling Arts School of China (NSAS). “But it has regained its status with crosstalk fans, especially young people, growing aware of its rare qualities.”
“More and more students are coming to NSAS to study crosstalk, including some girl students,” said Wang. “We’re sure that crosstalk will have a strong market.”
12. What does crosstalk mean in Chinese
A. Storytelling. B. Face and voice. C. Folk tale. D. Dialogue.
13. What can we learn from the text
A. Crosstalk first arose in Tianjin.
B. Crosstalk was mainly performed at teahouses in the past.
C. Crosstalk was the most popular art form in the 20th century.
D. Crosstalk didn’t appear until the Qing Dynasty.
14. Crosstalk has been a public art form partly because_________.
A. it is a popular traditional art after all
B. the pieces contain some famous folk tales
C. the crosstalkers make it return to teahouses
D the pieces are made to suit the times and the audience
15. What is Wang Xiaochun’s attitude towards the future of crosstalk
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D. Cautious.

In a small town, an elderly woman named Agnes lives alone. Though in her late 60s, Agnes still tries hard to take care of herself and run a small farm. However, she is finding herself struggling to maintain all this.
One winter morning, as frost painted the windows with delicate designs, Agnes woke up to unsettling silence — The power was out, and so was the heating. “Another signal of struggling,” Agnes thought to herself. Feeling cold, she wrapped herself in a thick coat and decided to go to the local cafe for a cup of coffee and some warmth.
As she stepped out into the biting cold, Agnes felt the pain inside her bones. The streets were unusually quiet, with only a few brave souls braving the elements. She made her way to the cafe, her breath visible in the frosty air. Upon entering, she was greeted by the good smell of fresh coffee. She ordered her usual and found a seat by the window.
As she drank her coffee, Agnes noticed a young man shaking outside. He seemed to be debating whether to come in or not. The moment she saw his face, she recognized it was Charlie, who used to enjoy coffee in the cafe and pay for her coffee before they started a pleasant conversation. “There must be something wrong with him,” Agnes thought. She decided to buy Charlie a cup of coffee.
Holding a steaming cup of coffee, Agnes approached Charlie and offered him the cup. “Here, this might help warm you up,” Agnes said gently.
Charlie looked at Agnes with surprise and gratitude. “Thank you,” he stammered(結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地說), his hands wrapping around the cup as if it were a lifeline. “I…I lost my job and home. I was trying to... find a job...” Agnes patted him on the arm and said softly, “We all have struggles, but there’s always hope.”

第一節(jié) (滿分15分)
Dear Ben,
I’m sorry to hear about your situation with the homework. While AI tools can be helpful for learning, using them to complete assignments entirely might prevent you from developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Your teacher likely wants to see your own effort and understanding.
My advice is to first apologize sincerely, explaining that you now realize the importance of doing work independently. Next, try redoing the task yourself and ask your teacher for feedback. In the future, use AI as a study aid (e.g., explaining concepts) rather than a shortcut. Mistakes help us grow, so stay positive!
Best regards,
Li Hua
第二節(jié) (滿分25分)
With an idea in mind, Agnes invited Charlie into the cafe. They found a quiet corner and sat down. Agnes listened intently as Charlie shared his story. He had been laid off a month ago and had been struggling to make ends meet ever since. Agnes, seeing herself in his struggle, offered him a place to stay for a few days. “I have an extra room that no one uses,” she said with a warm smile. “You can stay there while you get back on your feet.” Charlie hesitated but finally accepted her offer, his eyes filled with relief and gratitude.
During his stay with Agnes, Charlie tried to pay back. He began by helping out around the farm. Each day, he would wake up early and assist Agnes with her chores, feeding the animals, repairing fences, and even chopping wood for the fireplace. Slowly but surely, the farm began to look better and Agnes felt less burdened. Charlie also lined up job interviews and finally landed a job at a local grocery store. The day he moved into his own place, he and Agnes shared a heartfelt goodbye. “You have no idea how much you’ve helped me,” Charlie said, tears in his eyes. Agnes, hugging him tightly, replied, “We both helped each other. Remember, there’s always hope.”
