People often say, “Dogs are men’s best friends.” But cat lovers may not agree. Cats are becoming more popular in China. So, how do they win people’s hearts
What do cats say ◇Meow, we’re easy to take care of. We don’t need as much attention (關(guān)注) as dogs. We like to play alone, so we are great if you’re busy. We are perfect for small homes because we don’t need a lot of space (空間). ◇Meow! We’re quiet. Dogs bark loudly, which can bother you and your neighbors. Cats often meow softly. We meow when we want food, when we’re saying hello, or when we’re exploring (探索). ◇Meow! We’re cheaper! Getting a cat costs less than getting a dog. We eat less. We don’t need many toys. Sometimes, we can play with a string ball for hours or take a nap in a box. We clean ourselves, so you don’t need to spend money cleaning us.
How many Pet cats: 69.8 million Pet dogs: 18.05 million How much A dog costs: 2,882 yuan/ year A cat costs: 1,883 yuan/ year
Words from pet ownersWang: I like cats more. They are friendly, quiet and cute. My cat, Yuanbao, is a lovely, silver British shorthair. She is shy. When I adopted (領(lǐng)養(yǎng)) her, she always hid in a corner. But now, we get along well. She loves rubbing (蹭) against my leg. Wei: Dogs are playful. My dog, Lucky, is an 11-month-old Teddy. She is active. Every time we go for a walk, she gets excited. As a social (社交) queen, Lucky likes to rush up to strangers and say hello.
Smarter than you thinkYour cat can recognize (識(shí)別) its name. Its ears twitch (抽動(dòng)) or it turns its head when you call. But most of the time, it just chooses to ignore (忽略) you. Who has the best hearing On a quiet night, the mice hidden in walls squeak (吱吱叫). Dogs miss the sounds, but not cats! Cats can hear these small and high-frequency (高頻) sounds. The owl (貓頭鷹) always sleeps during the day. There was a certain old owl who had become very hard to please as she grew older, especially if anything disturbed (妨礙) her sleep. One warm summer afternoon as she slept in an old tree, a grasshopper (蚱蜢) began a song. The song woke the old owl up and the old owl became very angry.
“Get away from here, sir,” she said to the grasshopper. “Have you no manners You should at least respect my age and leave me to sleep in quiet!”
But the grasshopper said that he had as much right to his place in the sun as the owl had to her place in the old oak (橡樹). Then he sang more loudly.
The old owl knew quite well that it would do no good to argue with the grasshopper. What was more, her eyes were not good enough by day to let her kill the grasshopper. So she stopped all hard words and spoke very kindly to him. “Well sir,” she said, “if I must stay awake, I am going to enjoy your singing. Now that I think of it, I have a wonderful wine (葡萄酒) here. I hear Apollo drinks before he sings to the gods. Please come up and taste this delicious drink with me. I know it will make you sing like Apollo himself.”
The stupid grasshopper believed in the owl’s words, so he jumped near the owl. As soon as he was near enough and the old owl could see him clearly, she caught him and ate him up.

①Teachers are often considered (認(rèn)為) to be engineers of the human soul. They are expected to spread knowledge, ideas and truth. There’s one person in China who is called the “teacher of teachers”. He is Tao Xingzhi, a Chinese educator.
②Born in Anhui province, China, in 1891, Tao studied abroad for educational philosophy (心理學(xué)). When Tao returned to China in 1917 and began his own career as an educator, he did not blindly follow western education methods or theories. In fact, he changed the saying of “Education is life itself” to “Life is education”. Similarly, instead of “school as society (社會(huì))”, he saw it as “society as school”.
③For Tao, education is an active experience in real-life instead of telling and being told. He supported “unity of teaching, learning, and reflective (反思的) acting”.
④Besides developing education methods, Tao also tried his best to improve mass education. After doing surveys in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai in 1921, Tao was surprised to learn that in China more than 70% of the people in the city didn’t know how to read or write.
⑤To solve the problem, Tao organized young workers and farmers to study while working. To deal with the shortage of teachers and money, in 1927, Tao set up Xiaozhuang Normal College in Nanjing to train teachers and educators, most of whom became teachers at schools in the countryside.
⑥In January 1934, he started the “Little Teacher” movement in which young students were encouraged to serve as teachers to others, even to those older than themselves. Under Tao’s guidance, over 18,000 “l(fā)ittle teachers” were invited in Shanghai within 10 months. It later included 28 provinces and cities as a key nationwide education movement. Even in the fight against the Japanese army, Tao never forgot his dream. He founded a middle school in Chongqing and offered free education to poor children.
⑦M(jìn)aybe Tao’s motto is the best explanation for his life. “Giving a whole heart, yet taking nothing in return, not even a leaf of grass.”

Clothes are important to us, but do you know how to choose suitable clothes in a right way Here are some ideas for you.
When you go shopping and want to buy some clothes, first you should know which kind of clothes you need. Then look at the labels that are inside the new clothes. They tell you how to take care of the clothes. The label on a shirt may tell you to wash it in warm water. A sweater label may tell you to wash it in cold water. The label on a coat may say “dry-cleaned only”. If you do as the instructions (說明) say on the label, you can keep your clothes well for a long time.
Many clothes today must be dry-cleaned only. Dry cleaning is a little expensive. When you buy new clothes, you should know if they need to be dry-cleaned. You can save money if you buy clothes that can be washed in a machine (機(jī)洗) or that are high-quality (高質(zhì)量的). High-quality clothes look good even after you wash them many times.

A perfumer needs a good nose
調(diào)香師的鼻子有多靈?
I’m a big fan of all kinds of scents (香氣). I love things like scented candles and soaps. I want to know about the people behind these scents— perfumers (調(diào)香師).
Zhang Ying, 15, Chongqing
I’ve been working as a perfumer for two years. I make scented things and I also teach perfume courses.
Weng Qian, 29, Hangzhou
Zhang: What does a perfumer do
Weng: Perfumers make things like perfume (香水), candles, shampoo, air fresheners (空氣清新劑) and more. You need to know about different ingredients (原料)—their colors, smell and cost. You also work in labs (實(shí)驗(yàn)室) to study or create scents.
Zhang: Does every perfumer have a good nose
Weng: Although some people are born with a good nose, our sense of smell (嗅覺) can be trained. It is the main thing we do at school—we smell hundreds of scents to train our noses. The end goal is to build our own “scent library”.
Apart from a good nose, a perfumer also needs to know what buyers like. You also need to think about the cost. This makes the job well-rounded (全面的), instead of just being an “artist”.
Zhang: Do you have any original creations (原創(chuàng)作品)
Weng: I recently made some perfumes about famous people from ancient China. I use different spices (香料) to show my understanding of them.
Take Xishi as an example. Gardenia (梔子花), her favorite flower, is the main part of the scent. I also used lemon to draw attention and finished with musk (麝香) to give the scent a touch of softness. In my mind, Xishi is bright, elegant (優(yōu)雅的) and smart, and the fresh, sweet and soft scents of this perfume show what I want people to feel.

My name is Amy, and I study at Greenfield Middle School. Among all the places here, the library is the most special to me. There is a quiet magic in this room that makes me love reading.
There are thousands of books in our library. There is a science section near the window and an art corner by the door. There are also comfortable blue chairs where students sit to read. Every Monday after class, I go there with my friend Leo. There is no noise here, only the sound of turning pages.
This place is important for many reasons. First, there are books about every subject—history, geography, and even space! Second, there is a kind librarian, Ms. Evans. She helps us find books and teaches us how to use computers. Third, there are no phones allowed, so everyone focuses on learning.
