Many years ago, a family visited the public elementary school where I taught deaf students. They intented to enroll(報名) their deaf daughter as a first grader. They were upset that their child's kindergarten teacher Jane cautioned(告誡) them not to have high hopes for her in studies. A yearly event in the Florida Keys, Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival is open to divers(潛水者) who enjoy music performances and watery wildlife. Since 1985, there has been a July weekend set aside for jamming out underwater in the name of protection. It's an amazing combination of music and nature. The festival gives ordinary people an opportunity to experience the reef like never before. Those who attend it leave not only with fun memories but also with lasting appreciation for this precious environment and the desire to take action. This leads to improved management of the Florida Keys.
Among the continental United States, Florida is the only state cool enough to have its own coral reefs just off the coast stretching( 延 伸) out for an impressive 360 miles.However, with a great reef comes great responsibility. As reefs around the world continue to decrease, Florida is still able to provide food and shelter for a number of threatened and endangered species. The bystander effect(旁觀者效應) is a social psychological theory which takes place when the presence of others discourages an individual from taking steps in a troubling situation, such as a car accident, a crime or other wrongdoings. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will provide help for a person in need.People tend to act in an emergency when there are few or no other people present.
About six decades ago, researchers connected the bystander effect with two factors:the diffusion of responsibility and social influence. The former means the more bystanders there are, the less personal responsibility individuals will feel to take action. Social influence means that individuals observe the behavior of those around them to decide how to respond.
Under the bystander effect, those left without aid may feel disconnected, experience increased pain and decreased self-worth, as well as suffer stress-related aftereffects. Besides,trust issues may come up, making it hard to build relationships, causing these people to pull away socially for fear of being ignored.
One way to address the bystander effect is to behave as if one is the first or only person to see a problem. Often, when one person makes a move, even if just to shout“Hey, what's going on ”, others may be encouraged to help people in trouble as well. That is to say, an active bystander is most effective when they assume that they themselves are the only person taking charge.
It is also important for individuals to develop moral virtues. Try to see the situation from the viewpoint of the victims(受害者). Worry less about the consequences(后果) of giving a helping hand and think more about the example you are setting for future generations. If you are the affected person, pick out one person in the crowd and make eye contact. People’ s natural drive to be kind and helpful may make it hard for them to reject your request for help.

W: Good afternoon, everyone. Now I'd like to tell you something about my apartment. My apartment sits on Queen Street. It's just a ten-minute walk to the nearest subway station and a fifteen-minute walk to a cinema. There are many convenience stores around my place, and there's a bank almost in front of the building. My apartment is well furnished. It is quite large with two large bedrooms, a study and a small room. As I am writing novels full-time at home, I have a big bright study, which is full of books. My husband and my son are both sports lovers, so we store their sports equipment in the small room we have. The apartment building we live in is very clean. There are some rules we should follow. At first, bicycles can't be parked inside the building for safety reasons. Besides, parties are not allowed in the building. But pets are totally acceptable here. So my neighbors and I often walk our dogs after dinner.
