It was an early blow to my self-confidence. I was attending my first group meeting in the lab as a postdoc, and I was pleased that I could follow most of the discussion. Then, in front of everyone, the professor turned to me and asked about my previous accomplishments. I froze. As a PhD student, I had achieved lots to be proud of. But all of those were in my home country of Brazil. Now I was in Washington, DC and I didn’t know what the word “accomplishment” meant. So all I could say was “I don’t know”.
I had decided to do a postdoc abroad because I thought the training would help me secure a teaching position. I applied for and received a Brazilian government fellowship to spend 18 months working abroad and got a position in a lab. It all seemed so easy—until I actually started.
In a new country, I struggled. After the mortifying lab meeting incident, my confidence took another hit. The paper I intended to publish did not materialize. I used to be invited to give talks. Now, I was asked to speak more slowly because of my accent. My confidence was destroyed.
After months of self-doubt, I reminded myself that I had potential. I needed to do something to regain my confidence. I thought a change of environment might be what I needed. So I made the move.
In another new lab. I still felt insecure. However, I was determined to make the most of the time I had. There were more opportunities to interact with others, which forced me to talk more. It was awful at first, but with practice I began to feel more confident in my English. I proposed new projects. I began to receive positive feedback on my presentations.
My confidence is back. I feel a little like Wonder Woman. She was a strong soldier in her homeland. When she left, she experienced obstacles and failures only to become even stronger than before.

Parents,teachers and caregivers have long believed in the magic of storytelling to calm and comfort kids. Researchers working in pediatric(兒科) have now quantified the physiological and emotional benefits of a well-told tale.

I looked up and into the eyes of the bank teller, a silverhaired grandmother with a gentle beauty. Her keen eyes reflected concern as she leaned forward and softly said, “I don’t know what is happening inside of you, but please, believe me when I tell you that—everything will be okay.” And then she did something quite marvelous. My hands were resting on the counter. She took her hands and placed them gently on top of mine. The touch was quick but electric. And at that moment my world shifted.
In the moment of her touching my hands, my selfdoubt disappeared. I found understanding and acceptance. I knew that love was being channeled through the heart of this beautiful woman directly into my heart. I was filled with a deep awareness inside me—that I am loved. I was speechless. I smiled and gave her a little nod. It was my first smile of the day. But it would not be my last, as from that moment on my entire day was transformed.

W: Let’s see. For the first two weeks, you should do three or four workouts per week. You need to bike, swim and run once a week. And add another longer work out of one of the three sports that you feel you need more practice.
M: OK. So how about I bike on Monday, swim on Wednesday and run on Friday
W: Sounds good! Do you think you can do that for two weeks
M: Yeah, I think I can. Then what’s next
W: Then it’s the second period. You’ve got four more weeks to go. It’ll be time to increase to five or six long work outs a week.
M: Wow, that’s a lot of work to do. I’m afraid I can’t manage it.
W: But you’ll be fitter after the first period, so it’ll be easy for you to do that.
M: I really hope so. Maybe starting from Week 3, I’ll change the exercising time to make it more interesting.

M: Most of the people may have experienced some best moments in their life. Do you know the best thing that ever happened to me It was when I lost my last job. Yes, really! You may be surprised and find it difficult to understand, but it is really true. I never liked it stuck in an office all day with computers and a telephone. Now my hobby is my full-time job. I start work very early, er... in summer I usually leave home at about 5:30 in the morning, but in winter not until about 8:00. I have a small truck, and I carry all my tools in that. It’s autumn now so I’m cleaning up the gardens - I’m picking up leaves and pulling up old summer flowers. Oh, and I’m planting small trees too. At weekends, my wife and I often drive to the country and explore fun things. I’m interested in collecting old radios and she likes to collect old cookery books. I don’t earn much, but enough for my hobby. I’m a very happy man.
