Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter Brown’s middle-grade trilogy (三部曲). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild Robot have to be so sad ” He tearfully asked me.
The story is set on a remote island, where a robot named Roz learns to survive and communicate with the island’s creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered on his own; the first to impact him with the mix of tragedy and joy.
When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our book club discussion, he described how Brown’s pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final scenes, where Roz leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. His previous reading experiences had cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this book introduced him to the beauty of complex emotions. I tried to explain how sadness can enhance the meaning of happy moments, but failed to fully convince him.
Once our discussion ended, Henry requested to buy The Wild Robot Escapes and instantly fell in love with it. He read the first two books repeatedly, so you can imagine his excitement when we finally got a copy of The Wild Robot Protects.

At dusk and dawn, the sky dances with three phases of in-between light. When the sun has just set in the west, the sky changes from the vibrant blue of afternoon to a more relaxed tone, as if it’s settling down for the evening. Soon the east will darken even as the west goes through an abundance of reds, oranges and yellows. And then, at last, the black of night will reign once again. The first that occurs after sunset is called civil twilight, so named because when the sun is just below the horizon, the sky is still bright enough for people to conduct typical “daytime” outdoor activities. This is also when you’re likely to see the most colors in the sky toward the west. Those same molecules (微粒) that distribute sunlight don’t do so randomly; the angle of distributing depends on the color of the light. All the blue light from the sun is sent away in all directions, leaving only the redder colors to shine through, thus creating those breathtaking sunsets.
The next phase is nautical twilight, when the sun is between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon. The sky maybe a deep purple, and stars begin to appear. The ability to detect a nearby presence without seeing or touching it may sound fantastical— but it’s a real ability that some creatures have. A family of African fish known as Momyrids are weakly electric, and have special organs that can locate a nearby target, even when it’s hiding in the mud. Scientists have now developed an artificial sensor system modeled on the ability of these fish.
“We developed a new strategy for 3D motion positioning by electronic skin, bio-inspired by ‘electric fish’,” says Dr. Xinge Yu, an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. The team described their e-skin sensor in a paper published on November 14 in Nature.
The artificial sensor is multi-layered. One layer acts as a transmitter, which will generate an electric field once activated, and another layer acts as a receiver to detect both the direction and the distance to an object. A separate controller creates the driving signal to activate the transmitter. When an object comes within range, the electric field around the sensor is disturbed, which in turn can be detected by the receiver. This data is then processed by a micro controller unit, which computes the position of the target object and sends that information to a smartphone or other devices.
A special biogel(生物凝膠) is used in the sensor, which has the ability to transmit and receive electric signals from a pattern of micro channels on the surface. The end result is a sensor that is thin, soft and flexible, making it easy to adapt to irregular surfaces, such as the human body. In contrast to the traditional sensor system that needs a large number of sensors to achieve spatial positioning, the new system can locate an object precisely in 3D space using just a few sensors. This significantly reduces the power consumption of data collection, transmission, and processing.
