Our family sat around the dining table, trying hard to think of an idea. We wanted to make a scarecrow（稻草人） to enter it into the 2024 Scarecrow Festival.
The scarecrow festival had started during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, in an attempt to lift people’s spirits. It was a hit, and had become an annual event, getting bigger each year, with around 50 scarecrows being entered in 2023.
As well as the scarecrow display, dotted along a 14km section of road, there are market stalls, games, food and entertainment. And all the money made goes back into community projects. The scarecrows are judged on different categories, such as the funniest and the most traditional.
“Why don’t we make Crowgun this year ”Pearl, my elder son, suggested. The idea was a nod to Australian breakdancer（霹靂舞者）Rachael Louise Gunn, 37, who became famous after her performance in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“That’s a great idea,”I said. We bought a parachute sports suit from a second-hand store and filled it with hay. Shaping Crowgun into a break-dancing pose was challenging—metal wires hidden inside let us twist its arms and legs upside down. As we were carefully adjusting its break-dancing pose, the kids couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
On festival day, over 50 scarecrows lined the 14km road. Our Crowgun was there among them, standing next to figures like Marilyn Monroe, a huge spider. Pearl got a little scared when she saw the hairy legs of the spider, but she couldn’t help smiling at how energetic our Crowgun looked. Meta Platforms, the company behind Facebook, released its newest Llama 4 AI models at the weekend, following two delays, stepping up the fight with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Chinese competitor DeepSeek.
Llama 4 has two versions, Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick systems, which can process and integrate various types of data. They are now available for developers to try on Meta’s apps and the Meta.ai website.
The launch marks “the beginning of a new era for the Llama ecosystem”. These models are open-weight ones, which means they can handle different kinds of media, not just text. They can work with videos, images, and audio too. The company claimed the models are “best in class”, better than competitors like OpenAI’s GPT4.0 and Gemini 2.0 Flash.
The news agency explained one of the reasons for the delay was that Llama 4 was not meeting the company’s expectations on technical standards such as reasoning and math tasks.
